  • Wow! What an unbelievable long serve. It has so much side spin on it that it basically spins itself backwards upon hit the other side of the table.

  • LINSANITY

  • Difficulty Level: Asian

  • @messithebest10100 No, Difficulty Level: Ma Lin

Im asian and i can't do it

  • brilliant

  • So you don't have to hit it to the opposite square? Or is that just doubles?

  • @Yerizzo yes, only in doubles

  • Little more.. To make the ball return to the net one has to use the slow short serve, which is not so much used in top level (it's easy). In the slow short serve the bounce in the servers side is closer to net than in this fast short serve. Zhang just miss judged the distance of the serve (by 1-3 cm) and he missed the contact. It's not that heavy side spin but back spin which is heavy. I know this spin though I had chance to return similar in the WC 2006 against WR 51 player from Singapore.

  • The ball would have gone over the edge without the wind effect. This is so called fast short serve where the bounce on servers side is quite near the baseline of the server and the aim is to make it hard for the opponent to put back short. Heavy spin makes the ball harder to control concerning especially distance and the rapid bounces makes the opponent to hurry to the net and controlling short is more difficult when moving fast (one wants to take the short return just before the highest point).

  • He walks away as though nothing had happened :D :D

  • I love Ma Lin but, illegal serve...

  • @SuperFloydTT It's not Illegal, it's above 16 cm in the air, behind the back line of the table and he does not hide the racket nor the ball.

  • @ImpureMint He hide the ball with his left arm...

  • @SuperFloydTT he did! what a dirty bastard...

  • In my opinion, Zhang jike did not brush it because if he really brushed it then it must goes up and forward (According to Newton's second law and law of Impulsion). But it's not obvious at all. You can say, if you like, that he brushed for a couple of nanoseconds that it does not do anything at all.

Anyway, everyone knows that without Zhang brushing, Ma Lin's back spin serve always go back to the net!

  • @TheTTstudio agree with you

  • Ma Lin is clearly the Federer of table tennis

  • how?

  • What a heavy backspin!!!!

  • The serve is illegal as Ma failed to remove his free hand from obstructing Zhang's view. But given that most umpires don't call illegal serves at the top level, what else is to be expected? I doubt Zhang would have been as fooled with a clear view of Ma's contact.

  • ma lin is: king kong

  • It seems to be becoming more popular now to aim to get the serve to bounce (2nd time) PRECISELY on the base-line. Our Head Coach teaches it but I've never seen it as effectively as this. The side-spin is "obvious" (!) but I think the disguise here is that the receiver was expecting the ball to come on to him (a bit longer). The disguise seems to me to be in the slower pace and great length (base line) of the serve.

  • hey guys, guess what..? zhang jike did "brush" the ball ! enough said.

  • DRIVE B!!! xDDD

  • wtf ma lin using cheat codes

  • @lampnmarco jajajajaja

  • @lampnmarco LoL

  • It's Ma Lin's ghost service

  • As hardly any of you have realised what happens on this clip let me explain it!

Zhang Jike reads the service half long and tries to hit the ball. He hits the ball around the same time the ball bounces 2nd time. ZJK hits the ball just barely, enough to stop the ball and create small amount of spin on it. That is why it stops and rolls back on the table.

  • @RKantola totally agreed!

  • i think these chinese watch a lot of manga cartoons how to spin the ball!!:)

  • keep hitting 0:10...

  • Disc breaks all the way around.

  • the other guy looks so stoned

  • @drummerkareemovic

well, that's how zhang jike always looks, so, considering that he is #2 in the world, he should keep on doing whatever it is that he is doing.

  • ghost serve..wish that i can do that..

  • @AndrewkuengTT this is a heavy sidespin

  • ma + lin = legend

  • Mi picho!

  • Zhang Jike never came into contact with the ball....

  • @oslo99 yes he did

  • @oslo99 yes... he touch the ball but the reverse effect does Zhang's hit was really poor, sending the ball direct to the table.... if u dont believe press 7 repeteadly during the video (sorry for my english btw)

  • @oslo99 lie

  • Illegal serve - his arm was used to hide the ball on contact...

  • @MrWazzato

It's obviously legal because jike can see the ball.

  • Zhang jike barely touch that service

  • OMFG!!!!!!!

  • what a ghost serve..

  • trolling irl

  • ZHANG JIKE WAS SLEEPING, YOU CAN SEE HIS EYES, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LOL

  • gamaei

  • Zhang take drugs right!

  • Hahaha, I've played this sport for years and done this countless times. The serve had little to no spin on it, Zhang just flat out missed the ball. That's the part I've done so many times XD

  • 0:05 drugs? o.O

  • 馬琳あたまおかしいんじゃないかな?

  • that wasn't the spin, jike just didn't smash the ball right, he just touched it.

  • @meinCtutWe his racket didnt even touch the ball lol. he just completely missed

  • i mean the player would say: oh shit

  • shit!!

  • Chuck Norris would get this :P LOL

  • OMG! That was simply like magic! That man is amazing.

  • ma lin? you mean MERLIN! lolololol

  • I believe it?

  • How can you even return that serve?

  • Its crazy how the ball suddenly spins down..

