I found it really easy! I used a program called AnySim which you load onto your iPhone, run it and it unlocks. If you Google "iPhone unlock Australia" you'll find all you need.

I wasn't very savvy with tech stuff when I started but it's pretty easy.

Vodafone should work fine. I have been importing and selling them myself, an 8gb can go for $700-1000 currently.

There is a software unlock, yes. But a lot of the ones you'll find on eBay are already unlocked.

As I recall, the Optus APN is just "internet" with no username and password. EDGE settings are in General, under "Network" (but it will only operate in slower GPRS, as Optus hasn't got EDGE support.)

yeah the wifi is great.. I'm just wondering though if you can use google maps and that over the optus network? like in the US you can do it on the move... can you do that on optus? if so how much does that cost?

You can, but they charge like 2 cents a kilobyte which is ridiculous money if you're gonna do anything beyond sign onto AIM a few times with a local client. Better to go with Virgin Mobile, who can do 50mb\month for $5 or 300mb for $10.

GPRS makes it awfully slow, too. Maps is usable, but you gotta wait some time for things to load etc.

No. 3 is a 3G network (better technology but higher battery usage) - the iPhone is 2.5G/EDGE (a bit slower but the battery will last longer) and so the sim cards are incompatible.
