if Hood had closed the range she would have stood a much better chance at survival. after prinz eugen scored a hit and Hood was straddled by Bismarck Holland got worried about the next incoming salvo and started to turn. if he had ordered the ship to continue forward things might have been different. this guy doesn't give Hood enough credit.
The sinking of HOOD is typical of the English attitude. The Poms have spent too many decades living off and sitting on their laurels. That is why today, England as a world power of industry and war is nothing but a foot-note in history.
You hailed? Patching you through. Let’s go this way really, really fast. If something gets in our way, shoot it! Let’s hurry up and finish this attack. It’s raid night. What’s with all these blinky lights?” Flying this low always makes me nervous. Do svidaniya, don’t get any on ya! I’ve lost my hat! Swing around, we’ll pick it up We’re going down! Stay with the ship, I’m out! Where’s my escape pod? Ah, it’s happy hour. Wonderful! What do you mean we’re out of olives?
I dont get this, 15 inch armour which is one of the best in this countdown but because it came up against the most modern and deadly ship in the word and lost due to being hit in the worst place possible it has terrible protection?
Armament 8 x 15inch guns, which is the same as the bismarc yet it gets that feeble score when the bismarc is nearly full?
@Jackneill45 ye but dont you find it odd that even though the Hood has armour and guns equal to the bismarck its rating thing at the end is absolutely pathetic compared to all other ships in this countdown. Also the fact that its 20 years older than the bismarck yet feilds equal guns and armour should grant it better firepower and protection ratings than the bismarck?
@crazygingee No, the Hood did not have the same armour protection as the Bismarck. 20 years of technological improvements combined with bad luck resulted in one lucky shot sinking her. Additionally in the same battle the Bismarck forced the Prince of Wales to retreate. In comparison it took two British Battleships, and their support ships over 2 and a half hours to sink the Bismarck.
@Jackneill45 but the hood was 20 years older so doesnt that mean it shouldnt be compaired to the bismarck in the first place? im not trying to be an asshole im just trying to point out that the hood was 20 years older yet fielded the same size guns and armour thickness but somehow has inferior ratings for both than the bismarck. Actually laughable is more like it
@crazygingee the Hood still served in WW2, along with many other WW1 battleships and battle Cruisers of the RN. That plus her fame, and the fact that she was first and formost a "Fighting ship" is why Hood is being compared to WW2 battleships. Also something that was not mentioned here is that Hood was overdue for a number of critical upgrades. One of which was re-inforced deck armour which could have altered Hoods fate.
Hood's armour was more than adequate...for when she was built, however advances in rangefinders, gunnery and fire control meant that Hood was well protected for closer range fire as was used during WW1, but suceptible to longer range plunging fire, as was used later when battleship engagement ranges increased. There will always be argument over what/who sank the Hood, Bismark or Eugen, penetrating hit or hit on ready ammo stores. When all is said and done, Hood and POW were badly handled.
Why is hood in a top ten list? It went the way of an older ship, the Invincible. Ironic name, 'cause that one (like Hood) went down in only a couple hits due to poor deck armor. Oh well, some lessons you gotta learn twice.
"The Hood sank" doesn't do the horror of the Hood's death justice. It's Cordite magazines were touched off, causing it to burn through the ship, and blowing the ship in two. The real surprise should be that anyone made it off the ship alive.
let's finish this attack really really fast... we are running low on synergy...If something get's in our way, shot it... flying this slow always make me nervres... I've lost my hand, swing around, pick it up... the yamato cannon is charged, so I am... we're going down! stay with the ship, I'm out. where's my escape pod... I'm making an anouncement, I am drunk... dastdania, don't get yourself tuania...
About the same time that Hood was built, Vickers built a new battle cruiser for Japan called the Kongo. She was very similar to Hood in layout but was a bit smaller and carried 14" guns. The rest of the Knogo class was built in Japan. The four ships of the Kongo class were used extensively during WWII - particularly as carrier escorts because of their speed.
What a load of bollocks. "Low protection rating" my arse. A lucky shell went through the deck and hit the ammunition stores. If you got a shell through the deck of any ship, modern or older that would be the end of the story.
I understand the criteria - by which Americans and their stooge are the "top ten in the world bla-bla-bla" estimate!

the fact is, the hoods replacement was the vanguard, yes, with smaller guns than the iowa and yamato, but with equailly as heavy armour, faster, most advanced radar and the best anti aircraft systemes ever put on a battleship and some of the most advanced damage control system, if war had broken out in 1945 like hitler had intended, Vanguard would have been waiting!

There is so much ill-conceived, misleading, and inaccurate comments in this series it's ridiculous...

Hood shouldn't even have been included... they should have put Richelieu instead...

the fact is, the hoods replacement was the vanguard, yes, with smaller guns than the iowa and yamato, but with equailly as heavy armour, faster, most advanced radar and the best anti aircraft systemes ever put on a battleship and some of the most advanced damage control system, if war had broken out in 1945 like hitler had intended, Vanguard would have been waiting!

Hood is the sexiest brit battleship right next to the Warspite.

I prefer those old style bridge superstructures, but the Vanguard was pretty damn sexy as well.

@scottduncan44: Grow up! But it says your age is 59 yrs old. If that's true, don't even bother trying!

it's strange that the Yammato or Mushi (sp) wern;t on this list and those were the most powerful battleships of all time.
