wanna know what I'm thinking?....your reading script. Looking left to right, your hand movements and delivery speed give it away. You either need a drink, or a long night of sleep nobody normal talks like a revving engine. Up and down up and down. I have to concentrate just to keep up with you. Take an ambien, big pharma loves you.
How is this girl qualified to say anything about this? I don't even think she's one of the "famous YouTubers". Nobody wants you to advertise anything.
I create freeware applications. Hosted on a site without ads. Guess what I think about the whole sellout thing^^
Maybe it depends on how you see your hobby. I earn my money with a real job - therefore I honestly don't want the whole money making thing in my private live. And yeah I generally hate ads xD
YES YES YES KRISTINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for getting it and being part of the discussion! I agree and it is awesome that advertisers want to work with us!!!
I have only gotten positive feedback (any backlash is very little)
Excited for your work with Ford and other things down the road for you!
I think that YouTubers should accept payment for something that they already believe in and do. From experience with videos, it's a lot difficulter than it looks to make one. The average watcher probably doesn't know how much time YouTubers commit to vlogging. They deserve to be paid for their work. It isn't selling out if it's what you believe in and already support, it is if you randomly show a clip of McDonalds even though you hate their food, but they are paying you.
It is odd coming across a video like this, when the discussion is so old, and the decisions were so done. But, I don't think that it is "selling out" if you are getting something of value. So, long as the products are something that you actually like.
It is a slippery slope though, so I think it is good to keep the discussion alive. It is easy to loose sight of the things that give us joy. There must be constant vigilance!
It doesn't count as selling out if YOU GET SOMETHING AWESOME...maybe it does, but its still awesome. Most people won't mind if you get free stuff, we just like watching what you do with it :D.
Who cares if the Video wasn't made in a professional studio? She's out there with a message and it's clear without the pretty red ribbon of perfect clips spliced with infinite detailed precision.
Just listen - what is there to watch? You see her once - now, close your eyes and just listen. Open them at the end and she hasn't changed a bit. You'll hear more that way.
Interesting insight, and good overall video quality, but I'm afraid there weren't enough cut transitions in the video. Itt flowed together almost too smoothly actually. You're already chopping clips mid-sentence, which is a good step, but perhaps multi-syllabic words shouldn't be spared either. I mean, why film yourself saying 'compromising' when halfway through the word your thinking may change about what you're saying. Chop it up into 4 clips so the inflection sounds just right. Good luck
I care so little about what asshats like that say so I'll take whatever they want to give me for free. That said...take what you want if it is offered to you and doesn't compromise your beliefs!
Guess you're not dating anymore huh ? These things happen. Limey boy has good ideas ? Like dumping you out of the blue and leaving you in a foreign country with nowhere to stay ? Yeah... the guy is just chock full o good ideas.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
While this video was playing, there was an ad to the right for The Gates Of Andaron. I know it's just animation, but that girl is prettier than you and has much bigger boobs so I wasn't paying attention to you or anything you said. Just being honest.
Wow you are very, very gross. Your face reminds me of this one time when I puked on this fags lap whilst he was taking a shit. Please do something about your gross face. Thanks fucker!
You are so right!!! The traditional models of media (& selling) are changing dramatically. Growing numbers of people dislike being advertised to (that comment of yours really struck me). I hear you. Old school advertising & selling aren't evil, they've just run their course. Even engaging Youtube as part of a marketing mix will evolve. What a great world we live in !!!!!!
I dont care about any product promotion, placements or anything, i enjoy your videos, and am grateful to you and any other youtuber for making them! Why does everyone have a problem with a youtuber gaining from their hard work. It takes time and effort to make videos. They deserve to gain, and i am used to advert breaks, and nothing can be free forever... it is logical that at some point, youtubers may need to form beneficial partnerships to fund their videos! =D DFTBA xxx
I think that that is the best way to attract consumers, by appealing to the common person and giving his the opportunity to say something good about their product because he WANTS to and because he thinks it is good, not just because he is getting paid.
I think it's fine... I didn't even think it's a big deal to accept advertisement opportunities. It's way more fun to watch you and crazy Nerimon go do some ridiculous waterfall chasing than watching a lame commercial that I'll probably just fast forward through anyways. I think it's smart on both parts! Company and youtubers.
I think its okay if the motivation behind the creativity stays the same. The second people start doing stuff strictly for the money it bugs... but hell, if someone was paying me to ride around in a car and go on adventures and talk about it I would do it too.
I don't get why youtubers making money is such a serious topic. If we don't like a video we just stop watching their videos or we'll unsubscribe if we don't like being advertised to. I saw one guy's history and his whole deal was to go around and bash every video he could find. I would have thought that by the 6 thumbs down that she might have realized that the average person on here doesn't care if a youtubers get paid to have fun. I wish I could have that same opportunity.
