I'm "apple noob" and have 1 question. My Internet provider doesn't give router, it's some kind of modem, and i have 100 problems to get connected... nevertheless, can i be connected on my mac and just use TC for backup or I also need to create some wireless network so i can connect with my iPhone, too? Can u explain me why do u must create new wireless network?
@jungmaeng I could… but having 3 Mac’s having them all backup to the one drive, with the wireless backup for the MBP is easier… and its still a great Airport Extreme which I wanted anyway.
hey - great video mate. i have an issue with my time capsule. i followed your instruction however the capsule amber light remains solid (ie doesn't begin flashing). when i run the airport utility it says it is unable to find any airport wireless devices. do you know where im going wrong?
@marben4262 sorry its taken me a while to get back to you. I don’t know if you’ve managed to get it sorted, but if its still happening i’d say the best thing to do would be to reset it by using a peperclip to push in the reset button on the back for about 5-10 seconds and see if that helps.
@thehubbucks hey there, yep its still working very nicely, never had to restart it. Only thing i could do with would be more storage, but getting a 2TB one you shouldn’t have that problem.
It complements the iMac nicely, helps you keep a wireless setup for everything.
Hi Hector4464, what is the benefits with Time Capsule if you still need the modem? The nice design seems pointless to me if you are to have your modem box beside. Do you think that a combined modem/router together with a external harddrive firewire800 is a better and cheaper solution. Thanks
will the time capsule work wireless to my router and then usb to me imac??? and can i plug in my printer and xbox 360 to the time capsule to make them wireless??? thanks
the time capsule can connect to an existing router via wifi in bridge mode and you could connect your imac via ethernet, and you can plug in your printer to the usb port and your 360 to the ethernet port :)
Is there a way to use the time machine as a stand alone router and so getting rid of a DSL wireless router? Also, is the differences in speed enough to warrant the price ?
it depends on how your system is setup to connect to the internet you will need a DSL or cable modem. your ISP will either send you the modem and router separately or like in my case as an all in one device, but i just turned off the router half of that box and used it as a modem. For me the difference in speed is amazing, but it obviously depends what type of computer youre connecting with, for me well worth it!
As far as i can remember you cant. connecting an external hard drive to the USB port will mount it on the mac as an airport disk so you can save stuff to it, but not use time machine.
Haha, yeah i was still midway moving back in after being at uni so hadn't unpacked properly yet. Now i'm not there atm, but the room i'm in is tidy. You can check it out at my channel, the video's called 'Tour of a geeks room' :P
that is one thing i can't get it to do. I think its intended to be the main base to your network and you have other routers extend the network from it. It has to receive its internet connection over the WAN port and ethernet.
I'd like to thank you for this video. It was a very thoughtful review and explanation and just went a long way toward helping me decide I will, indeed, get a time capsule.
You were very reassuring and covered the variety of situations I was a little concerned with operating in (eg. moving off my existing, old router, wireless printer, etc.).
So, good for you and your video - you helped me out and I appreciate it! Best to you.
yep, as well as backing up your Mac with time machine.
You can buy it direct from apple or any other retail store that stocks them, all you need to have is a DSL modem with an ethernet port which you should already have :)

well i think i need to sort some things out cause i'm confused..
could i use the time capsule solely as router connected to my wireless modem router or could i use it as MODEM-router too?
i'm asking this cause i'd love to get rid of my speedtouch :/
myselfmiky 1 year ago
@myselfmiky Sadly the time capsule doesn't have a built in modem so you'll still have to connect it to an existing one to connect to the Internet :/

if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?
person9269 2 years ago
Erm, it was roughly £400, but theyve dropped the price a fair bit since then, and theres the 2TB model too, so much better value for money now :)
