Apple seeds do contain cyanide compounds (not arsenic, that's a wives tale). However, you'd have to eat crushed seeds (uncrushed are benign as they pass through whole) from dozens of apples to overwhelm your body's ability to metabolize it -- very hard to do without intent.

how do you tell it's ready to come out of the oven? is it supposed to be dry?

It bakes like any cake; you want the top to have a dry (but not burnt) appearance, when you gently press the center it should be springy not squishy, and if you stick a toothpick into the center and pull it out it should come out clean. :)

If you are baking this and looking for a more specific cook time, tell me what kind of pan you are baking in and whether you halve the recipe and I can give you a better idea. Glass pans take longer, more batter takes longer. :)

I have been developing my own recipes for dog treats for about a month now. Having two labs is expensive, and I'm finding it's cheaper and more exciting to bake them treats. So far I've made them peanut butter, peanut butter and carob, and banana and carrot biscuits. This is my first cake recipe; I developed it especially for Valentines Day! It doesn't taste good to me, though.
