Remember the consumer advocate David Horowitz of "Fight Back" fame? My all-time favorite moment was from c.1986 when he tested on how severe the damage would be going in the wrong direction.
That would be better, I guess, but even disabling a vehicle after it crosses the tracks could hold up traffic and create a danger for others trying to cross. Judging by your spelling of "tyres" (tires), I assume you're living in the UK, and you're not accustomed to having as many lawyers as we do.
@logik316 People that bust the red lamps do it because they're in a hurry. What's better: getting hit by a train or losing even more time, having to pay a tow truck, a brand new set of tyres and be even more late, I guess spikes will leave drivers no option but to STOP!!!!. BTW, I'm from Canada, I just like spelling "tyre".
I curious how it's all set up, though. What's to stop a violator from simply driving around the spikes? Are the tracks on both sides walled off around the crossing to force the vehicle to go in a straight line?
@logik316 No need to wall it off The spike strip is set across the entire road surface so you would have to leave it and probably crash into the signal or jump the unprotected tracks, causing important damage to your vehicle.

We need that at railway crossings. When a train is coming and you bust the crossing. Pop goes your tyres.

@Hampstead343 Good idea!

@Hampstead343
Sure, so the car will get stuck on the tracks even easier.
logik316 1 year ago
@logik316 The spikes are placed AFTER the tracks not before. So tyres will pop once the car has cleared the crossing

Put pieces of wood over the spikes, and you can drive right over without a problem.
