It's standard procedure to clear out a certain perimeter of an area holding an event like this. National security! Besides, they let us up way over by the front of the Athletic Center when it became closer to Obama's arrival. There were people holding up signs of Obama's face with Joker's makeup within eyeshot of the Prez as he arrived. That part wasn't shown in this video.

except for remaining peaceful, then BY DEFINITION there are no provisos to be satisfied if you are to exercise your first amendment rights. there are no designated protest zones. you do not need permissions to protest. the police directly violated that girl's first amendment rights.

This was on my campus. The only reason that woman got arrested is because she left the area that THE UNIVERSITY allowed people to demonstrate. And she probably wouldn't have been arrested if she didn't come where next to where classes were going on and screaming from her megaphone. She was causing a ruckus in an area where a group of us were sitting calmly. She didn't have permission to protest in that specific area on our campus it has nothing to do with her 1st amendment right being violated.

I am a UNO student. I have had first-hand encounters of previous protests at UNO and at the heart of what went wrong for the protestors was that they did not apply to the UNO police for permission to demonstrate.

The Obama protestors did get this permission and clearly overstepped their boundaries. I know that UNO facilitates protests and demonstrations of all kinds! Tluna, your description of this video is false. UNO did a remarkable job, allowing this and other protests to happen.

The fault of the arrest lies with the protestors themselves. Our UNO police are wonderful; I've been a student for 4 years there now. I'm graduating soon, maybe even looking for graduate school here. What went wrong in this protest, I guarantee you, was due to the protestors themselves and not the law enforcement.

And yes, the protest area may have been far away, but that was because the event was held in a building away from ANY open spaces. This was the closest field on the campus at all.

The University of New Orleans maintains its own police force. It may be a division of UNOPD, but it acts as its own force. The campus police are not the city police and I have myself seen them in action. They are the best police I've ever encountered, and I do actually live in Jefferson Parish. I live in unincorporated Gretna, so if we call the police, we get the Jeff Parish police, and they're always way worse than I've ever seen the UNO police.

Ticket-holders in the sense that the town hall meeting was restricted to a set number of attendees. Attendance was calculated based on a lottery, like the Michael Jackson funeral. As such, portions of our campus were closed to everyone (including us students) but the ticket-holders (attendees).

Also, UNO is still a public university, but for all intents and purposes, it acts as its own entity and its sidewalks/fields/etc are private property. Signs on campus entrances make this clear as well.