  • wait a minute, sorry i dont play table tennis, but i thought serving should be cross court? or issit my eyes playing tricks on me?

  • @LePetitGrosse The serve can go anywhere. Doesn't have to be cross court.

  • I think the reason why Zhang Jike missed it was because Ma Lin's serve looked quite fast at first, perhaps it didn't look like that type of "ghost" serves...

  • Zhanh Jike don't "brushed the ball!! And it's not "obvious", beautiful service anyway!!

  • @Wilbeerthoven yes, he do.

off course thats a good serve, but zhang jike hit the ball with his racket!

  • @Wilbeerthoven I think most of the people here agree with me in that he did brush it because its physically impossible for a ball to return like this at this momentum . and if anyone who have played long enough would know that. And when I said "obvious" I meant for people that played or watch tt regularly not some guy who came to this video through the suggestion box from a lady gaga video

  • @bedroo222222 go watch malin serve... the ball does not bounce out the table... im pretty sure that malin can serve that

  • @chaosSagent if you see this clip carefully you will see that the moment zhang jike swung his bat the ball stopped in mid air . now don't tell me that a swing like that couldn't have an effect to the ball . and yeah if zhang didn't swing the ball would've hit the table one more time then it would go out

  • @bedroo222222

Hm... watch Ma Lin training his serves. He playes backspin serve with side spin very often. With proper placing and power, it stops and curves side just like that at the and of the table. It's possible that the Zhang Jike brushed the ball, or the air from the arm hit affected the ball, but it's not impossible to serve like that trajectory for the ball to go off sideways off at the and of the table...

  • @Wilbeerthoven its obvious that he brushed the ball

  • @ChefVonAllem After the replay i think he "obviously" did both! ^ _ ^

  • Must have a shit load of backspin in such a way that the ball rebounds very little.

  • :p

  • typical Ma Lin's Ghost Serve

  • OMG! Incredible...

    Greetings from Romania.

  • PERFECT ghost serve

  • The serve of a god!!!!

  • OH MY GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omg this one is magic believe me:P

  • It's not Ma Lin who serves, but an ET. :)

  • well.. Jike did touch the ball but too late.. just brushed it...

  • Nice Ghost serve from the master.

  • Waw!!!!!

  • It hit the bottom of the blade right on the edge of the rubber then went straight down into the table, it even follows the exact same path as his swing afterwards. How more obvious can it be, you might be able to do this shot with a rubber ball on a rubber table but that's not the case, there is no magic table tennis :D

  • F*ck off did he touch it lol even if he slightly brushed it the spin on the ball would have changed it to much, no way in hell did he touch it, watch the 3rd bounce it doesn't wobble before the bounce but kicks straight after :/ no touch

  • Some people claim that ZJ brushed the ball because they don't believe the ball would go that way simply by Ma Lin's serve or they never saw this kind of serve. Whether ZJ brushed the ball or not, no one can tell by this video's definition. But I can tell you that it is 100 % possible that ball will go this way by serve without any brush because I saw it by naked eye. I believe someone else must have the same experience.

  • @timothyjesus It's true. Really strong under spin can do magical stuff.

  • so sao!zan!

  • its obvious that zhang jike brushed the ball , hence , the spin . it was bad timing for zhang jike . I bet he didn't see the clip " ma lin serve " lol

  • @bedroo222222

    ZJK brushed the ball

  • @bedroo222222

youtube: ma lin serve in detail

  • @bedroo222222 zhang jike fans ? lol...

  • @bedroo222222 He never contacted the ball. The ball made its 2nd bounce before zhang jike even made his swing.

  • @bedroo222222 he never touched the ball maybe the wind from the paddle but not the paddle itself

  • @bedroo222222 he didnt brush the ball , if he did it we go to the net . its obvious he didnt even touch it ...bad timing for zhang jike

  • hm yes its good but all he has done is that he has made a short serve with great side-spin.

  • I think ZJK slightly brushed it, OR, the wind he caused with his swing caused the ball to stop, then the spin did the rest, still, awesome serves as usual :D

  • @DKPOWA I don't think ZJK touched it at all... He was way off on that one. Should of pushed it LOL

  • @DKPOWA idd, he brushed it a little, tbh nothing special about that serve beside the heavy backspin.

  • @tshirttime84

no backspin... side topspin more towards right of Ma Lin.. watch the ball pick speed after 1st and 2nd bounce..

  • @khoolguy07 for sure backspin with little sidespin of course, but no topspin at all. Ma lin just makes a move after he hits the ball to make the oponent think its topspin. But for sure this is backspin..

  • @tshirttime84

    @tshirttime84

hehe.. nopes.. its more like left hand shakehand side spin.. I tried it out.. he pull the bat slighlty front and then sidewards in swing angle (bat swingin from his chest and away). this would give an extraordinary side spin depending when the ball is touched. If the ball is touched by bat angled n moving towards chest, its a left-to-right side spin.. if its touched when the bat is moving away from chest its a right-to-left side spin..

  • きもっw

  • the spin is so crazy!!

  • That was friggin awesome!!

  • LOLOLOL OMG its like magic

    ma lin = master

  • kkkkkkkk

    yes

  • @17teacmrocks ...... or not.....

  • the ball got ABS ( auto braking system) LOL! amazing serve!
