From Jose Sepulveda.......NOBODY can put Ida Presti down for me. She was a phenomenal guitarist....powerful when she needed to be but with the sweetest and most expressive touch when she needed to apply it. You're right, caraphyllis, Ida was a genius!
Great performance and perfect technique. At first I thought she was this Alexander Lagoya in the description. I look it up and it says it's a he. What? No. I saw a woman! Apparently, she's Ida Presti. Now I get it...
She is is doing a lot of vibrato exclusivelly with her middle finger ,so she achieves her unique sound. This is a lesson to all ,sound above everything
Before 1956 she was playing an guitar made byJulian Gomez Ramirez. In 1956 she started to use an guitar made by the luthier Robert Bouchet. That guitar were louder and had more power. If this film is taken before 1956 i should think she is using the Julian Gomez Ramirez guitar..
Phenomenal technique and feel even though speeded up by the medium transfers and sound compressed by the technology of the day. Even so the musicality shines through and there's no doubting the passion in the intepretation.
Modern players can be a bit clinical when it comes to tone expression but here's a player who is int the zone. Thanks very much. Warwick
I love Preti's playing with Lagoya but this is not good; it's way too fast and has horribly overdone vibrato on the first melody line in the bass. Her tone is too harsh; and don't tell me it's the recording because her tone is very sweet in some places here.
It's hard to tell what is the correct version..there are definitely errors in the score...but I'd trust Segovia rendition more.
The poor quality of the recording shows that is is probably a copy of a copy ! The tape is actually sped up. The sound is very poor and probably damaged in certain areas and not as much in others. Lets look at this for what it is maybe? The rare document of one of the best of all time that left us too early.
Since when is there a CORRECT version?? And "way too fast" is just your opinion. At least, unlike most guitarists, she keeps a measure of tempo:) (Rubato like rubber band: if you take, you must give...)
But please stop the "authoritarian" approach to commentary!
So, according to you there's no such thing as taking a liece too fast, no such thing as too much rubato, and you are the only one entitled to an opinion.
Rubato is like a rubber band...more like your brain is like rubber. Simplistic ranting about something you know so little about.
You might try reading all my posts; I already said I was in error about the tempo because I realized later it is speeded up...so get over it.

How could "The Greatest Guitarist of The 20th Century" be so unknown? I've never heard of her. Did Segovia have her blacklisted?

Segovia is to men
Presti is to women
Just like
Torres on the guitar
and
Stradivari on the violin
They are both great representatives of humanity's achievement on the instrument that we know as the classical guitar.

I probably should have thought of that...my bad
A simple check against pitch shows you are right.
It was a real mystery why she would play it so weird...I've been a big fan of hers for decades.
I guess if someone had the right machine it can be fixed.
Thanks for the reality check.
