True most of the "good guys" are white but im looking at the cast as a whole. It's definatley not white-washed. Personally I didn't like the movie but i'm still a big fan watch the cartoon before seeing the movie.
Try searching for Better Luck Tomorrow and DEBUT, they are independent Asian American films. The Behind-the-scenes mentioned the same issue,... it was hard for them to get investors because White producers expressed their admiration for the story, but required that the Asian cast be replaced with Anglos...

Race is not important. Why? Because race is nothing but how people adapted to a certain location. For example, Africa is a very hot, and not a very humid place. It also gets alot of sun exposure. So over thousands of years, your skin gets darker, your hair won't grow too much because you don't want hair on your neck because it's so hot, and because of the lack of humidity, your hair will become dry and brittle. So like I said, race is nothing but ow people adapted to certain locations.

My duaghter wants to see the film. She is Amerasian. She doesn't care about the race of the characters. She is seven years old. She also wants to be Katara for Halloween. I think this has gotten way to blown out of proportion. People have become way to senstive over these matters nowadays.

If you want to be mad at someone, I think you should start with Nick itself. This isn't an isolated case, Hollywood has been doing it for close to a century now. They've had white actors painted their face black, to play black roles. They taped their eyes to play Asian roles. The character's in the animated series, Avatar - The Last Airbender are all one of the four following races. Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation or Air Nomads. All are fictional ethnic groups that live within in the fictional world that was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Asian people do not exist in this world, neither do African's, Australian's nor American's. Therefore no one particular race qualifies as being a better choice to play the parts of any character.

Quite obviously you do not know how much Asians have been trying to break into Hollywood, not just in the acting field, but the musical field as well for a long time now. Currently people like SE7EN and Utada Hikaru, just to name a recent few have released (or are releasing) English albums here in the states. Please do some research before you assume how ALL ASIANS would respond when given a momentous opportunity, it's like saying Asians don't want fame and fortune, wth are you serious.

We live within the bounds of the capitalistic system, and "new" Hollywoods just don't spring up randomly with the chance of great success that's similar to the Hollywood that's already existing. yes, they are a mix between antagnoists and protagonists, due to the fact that in the avatar searies, it's based off of two story's, aang's (which is a no brainer) and zuko's stroy. and yes, suki does become a main character bye the third movie, seeing as how after the boiling rock, she is in every episode and is treated as a main character. But in this movie they ARE making the water tribe white, the fire tribe indian, earth nation korean, and i think the air nation chinese (not sure about air nation) also the only reason most of the movie has white characters because its mostly gonna be in the water tribe. Well I think that the series is very racially diverse and it just seems like they got everything all wrong. Sure, some of them may be asian, but the majority of them are white and the avatar is so culturally diverse its a bit insulting to make a drastic change like that. They don't have a single inuit water bender when Inuits influenced the looks and culture. When creating movies, a mistake or mix up like this is insulting, expecially when basing it off an already made series.
You just jumped from "white" to "dark." White is a color, the counterpart to that is "black." And following suit, the counterpart to "dark" is "light."
Do you understand the mistake you just made with your scope shift? Just because characters are LIGHT in skin color does NOT automatically make them WHITE (particularly when they come from a culture enriched with Asian mannerisms). Some Asians are pretty fair-skinned too, but are obviously not "white" as far as the connotation goes for the term.

Race is not important. Why? Because race is nothing but how people adapted to a certain location. For example, Africa is a very hot, and not a very humid place. It also gets alot of sun exposure. So over thousands of years, your skin gets darker, your hair won't grow too much because you don't want hair on your neck because it's so hot, and because of the lack of humidity, your hair will become dry and brittle. So like I said, race is nothing but ow people adapted to certain locations.

If you want to be mad at someone, I think you should start with Nick itself. But it's offensive becuase it didn't have the color of people you expected to see in it, or because the leads are played be white people? This isn't an isolated case, Hollywood has been doing it for close to a century now. They've had white actors painted their face black, to play black roles. They taped their eyes to play Asian roles. I think you should take your child to see the movie though, she's a kid and should be able to enjoy it.

The character's in the animated series, Avatar - The Last Airbender are all one of the four following races. Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation or Air Nomads. All are fictional ethnic groups that live within in the fictional world that was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Asian people do not exist in this world, neither do African's, Australian's nor American's. Therefore no one particular race qualifies as being a better choice to play the parts of any character.

