I tell people all the time, just because a snake is non-poisonous does not mean it will not bite you. If it feels threatened enough it will bite if it can. As mentioned, garter snakes are usually pretty docile and easy to handle. I have handled a lot of snakes and have found that some of the same same species can have very different attitudes and behaviors.

It could if it's big enough, but you have to get it used to handling. Approach it from the side and be sure to wash your hands before and after handling, but they can draw blood, but they aren't poisonous.
TBH, Im not at all suprised he bit you the way you handled it, you should hold it by the tail until it is calm then put your other hand to the side and if it doesnt strike then you gentlyy put it into your hand, leave it to people who know how to handle snakes
Wow a garter snake bit. You bleed worse than the bite is. They have a anticoagulant in there very very very very minimal amount of venom. They have no real way of injecting venom also. So the bite is not really as bad as you made it out.
If you want to minimize the risk of them biting handle it a bit more carefully. They are delicate snakes so don't drop the next one.

Garter snakes are non-venomous. I've had only one bite me and it feels like a grasshoppers legs kicking to get away from you. You cityslickers are just wimps. I'm only 11 and I catch this stuff all the time. It never really hurts and they just let go soon. You city people are abunch of losers.