I second that :) I realized by how Ford is doing this movement and not, as you said "shoving Comercials down our throats" is a whole new approach of advertising. That I think is really cool! and now, when I get my first car I will want to get the Ford Fiesta :)
I think you have an awesome opportunity to make corporations listen to your generation. Now that you have their ear - you stand at the cusp of making some changes. Convnice Ford that their new cars should move beyond the status quo .. electric? fuel cell? You are the drivers of the future! Push for change!
COmpanies trying to break into viral marketing is them getting desperate for market share. No, really, we don't want to be pandered to, and we don't want our way of being in touch with the world (via YouTube) to be infiltrated by them. Don't kid yourself-they just want to use you, and when they are done and you're no longer as big as the Next Big Thing, they will fuck off to wherever the next big sucker is.
Also, Fiestas were never historically very good, I doubt they have suddenly become 'real'
I think that as long as the youtuber has ultimate control over the content that its ok. Inserting random commericals is bad and if the entire point of making the video was product placement that is also bad. As long as there is some other purpose weather that is humor or meaning or something else to go on that matches with the product... then it is good.
It's nice that you've recognized that you've started down a slippery slope. Andy Rooney is 8000 years old, and has turned down 8 million product endorsement requests. That's integrity. Don't sell out your reputation for so little money.
This is completely unrelated to anything you've said in your video at all. I just wanted to say that my respect for you went up like 3000% when I saw you had seasons of LOST on your shelf. That is awesome. I am impressed.
subscribed for awesome and for attractive (I ADMIT IT! :D)
I think if I were approached by a company who wanted me to bring the Tube in to see a product, I would be like "hey theyre giving me money to show you something awesome." and then proceed to highlight all the awesome. I would also show all the fail, because it's important, you know? Like why would people want a motorcycle if it only went to 10mph etc?
But yeah totally put it on the table. looks like youre sticking it to the man XD
So long as it is cute, funny or otherwise charmingly presented to the audience it will be largely accepted, it doesn't matter if its a blatant ad or a well stated opinion or just some pretty girl talking about her life. I think most viewers are after something enjoyable to watch. Marilyn Monroe said " if you can make a girl laugh you can make her do anything" i say if a company can make someone laugh they can make them buy anything
Wow, at the exact moment she said "you are currently in a plane", a plane flew past my window. Too bad it's three days after she made this video, and I don't live in between Seattle and London. Or I'd have gone "lol Alex's plane!"
I think friends offer feedback to each other about products, and a lot of people value your judgment as a friend. So I agree about what you're saying about ads in the middle of a video would not work. However, if you really do believe in a product, show us. If you actually use it and trust it, why not?
Ah kudos to you Kristina. :) I love how you guys just openly discuss these things, and put them out on the table as you say. Because it is something that everyones not sure about, so, it's good to have ti out there to figure out, and know what is better and all that. Lol.
i dont think its a problem, i think its okay to say yes. But the companies need to work with you, because this isnt tv, you cant stick a a commercial in the middle of a vlog, your not selling a 20 second spot. a youtube channel is not a network, and if they treat it like one, they really aren't trying anything different and so it defeats the whole point.
I had been under the impression all this time that it was my responsibility to listen and discern what I was being told rather than throwing a tizzy when the people I watch on youtube dare to try and make some money.
I am hesitant to watch videos with advertising in general - something that's popped up like crazy in nerdfighteria lately. So since I'm turned off by vids that even have people so much as going "I HAVE CDS, BUY THEM" it's even harder for me to watch videos where people are advertising products that have nothing to do with them. Ford really did get the perfect formula for theirs - here's a product, go have fun with it. Don't tell people to buy it, just show them what it is and have fun.
i feel like i would be more tempted to purchase a product if i see a person i have grown to understand and enjoy recommending it. i am completely thrown off when i see blatant advertisements (i.e. commercials, pop ups, ads) throwing their product down my throat...
that is why i enjoy when people talk about their own products and fiesta movement videos...
Remember that most viewers are VERY PICKY. If you keep trying to kowtow to what ALL your viewers want, you're never going to make anyone happy.
Just do what YOU'RE comfortable with; we're very opinionated individually, so very indecisive as a whole. You won't get very far by doing what we want.
COMPLETELY TRUE. People can't agree. I personally stopped trying to please anyone but myself a long time ago. Even Fred who has over a million subs - that's only about 5% of the people who use YouTube.
That said, there is a general opinion of people that everyone agrees on, though they react differently to it. Charlie is nice. vlogbrothers make good videos. WhatTheBuck's honest. All we can do is try and help that opinion be better, even if we can't get everyone to react the same way to it.
@nerimon I completely agree. I think that it's good that we're our generation has been given the chance to speak our minds and not just that but have others see it.
