Wes green doesn't know what he is talking about. Obviously by hearing him talk he isn't a musician either. I dare you to go to Wes Montgomery and tell him Brent sucks because he also plays country. Wes will tell you thats not true. So stick it up your pipe hole, because most jazz snobs who talk like you aren't even a decent player.
brent is a great player but don't ever compare country players to jazz guys. the swing feel is completely different..they may play the same licks/notes/scales what ever, but grant green/wes montgomery/kenny burrell's sense of time and space is completely different from hank garland or chet atkins or....brent mason.
It's all music coming from the same roots anyway...and that's a mighty big tree...
@wesgreen11 Then you'll know most country players are Jazz players? dont ever say Brent, then say BUT after it, Brent is better than any guitarist i ever heard. Idiot.
Absolutely. Musically, it's all there: playing strong chord-tone informed lines over a fast-paced series of changes, which are more than 75% of the time based on the blues form. Most country players can play jazz because they have that awareness that every chord merits it's own line of thinking.
Furthermore, both surely owe something to the swing era, where popular music as it was in the 30s and 40s involved a similar harmonic approach!
Brent is the most versatile player in the business. Shredders can shred, but Brent can pick and hold his own with any of them. I hear a lot of George Benson and Chet Atkins influence in this piece. I love Rhoads, Van Halen, and some ot the shredders but in the big picture, Brent rules!
chromatype, check out scotty on a taste of honey, take the a train, and his video of rhythm vs. lead....that man is more than just a great guitar player..he arranges as he plays. He probably thinks in terms of a great jazz musician because he not only understands stepwise movement, but he cycles up or down in any interval, and has an amazing knowledge of chord enharmonics.
Johnny's great but we're talking apples and oranges or Ford and Chevys. Brent has some great jazz chops that I haven't seen from Johnny. Brent can play the crap out of any genre. Just dig 'em...both!
Brent's speed comes from his masterful use of thumbpick. Albert has said he just couldn't get on with a thumbpick. I think that;s the main difference in their styles. Albert's hybrid picking gives him huge control over his attack resulting in magical string popping stuff.
Albert Lee equal to Brent in speed? not even close. Albert doesn't pick every note, Brent does. I know of very few players that ever played the guitar that can match Brent's speed and Albert isn't one of them. Not taking away anything from Albert because speed isn't everything and sometimes its nothing at all.
For speed and technique, I'd rate them as equals. For country stuff, equals. The country be-bop stuff, which Albert does quite well, is -owned- by Mason.
dayum! you mean to tell me there's someone here bashing this dude?! Brent rules

@onecrazykid5 Easy to dare someone to go talk to Wes Montgomery isn't it??? that would be quite a trick.

HAHA yeah, but i'd like to hear Wes Montgomery sit in with Vince Gill lol... At least Brent can do both, exceptionally well I might add.
The world doesn't need any more jazz snobs. thanks.

I saw him in a Nashville bar with his A-team band and he played every style of music except country which I thought was ironic.

Brent's a Mercedes MacLaren - flawlessly engineered but a bit souless. Albert's a Ferrari - can be temperamental but full of passion and spirit

Very good analogy ,I agree, plus screw it its not a competition people.

Fast forward from Jimmy Bryant to Brent Mason. Albert Lee, James Burton?, they're fine, but Bryant and Mason are gods.
