If you listen to Oscar Peterson talk about Nat Cole, he talks about the difference between an insipid phrase and one using punctuation on certain notes. The difference is like listening to a speaker that speaks with everything a constant volume level with no emphasis on any words...conversation vs a more computer rhythm voice with no accents.
In that way she reminds me a little of Nat Cole. Her music interpretation is full of interest and changes in articulation and dynamics.
OMG! Though I’ve followed Keiko and her music for years, I just never knew how awesome her music is in the live venue. It seems that her music on CD, while great, just doesn’t do her justice. The passion, the power, the emotion in her live shows; she is a goddess indeed.
I like her music very much. She gets some of the finest musicians playing with her. Interesting blend of smooth jazz and new age. I agree. I can listen to her for hours also. I like it when she breaks away from her normal sound a bit, just for a variation. "Ruins of Sonora" is one of the those breakaway pieces.
Good to see she finally won an award or two. Excellent composer also.