I definitely agree with what your saying. I think that most of us really don't like the ads that just say "buy this" and "do that". I think with the fiesta movement there isn't that pressure on you that you get from some ads, which makes it feel not like an ad, you could easily ignore the fiesta part of the videos, and thats good
(1/2) Ford's got this thing so right it's almost disturbing. At first I wondered if they would like the car as such being somewhat absent from your videos, but that's really the old way of looking at it, isn't it? The FFM is the opposite of product placement - not a product wrapped into content, but content enveloped by a product. Plus, they did a great job at selecting a wide range of recognisably individual Web 2.0 professionals.
(2/2) It's certainly the first web site about a car I've been to more than once. As for selling out more generally, you (the Nerdfighter empire) worked hard to gain that kind of visibility and a loyal fan base in the attractive 13-21 segment, and surprisingly enough you got there not by going for the lowest common denominator, but by being intelligent and entertaining and communicating positive values; you would be mad not to capitalise on that, as long as you can retain what makes you unique.
I agree with you completely. Now having said that, was it just me or did anyone else notice the fact that your fingers were splayed for nearly the whole video. Maybe like you were trying dry your nails or something.
I never pay any attention to any of the fiesta movement videos from any of my subscriptions. As soon as I see that a video is a fiesta movement mission video, I'll click on it, and then as soon as the video starts playing, I click the YT logo... all that simply clears it off my subscription listing.
I'm a vlogger, and I'm pretty specific when it comes to who I sub to. It has to be a vlogger. Fiesta Movement = advertisement, not vlogging. Hence I'm not at all interested.
Yea i agree.. i honestly couldnt care less if you guys, who work hard on your videos, wanna make a little extra money from sponsorship deals etc. athletes who work hard for the skill they possess put logos on their shirts, and all that, without a problem. You guys out there in youtube land should be able to perform your equivalent, without fear of scrutiny.
I... still haven't made up my mind about this. I guess if we're going to let go of the ilusion that youtubers never see subscribers as a source of income, then we can at least hope that advertising will take place in creative ways like the Fiesta Movement.
I mean, I'm not excited about it at all, but I'm not going to unsubscribe either. And frankly, the Fiesta Movement is better than some's shameless self-promotion. You don't spend your whole videos trying to sell us your CDs =D
First off, I'm glad you two are discussing this. It's really something that needs to be discussed.
That being said, I agree. I think there's a difference between what you're doing and what they offered Alex to do. The method Ford is using is basically like a themed vlog that you're getting paid for, versus the stupid adverts that we're tired of on the television. I could go in to detail, but you did a very good job of it. :)
I'm glad you guys are discussing this. It's very important that Marketing plans satisfy both ends. It's unfortunate though that some of companies don't understand this, and don't really try to improve, for instance when Alex wrote an e-mail back and they simply ignored him.
I don't want to be rude but you did ask for our opinions and, honestly, although I find your Fiesta vids interesting+quirky+I do watch them, I do have less respect for you for having taken part in this advertising movement. The emphasis in most of these vids is how "cool" it is to drive around and get your fuel paid for, which I see as unacceptable, due to climate change. I believe people shouldn't drive unless they have to, so showing off about free fuel and road trips really isn't "cool". xx
Thanks for your super insightful response...and yes, "we" don't like being advertised to (or at, or upon) when we're on youtube. The whole reason I (and perhaps others) have moved toward youtube and away from mainstream tv is to get away from the advertising giants. Youtube feels more grassroots, downhome, neighbourly and less "eat my happy meal, buy my ford focussy"...it's a COMMUNITY. Why does it have to be about getting stuff and money? Can't it just be about coming together?
As long as advertisers aren't putting words in your mouths, i reckon it's a good thing - publicity for you and them.
But if it were anything like the American gameshow "sponsorship" of the 30-50s like Groucho Marx in a show he used to do "And now a word from your sponsors, Desoto, they make really fine cars, i drive one myself".
As you said, I too don't like beeing advertised and if I get advertised by youtubers, persons that I personaly like I feel unconfortable. It's not that I really feel betrayed by you/them, because as a student, I totally would do the same (or like communitychanel make hundreds of videos for views/money). But it makes it more difficult to enjoy the videos.
wow I was just reading a doctor who/gerard way fiction were he needed to go back to america, and you just said, 'now come back to america, alex'
it was freaky, as for the selling out thing, ads in the middle of videos, a crap idea, but the one were you'd go out film the ad urself and then post it is a good idea, and if tha has nothing to do with the video, it's because I was reading the doctor who/gerard way thing.
I think Michael Buckley's found a really great balance in accepting sponsorships and promoting various products. He's able to incorporate the products into his videos without abandoning his shtick. He's still just as snarky and willing to mock whatever movie or show, but he's also able to get a product out there and give it exposure. He keeps the promotional videos separate from his regular What The Buck shows, and it's clear that he's being paid to promote stuff-- but it's still What The Buck.
