The skull looks like the skull of an animal like a pig or goat. It is obvioulsy not a human skull. The bones and flesh being eaten are actually from a butcher, pork or ham. A human skull would have worked better but the animal skull is, nevertheless, effective. When Ben drags the body of the woman killed in the house in a later scene you can tell that her face and head are intact.

I'm comparing the different colorized versions of the 1968 film "Night Of The Living Dead." I see the differences between each, the 1978 version, the 1986 version and the 2004 version.
I'm actually suprised at how good the color work looks in this. I had heard before that there were one or two color versions made but that the color work so bad (things that were supposed to be dark colored where light and visa versa and the zombies were green) that the fans hated them, but this looked pretty real.
@mainfactor not really the remake wasn't shot in black and white and the plot wasn't as good as the original movie's plot but Barbra was tougher in the remake though
I love NIGHT!...of the living dead! Whenever halloween aproaches you know NIGHT!...of the living dead will be on TV or you can play the dvd of NIGHT!....of the living dead in the comfort of your living room or if you're lucky, a revival theater will be showing NIGHT!...of the living dead!
Hey "Night" fans, did you know Romero's "Night of the Flesh Eaters" (aka "Night of the Living Dead") was originally written and shot as a comedy? Don't believe it, check it out on Wikipedia. Well, we've gotten hold of the missing reels, and re-cut the picture as it was originally intended. NERD OF THE LIVING DEAD from Big Pickle Media Group is coming June 5th 2011!
This is still the best zombie movie ever made, although I do prefer it in black and white. I was a kid the first time I saw it, my parents had bought our first VCR back in 1986.
For some reason, this was the first movie they bought, and the first that had gone into the VCR. As an eight year old, I couldn't help but be a little scared of what happened, but I ended up absolutely loving it.
Since then, I have always had a love for horror, but especially the zombie genre, and this movie is why.
night of the living dead! duh duh duh ddduuuuhhhh!!!!!! This is one of the most low budget looking films i have ever seen!!!!! Although i did enjoy the scene with the girl with the cake cutter in her chest. Classy!!!!
Actually the color ruins the movie lol, you should never colorise black and white, I mean, look at Barbera's hair, it looks died, and her jacket could have been grey for all we know. hehe, black and white is so much better
They did a good job with the technology they had. But it's hard to colorize a black and white movie and make it look real. The skin and hair is hard to perfect. Everyone looks like they're wearing wigs, and are deeply sunburned.
@PurpleWarrior13 I remember seeing this on WOR 9 (NY) when it premeired for Halloween (around 25 years ago) and the colors were too intense....in the outside scenes, the characters were glowing, and everything was too pastel looking. It lessened the value of the film, but then again, the technology was new at the time. I still prefer B&W to color though.
not that anybody gives a crap but i have all three colorized versions of this film and they're all a little different from each other as far as the colors used.
This film was meant for black and white. Most of the scenes look fine in color but when the zombies are eating flesh off the bones, it looks fake, like pink rubber. In black and white it actually looked quite realistic. In color, more of the imperfections show up, like the makeup. In black and white, you had to use your imagination a bit.
@apeshitdig They did not invest in molding rubber for this movie. They went to the butcher's shop and bought pig parts. It should stil be black and white because that is the way it was filmed. Differnt lighting and shadow for b+w it just looks wrong in color.
I liked the Black and White for the 1968 version myself....it was so rich and vivid, the filmstock used was so superlative.
The shadows and the all around darkness of the film really gave me chills.
A dark house, a crumbling alliance, and the sounds of the enemy trying to pound their way in, with you in the dark not knowing where they're coming from next..
Very effective.
The psychological horror of the film outweighed the horror itself, in a very big way.
Which colorizing version is this? Since the 1986 version was horrible and this one doesn't has the realistic colours of the 2004 re-release; i guess this is the 1997 one.
Hey fartfaces- whether the message about racism was intended or not, IT WAS THERE. Don't bitch on rorrt. These films had messages, something that new horror movies sorely lack.

This film was meant for black and white. Most of the scenes look fine in color but when the zombies are eating flesh off the bones, it looks fake, like pink rubber. The 1990 remake was more speaking
of that, when Barbara said at the end that "we're them and they're us."
You saw the guys shooting the zombies as they hung from trees, and torturing and teasing them, and such.
What you saw was humanity off the wall and with no law and order to control it. It was in us all along, it just took something to bring it out in us.
A slightly higher life form fighting to save itself from the one besieging it. Just a thought.

About racism in the south????!!!!!!!!!
Where did you get that idea????
Neither Romero or Russo who wrote this had any such "message" in mind.
Duane Jones character was not written as black, nor was anything changed about the plot.
Un-real!
eieiowens 2 years ago 3
Why the hell is the goodness of the remake vs the original even i question...
The original film had a message, and though the newer one is almost definetly better made, maybe even better acted..
You need the film to be in context of the time and the place.
The original message was one of racism in the South. Which the remake never quite captured.
as have the remakes of Dawn, and Day of the dead, Dawn original films have a message, of Consumerism, and Science and the Military.
