@theabnormal1 The method for 1x1 rib is the same, the only thing is you will essentially be going through a knit stitch picking it up the same way as in the video, then for your purl it is like going through a knit stitch from the back. Behind the purl bump should still be a a "v" or upside down U shaped stitch - this is what you will pick up so that the needle grabs the right leg of the stitch. Hope that helps!
which side do you start on? If you are holding your knitting horizontally with the yarn ball to your right and the tail to your left do you start on the first part of the first V on the left or on the right side?
@xdunlapx You want to grab the first part of the v, so the leg of the stitch on the right side. This ensures that your stitches will be sitting on your needle the correct way when you start knitting again. However, if you pick up the left leg of the stitch by accident - it will be sitting on your needle the wrong way, with the right leg behind the needle and the left leg in front. This is easily fixed by simply knitting into the back of the stitch when you come across.
@pywagner The basic idea is the same for garter stitch, however, putting the stitches onto your needle might be a bit harder. If you stretch your garter stitch fabric a bit, you will be able to see a row of the "v" stitches in between the ridges. That is where you will want to follow across the row to pick up your stitches so you can unravel back down to that point easily.
How would I do this on a 1x1 rib?

I just had to do this! I wished I'd seen this video first. How do you work this technique if you've got a garter stitch fabric? Thanks.