What they asked Alex to do is wrong, what you're doing isnt, its a good video idea, missions and the likes. Yeah you gain from it, but we get awesome videos.
To be truthfull id still love everyone im subbed to if they sold out, as long as they sold out in their own way. And they don't sell out Avril Lavigne style.
I'm unlikely to check out a product through advertising via youtube videos, so people can accept all the crazy offers for money that companies offer without affecting me too much. Unless the advertising becomes too evasive (like the 15 second mini-ad in the middle of a video) I won't stop watching.
Yeah, it's pretty much your own judgement. And I think they're doing a job using "everyday people" instead of big-time Hollywood actors. Look at Nationwide who started using their own people telling REAL stories instead of that guy who would read from the dictionary and tell us hypothetical situations.
I honestly don't mind if a youtuber accepts offers from companies. I think you just do what you have to do, especially in this economy. Everyone needs to make money. :) The only thing I have an issue with is people who give positive reviews on products that they OBVIOUSLY have not tried/used for very long. I like honest reviews, not just some cookie cutter crap that is unreal.
I think that so far all the youtubers have done a great job with accepting/declining commercial like things as I've yet to see a commercial inserted in a video, but I've seen many wonderful videos with products incorporated in them. For all the youtubers out there, even though you will most likely never read this, definitely do what you feel is right because we (the viewers) have come to know you, or part of you at least, and if we are true viewers/fans/whatever we will support your decisions!
I like your point that if you believe in the product to support it. For instance musicians have indorsed instruments brands they use for decades and that doesn't seem to put people off. If they really love a Gibson guitars they want to share that, and so what that they get some free gear or some cash. But when they start endorsing Nike, or something equally non-related to them thats where I draw the line.
Great video kristina! The issue about "selling out" is that YouTube allows us, the viewers, to feel that we are in the same level, in the same frame that you are, and when you "sell out" and receive money we feel that you are doing what you are doing not for the pleasure of sake, but for money, and that makes you to sepparate from us, or at least we feel that you are doing so.
I don't think your a sell out. You auditioned and won a place in the fiesta movement, yes its advertsising but as you said its comepletely different. Inserting a clip would most definately make you one though.
I think that YouTubers know what their subscribers like and thus companies should listen to what they have to say in regards to advertisments that they would be willing to place in their videos. I like that Ford is having you do cool challenges instead of just talking about various features the Fiesta has. Seeing that this is a new and exciting way of advertising, I don't see it as selling out. Going to waterfalls and such are things that I could see you doing even if you hadn't been challenged.
I already commented his video, so now its your turn~
I really think it would be better to have youtubers (oh, I'm talking about the camera, bye the way) to make a video with the camera, as in actually record with it. That way us viewers can see the quality and what it would look like. Really, I think THAT would be more effective, because we would know exactly what we would be getting if we went out to buy it.
there's always gonna be someone saying you sold out. even when you haven't. ironically, i've found, especially when you haven't. it seems the harder you try not to sell out, the more people accuse. what you have to do is make sure you're constantly asking yourself, "is this really me? would i buy this anyway?" when you're not being mindful of these questions, you're selling out. the tricky thing is, no one knows the answer to these questions but you. but people think they do.
Adverts actually work well on me. Not that i instantly say okay when companies say BUIY OUR PRODUCT. But I like that adverts do make me aware of products that i might be interested it.
I think you did a great job with the fiesta thingy and the advertizing for it....and also because I know that you know and you know that I know and so you were open and sincere about it. So it didn´t annoy me like it did when I watched other peoples channels (for example ijustine)...
So, don´t worry, you found a great way to deal with it! Have a happy day! Mimi
Great video, and you're right about how youtubers who advertise are quiet about it. As long as it doesn't make their video's less enjoyable to watch, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but inserting a random advert into a video would just ruin the video.
Regarding negative comments you've gotten and may continue to receive... just remember that no matter what you do, there will always be some skeptical person there ready to question your motives and get snarky about your actions. As long as YOU feel like what you're doing is ethical and no harm comes of it, then why not do it? Don't let peoples' closed-minded opinions stop you from seizing opportunities, ever.
I think that if I was watching a video and then out of the middle of nowhere there was an advertisement, I'd get really annoyed and probably stop watching. I get annoyed enough when the Google ads pop up at the beginning of every video. I agree that the Fiesta movement has the right idea and giving you creative control; it's a much better way of getting people to watch, plus it's more entertaining :)
there are tv shows that show the funniest commercials. some people only watch the super bowl for the commercials. advertising a product is fine as long as it's entertaining as well. I don't consider the fiesta movement, or even the carl's jr burger videos, selling "out". they're definitely better than the ads that show up on the bottom of the videos.