Don't get me wrong. Going in it for fame and fortune isn't a bad thing - it's similar to why any one in any race would reasonably want to get known in acting. The problem is opportunity and chances. When you give even clearly Asian roles away, it's really stifling out any chances of Asians rising -- which has it's own political/economical ramifications. Basically, it's not giving them jobs in jobs that they can do.

NEWS FLASH: The "Avatar Franchise" is complete bull. If you're a real Avatar fan, you'd see beyond all this b.s. and note that it's just Hollywood milking the shit out of Avatar -- the REAL intentions of the Avatar creators obviously based their work on the Asian culture.

No. White is european decent if you want to get technical. White is an option under the race catagory of job aplication as well as many other aplications. White is another word for caucasion and european which include France, Germany, Italy, etc. White does exist and I hate it when people say it doesn't. White is the main race of America. White is the casting of this movie. White is a nationality just as much as black is. It has nothing to do with absence of color.

what are you talking about, only 4 main characters were white, the rest are of differant nationalitys. The majorety of the fire nation is of hindu decent, the earth kingdom is a mix of asian and african, and the water tribe is a mix of white and latino as it seems. Aang is the only airbender, so I don't know what they will make of the other airbenders when they bring them in.

Actually 3 of them are white. The 3 good guys. IDK about touf. The rest, the badguys, are darker. Im just saying it would be nice if they actually had the actors look like there cartoon counterparts. Saying 'Nicole with a tan could pull of katara is not true because katara's complection is far past a tan.

well, gran gran is also going to be white, that's why I said 4, but ya, as it seem's, each nation is going to be played bye one of 4-5 differant nationalitys. I do agree that it would be nice, but im going to see how well these actors do... because in my opinion, it would have been racist if over half the cast was white, but with only 4 people so far being white, im not quite as worried. And I just saw a recent picture of the guy playing sokka, he has the same hair style, so that's a plus.

that's a good point, but still, im going to see how well they do the film, if the actor's do really well, than I won't be angry, because that's all anyone really want's in the end is a movie with action and a great stroy, which is what the avatar verse was all about, and hey, Toph should be of asian decent do to the whole earth kingdom being asian, but if she's white, than Ill agree about them being racist, but we have to wait till the second movie to find out.

what about zuko, suki, yue, haru, iroh? they are all main characters bye season 3 (except for yuei) and than we have toph who we don't know what she look's like. But oh well, it's showing the 4 nation's as that, 4 different nations of 4 different races. Ok, so aang, katara, and saka are all white, but ive seen the guy playing saka, and he seem's to be a pretty decent saka.

Zuko and Iroh are antagonists in this movie. I hope there isn't another one.
Peter Jackson is a better director and he proved that with Lord of the Rings. He might be able to do a reboot to the original.

yes, they are a mix between antagnoists and protagonists, due to the fact that in the avatar searies, it's based off of two story's, aang's (which is a no brainer) and zuko's stroy. and yes, suki does become a main character bye the third movie, seeing as how after the boiling rock, she is in every episode and is treated as a main character. But ya, zuko is a main character, and is a protagonist in way's (or at least that's what the creaters of the searies said)

im sorry for my overzealous comment. But in this movie they ARE making the water tribe white, the fire tribe indian, earth nation korean, and i think the air nation chinese (not sure about air nation) also the only reason most of the movie has white characters because its mostly gonna be in the water tribe. I would also like to apologize from earlier. I just don't like how people make race such a big issue, Im asian and i don't see the big deal about the movie.

Well I think that the series is very racially diverse and it just seems like they got everything all wrong. Sure, some of them may be asian, but the majority of them are white and the avatar is so culturally diverse its a bit insulting to make a drastic change like that. They don't have a single inuit water bender when Inuits influenced the looks and culture. When creating movies, a mistake or mix up like this is insulting, expecially when basing it off an already made series.

You just jumped from "white" to "dark." White is a color, the counterpart to that is "black." And following suit, the counterpart to "dark" is "light."
Do you understand the mistake you just made with your scope shift? Just because characters are LIGHT in skin color does NOT automatically make them WHITE (particularly when they come from a culture enriched with Asian mannerisms). Some Asians are pretty fair-skinned too, but are obviously not "white" as far as the connotation goes for the term.

Wow, ok, first off when I said dark I meant there skin tone, indian is considered dark which would help the rumor of "Hollywood racist against dark people." You pulling this "counterpart to dark" isn't making you sound smart, in fact its making you sound quite the oposite. I never said anything about light people. the cast is white, its a fact. I know the casting races, theres no assuming.
