wow... just pure pleasure.. great technique, but so musical and clear. no wasted or extra notes.. just absolutely loved it.. thanks so much for sharing. you have a great gift
dude! this is fantastic! Yes definitely the best arrangement on here love the chords you use on how you play. love this song! duke ellington looks hilarious when hes playin it too. Like he just did a bunch of lines of coke and it put him on a wild one.
Now I'm generally a blues and metal man, but I took an interested in gypsy jazz recently. Before playing this video I was on a jam track of the same name. I was playing the same lick or similar licks to the one this guy is playing.
My point being: Music is most definatly a universal language. :)
You're a master! I just can't imagine, what happens in your head when you're playing. I've bought the book, that you're recommending on your site, but it's not getting me any closer to your virtuosity. ;)
Though I love the guitar, there are very few players that can hold me spell bound for longer than half a minute - they just get too self-indulgent with too many notes. Not so here - everything enhances the song. Magnificent performance!
I absolutely adore this arrangement, but please, tell me - the lick in the main theme - do you play it with hammer-ons/pull-offs or with finger picking?
Oh, and is there any chance you would do a lesson showing the finger picking technique? I mean when you play non-chord solo, just the fast notes, running over the scales? I simply can't figure out how to play it sounding at least half as good as you. Thanks
If it's the lick I'm thinking of, I play it with a slide and 2 pull-offs. I haven't done any videos for a long time, so I probably won't be doing a lesson thing anytime soon. But thanks for asking!
I think this is a very good solo arrangement, with guitar parts that segway through representations of key components of a big band, such as the horn punches, piano-esque comping, slippery but solid bass, and some great call and response. Not it's not classically astounding, but Segovia, as much as i love his playing, has yet to blow my lid off with an Ellington tune. This guy is representing an entire big band with his guitar. Try listening bigger.
I accidentally removed tangomaniaco's post. I didn't mean to and I can't seem to get it back. I enjoy all types of criticism, so keep the good and bad coming :-) Thanks!
hey man, you have really thin fingers like me. can you play chords that require you to push down two low notes with one finger? like a c-7 on 6th, 4th, 5th, and 5th frets (from first string up) i wish i could play that with 3 fingers instead of four, but i think my fingers are too skinny. do you have a problem with these kinds of fingerings?
The guitar is a Samick Artist Series Edition and the amp is a Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket. I don't think they make either of them anymore. Probably for good reason :-)
try just using triads but substite a 6th on the c chord. and a dm9 triad for the dminor. there is also a part where it goes to f and i like to walk up to an inverted f from the f bar chord(thats the only chord i dont play as a triad) idk just suggestions.
i was searching for a big band version of take the A train but i couldnt find any ones i liked, then i came upon this and now ive watched it 3 times! very good im a sax player but i started playing guitar 2 years ago too

If I wanted to do background chords for the song would: C7, D7b5, D-7, G7, C maj 7 work?
JoelSwiss92 2 years ago
Those will work. I am usually thinking Cmaj7 for the first chord, but C7 would be fine. You could also play a C6/add 9 type chord there, too.