As long as it's not contrived, like the random insert commercial here idea, than I think it could definitely work to the YouTuber's and company's advantage. It's getting harder to ignore YouTubers (and other online communities) because we are gaining significance (ex: videos of Iranian election protests). If both parties worked together/have open ended assignments like the Fiesta Movement, this will facilitate the current transition in advertising. Good perspective overall. Love your videos!
I like the ford fiesta movement videos. They're fun to watch and half the time I don't even notice that you're somewhat supposed to be selling me the car. Lol
The Fiest Movement really works, because this one time I was telling my mom about it and she was like, "See, it's amazing that you even KNOW about this car." It really is. Ford does have a handle on it. This is product placement in it's richest form. The videos are still fun to watch.
With the Fiesta Movement, I don't think you were selling out because it was a contest, you had to get chosen, and because you don't get to keep the car forever, just six months.
i like your view on the situation and it's hard for you lot being offered all these opportunities - but take them if you think they're right and a good thing to do :D
i think it's your own business what you like to advertise in your videos as long as you feel good about it and the videos will be entertaining for your audience. so why not
As long as you're still doing your thing, why the hell not? It's not like *I* have to pay you for what you do, and if your videos stopped being entertainment and turned into advertisement 100% then I could just stop watching (though I trist you notto go there XD).
A lot of youtube viewers consider things selling out the really aren't. Alex talked about people accusing him of selling out when he promoted Chameleon Circuits album - which is bizzare. When Kelly Clarkson promotes her new album, is she selling out? For me, the thing about selling out is it's wrong if a. it mean you make videos that aren't good or fun to watch or b. means you promote something just because your getting paid and don't actually like the product.
I've loved watching your Ford Fiesta videos and it's really obvious that you really love your car. I've bought books cause John Green or other youtube people have talked about them and if they'd got paid for that I wouldn't have minded. The Ford Fiesta project is really cool and I dunno if you actually get paid or if you just get the free car, but you clearly care about the cool stuff you do, not the money.
I totally agree, and on the topic of doing it right/doing it wrong: Ford is doing it right, and the Alex-camera company is doing it wrong. Proof: I remember you drive a fiesta, and I don't remember the camera-brand.
don't remember the camera brand? watch his video he mentions the brand AND the model.
imo i think he's just gutted because he missed out on a £1,000 due to stupidity. if he was at home without distractions he'd be quids in by now.
It is a pity they both take things to heart in what people say because in reality they should be getting as much out of it as they can and balls to peoples comments in the negative
Don't you get what I'm saying?I'm talking about what would be the smartest strategy foir the companies, not about what Kristina and Alex should do, that's their call (even though I have my opinion).
I WATCHED his video, and I DON'T remember the brand, while I did remember the brand and model of Kristina's car.
Then what company has the better marketing strategy?
the strategy is the same except the camera people failed this particular time.
do the camera people make cars? NO, do you see alex and co hanging out the back of a red digital camera? NO
oh, btw, the luxury of youtube is you can WATCH the video again if you DON'T remember the camera brand - i remebered it straight away because i thought whilst watching "please don't clutch at straws at a lost oppoutunity and mention the brand AND model please" but he did (and i knew it was coming)
You still have no clue what I'm talking about do you? :p Do you honnestly think a commercial is a good one when people have to watch it multiple times to remember it?
If the camera-people (as you call them, I love it :p) had jsut gotten YT, and didn't just want a 30second clip in the middel of Alex's video, and instead did something original, like the Fiesta-movement, that would work.
Using YT, a new platform, for old methods, forced commercials that interrupt the content, is jsut stupid.
That type of condescending attitude doesn't exactly smack of maturity on your part. Believe it or not, Kristina is an adult with her own bills to pay - ones that can't be paid with street cred alone.
"being offered monetary gain" isn't anything to do with subtly, it's to distinguish from Payment In Kind which an entirely different form of sponsorship.
Awkward flattery and laughing at your own jokes isn't helping your case either.
btw, "Yeah we're dating. So what. He has good ideas and stuff. xD"
i would assume that you thought he had good ideas, good qualities etc to be dating him, and i think that it's good that you've furthered this conversation where your fans and Alex's can see it instead of talking to him solely n private about it.
sending you hugs to help ease the Alex-missing. i know the feeling of hollowness when someone you love goes away.
You and Alex are so spot on on these things. Also Alan.
But, you know, if you made a commercial-video that was actually entertaining (i.e. LisaNova, I know, not the best example, but still) I'd watch it and probably favourite it.
Teehee, your arms flail a lot in this vid. I didn't mind the Fiesta stuff, because you kept it entertaining and it never stopped being a truly italktosnakes kinda thing just to advertise something. I hope the long distance thing works out with Alex :)
italktosnakes+pogobat=the reason I want a Ford Fiesta

Good luck

I think friends offer feedback to each other about products, and a lot of people value your judgment as a friend. i dont think its a problem, i think its okay to say yes. But the companies need to work with you, because this isnt tv, you cant stick a a commercial in the middle of a vlog, your not selling a 20 second spot. a youtube channel is not a network, and if they treat it like one, they really aren't trying anything different and so it defeats the whole point.

Remember that most viewers are VERY PICKY. If you keep trying to kowtow to what ALL your viewers want, you're never going to make anyone happy.
Just do what YOU'RE comfortable with; we're very opinionated individually, so very indecisive as a whole. You won't get very far by doing what we want.
missjo5ie 2 years ago
COMPLETELY TRUE. People can't agree. I personally stopped trying to please anyone but myself a long time ago. Even Fred who has over a million subs - that's only about 5% of the people who use YouTube.
That said, there is a general opinion of people that everyone agrees on, though they react differently to it. Charlie is nice. vlogbrothers make good videos. WhatTheBuck's honest. All we can do is try and help that opinion be better, even if we can't get everyone to react the same way to it.

I definitely agree with what your saying. I think that most of us really don't like the ads that just say "buy this" and "do that". I think with the fiesta movement there isn't that pressure on you that you get from some ads, which makes it feel not like an ad, you could easily ignore the fiesta part of the videos, and thats good
beforeinotice 2 years ago
(1/2) Ford's got this thing so right it's almost disturbing. At first I wondered if they would like the car as such being somewhat absent from your videos, but that's really the old way of looking at it, isn't it? The FFM is the opposite of product placement - not a product wrapped into content, but content enveloped by a product. Plus, they did a great job at selecting a wide range of recognisably individual Web 2.0 professionals.
Glassorchids 2 years ago
(2/2) It's certainly the first web site about a car I've been to more than once. As for selling out more generally, you (the Nerdfighter empire) worked hard to gain that kind of visibility and a loyal fan base in the attractive 13-21 segment, and surprisingly enough you got there not by going for the lowest common denominator, but by being intelligent and entertaining and communicating positive values; you would be mad not to capitalise on that, as long as you can retain what makes you unique.
Glassorchids 2 years ago

I... still haven't made up my mind about this.
You don't spend your whole videos trying to sell us your CDs =D
sonotthepoint 2 years ago
First off, I'm glad you two are discussing this. It's really something that needs to be discussed.
That being said, I agree. I think there's a difference between what you're doing and what they offered Alex to do. The method Ford is using is basically like a themed vlog that you're getting paid for, versus the stupid adverts that we're tired of on the television. I could go in to detail, but you did a very good job of it. :)
bevinkathryn 2 years ago
I'm glad you guys are discussing this. It's very important that Marketing plans satisfy both ends. It's unfortunate though that some of companies don't understand this, and don't really try to improve, for instance when Alex wrote an e-mail back and they simply ignored him.
alorena1 2 years ago
I don't want to be rude but you did ask for our opinions and, honestly, although I find your Fiesta vids interesting+quirky+I do watch them, I do have less respect for you for having taken part in this advertising movement. The emphasis in most of these vids is how "cool" it is to drive around and get your fuel paid for, which I see as unacceptable, due to climate change. I believe people shouldn't drive unless they have to, so showing off about free fuel and road trips really isn't "cool". xx
mysticmegthepeg 2 years ago
Thanks for your super insightful response...and yes, "we" don't like being advertised to (or at, or upon) when we're on youtube. The whole reason I (and perhaps others) have moved toward youtube and away from mainstream tv is to get away from the advertising giants. Youtube feels more grassroots, downhome, neighbourly and less "eat my happy meal, buy my ford focussy"...it's a COMMUNITY. Why does it have to be about getting stuff and money? Can't it just be about coming together?
IndieOna 2 years ago
As long as advertisers aren't putting words in your mouths, i reckon it's a good thing - publicity for you and them.
But if it were anything like the American gameshow "sponsorship" of the 30-50s like Groucho Marx in a show he used to do "And now a word from your sponsors, Desoto, they make really fine cars, i drive one myself".
That'd be bad.

HazzaPistheDocsBFF 2 years ago 2
I'm unlikely to check out a product through advertising via youtube videos, so people can accept all the crazy offers for money that companies offer without affecting me too much. Unless the advertising becomes too evasive (like the 15 second mini-ad in the middle of a video) I won't stop watching.
Neavers 2 years ago
Yeah, it's pretty much your own judgement. And I think they're doing a job using "everyday people" instead of big-time Hollywood actors. Look at Nationwide who started using their own people telling REAL stories instead of that guy who would read from the dictionary and tell us hypothetical situations.
lizvallish 2 years ago
I honestly don't mind if a youtuber accepts offers from companies. I think you just do what you have to do, especially in this economy. Everyone needs to make money. :) The only thing I have an issue with is people who give positive reviews on products that they OBVIOUSLY have not tried/used for very long. I like honest reviews, not just some cookie cutter crap that is unreal.

I think that so far all the youtubers have done a great job with accepting/declining commercial like things as I've yet to see a commercial inserted in a video, but I've seen many wonderful videos with products incorporated in them. For all the youtubers out there, even though you will most likely never read this, definitely do what you feel is right because we (the viewers) have come to know you, or part of you at least, and if we are true viewers/fans/whatever we will support your decisions!
chemistryflavored 2 years ago

Johnintheplace 2 years ago
I think that YouTubers know what their subscribers like and thus companies should listen to what they have to say in regards to advertisments that they would be willing to place in their videos. I like that Ford is having you do cool challenges instead of just talking about various features the Fiesta has. Seeing that this is a new and exciting way of advertising, I don't see it as selling out. Going to waterfalls and such are things that I could see you doing even if you hadn't been challenged.
CallidoraLBlack 2 years ago
I already commented his video, so now its your turn~
I really think it would be better to have youtubers (oh, I'm talking about the camera, bye the way) to make a video with the camera, as in actually record with it. That way us viewers can see the quality and what it would look like. Really, I think THAT would be more effective, because we would know exactly what we would be getting if we went out to buy it.
AnimeAndMusicLover 2 years ago
there's always gonna be someone saying you sold out. even when you haven't. ironically, i've found, especially when you haven't. it seems the harder you try not to sell out, the more people accuse. what you have to do is make sure you're constantly asking yourself, "is this really me? would i buy this anyway?" when you're not being mindful of these questions, you're selling out. the tricky thing is, no one knows the answer to these questions but you. but people think they do.

RebeccaInTheTARDIS 2 years ago
Regarding negative comments you've gotten and may continue to receive... just remember that no matter what you do, there will always be some skeptical person there ready to question your motives and get snarky about your actions. As long as YOU feel like what you're doing is ethical and no harm comes of it, then why not do it? Don't let peoples' closed-minded opinions stop you from seizing opportunities, ever.
beycah 2 years ago
I think that if I was watching a video and then out of the middle of nowhere there was an advertisement, I'd get really annoyed and probably stop watching. I get annoyed enough when the Google ads pop up at the beginning of every video. I agree that the Fiesta movement has the right idea and giving you creative control; it's a much better way of getting people to watch, plus it's more entertaining :)
mellanhead 2 years ago
there are tv shows that show the funniest commercials. some people only watch the super bowl for the commercials. advertising a product is fine as long as it's entertaining as well.

With the Fiesta Movement, I don't think you were selling out because it was a contest, you had to get chosen, and because you don't get to keep the car forever, just six months.

im so going to buy a fiesta and tell all my friends to do it!!!!

i like your view on the situation and it's hard for you lot being offered all these opportunities - but take them if you think they're right and a good thing to do :D

i think it's your own business what you like to advertise in your videos as long as you feel good about it and the videos will be entertaining for your audience. so why not

I 100% agree.

Who cares! I don't mind a couple commercials, as long don't do ONLY commercials! We can deal with it!

I liked the ending "Now come back to America, Alex."
I know this is totally unrelated, but you posted this on my birthday haha

Interesting spin on the discussion Kristina. Very good video.

JustCallMeBen 2 years ago
don't remember the camera brand? watch his video he mentions the brand AND the model.
imo i think he's just gutted because he missed out on a £1,000 due to stupidity. if he was at home without distractions he'd be quids in by now.
It is a pity they both take things to heart in what people say because in reality they should be getting as much out of it as they can and balls to peoples comments in the negative
ha ha ha told u they were naive
i rest my case
bye now

Don't you get what I'm saying?I'm talking about what would be the smartest strategy foir the companies, not about what Kristina and Alex should do, that's their call (even though I have my opinion).
I WATCHED his video, and I DON'T remember the brand, while I did remember the brand and model of Kristina's car.
Then what company has the better marketing strategy?
JustCallMeBen 2 years ago
the strategy is the same except the camera people failed this particular time.
do the camera people make cars? NO, do you see alex and co hanging out the back of a red digital camera? NO
oh, btw, the luxury of youtube is you can WATCH the video again if you DON'T remember the camera brand - i remebered it straight away because i thought whilst watching "please don't clutch at straws at a lost oppoutunity and mention the brand AND model please" but he did (and i knew it was coming)
sweetypie000 2 years ago
You still have no clue what I'm talking about do you? :p Do you honnestly think a commercial is a good one when people have to watch it multiple times to remember it?
If the camera-people (as you call them, I love it :p) had jsut gotten YT, and didn't just want a 30second clip in the middel of Alex's video, and instead did something original, like the Fiesta-movement, that would work.
Using YT, a new platform, for old methods, forced commercials that interrupt the content, is jsut stupid.

fooling yourself that these companys are coming to you for 'help' in their advertising. They are using your ignorance as a very cheap medium.
"being offered monetary gain" is a very subtle and delicate way of putting it, well done.
you are doing it for money and material wealth. what a young, naive, and may i say rather attractive young honey you xD
was the chicken fast food outlet and the golden arch one of my comments ? it was a gem
ha ha ha
bye, i'm off for a Coke (TM)
sweetypie000 2 years ago
That type of condescending attitude doesn't exactly smack of maturity on your part. Believe it or not, Kristina is an adult with her own bills to pay - ones that can't be paid with street cred alone.
"being offered monetary gain" isn't anything to do with subtly, it's to distinguish from Payment In Kind which an entirely different form of sponsorship.
Awkward flattery and laughing at your own jokes isn't helping your case either.

definitely see where you're coming from on this.
btw, "Yeah we're dating.

LisaNova, I know, not the best example, but still) I'd watch it and probably favourite it.
hopolko 2 years ago
Teehee, your arms flail a lot in this vid. I didn't mind the Fiesta stuff, because you kept it entertaining and it never stopped being a truly italktosnakes kinda thing just to advertise something. I hope the long distance thing works out with Alex :)
