  • bright eyes are my favorite band. and they have so many great songs. in fact all of their song are amazing. but whenever I end up listening to Ariennete again, I realize that this definitely is their best song.

  • Conor's intonation from 2:50 thru the end, absolutely kills me every time i listen to this. Its so raw and harsh, and just overflowing with desperation. I think everyone feel like that sometimes, but its amazing what he can make his pain sound like...medicine for all of us.

  • I normally can't stand fan made videos of songs but whoever made this seems to understand the gritty origins of this song.. Well done..

  • beautiful introduction.

  • i've learnt 150x more from bright eyes then from any class ever

  • his voice is perfectly imperfect...gives these amazing lyrics depth & meaning...

  • amazing.

that's their best song, I think.

  • @Connect2German ur dicks loose

  • @Connect2German he has an amazing voice. wouldn't be 'Bright Eyes' if Conor Oberst voice wasn't imperfect. that's what makes the music so intense. sending shivers down your spine.

  • @Connect2German This was the first Bright Eyes album I ever listened to and I thought the exact same thing you think and skipped right over this song. Now after becoming obsessed with them for years now I rediscovered this song and am just completely amazed. I've grown to love his voice. He's a folk singer. He's not trying to be Mariah Carey. We have enough "artists" with nothing other than a pretty voice. Conor transcends that.

  • So many words of great meaning... Beautiful sorrow

  • I really like this video. By the way I have a guinea pig named Arienette and I sing this to her sometimes

  • He is brilliant.

  • His voice is perfect with its imperfections. Anyone can sing along with his music and not feel self conscious.

  • i'm obsessed with this song. love love love everything conor does

  • and the moon, it brings silver;.. but never sleep

  • I don't think you people understand that musical lyrics are pretty much the same thing as poetry.

  • When you apply what is simular to poetry to music you're basically saying "This is how it should be read and taken" So no, because he doesn't have a 'beautiful' voice I dont think he should just right it in a book. For me this flawed sound is what adds such depth to Bright Eyes

  • @BRAUNOCA i agree dear..

  • I like him.I like this imperfection of his voice. It adds sth to the music.Hell, was Bowie the perfect singer? No but wrote history.Who needs perfection?being genuine is the matter.Take care

  • Comment removed

  • I agree he should write poetry! He sure as hell can't sing!!!

  • What is this video? I really love it, truly fits the song.

  • Stay with me Arienette, till the wolves are away.

  • i love the darkness. i feel such a melancholy happiness for conor; his newer music reflects a triumph over his demons, yet i miss the beauty in his pain. i have yet to conquer mine

  • @mCanoodles411 Have you heard Ladder Song off his newest album? You are right his older albums were more saturated with dark songs but he has only grown more eclectic since. I enjoy the contrast of dark and light in his newer albums.

  • I'm still yet to find my Arienette.

  • now stay with arienettte till the wolves are awake..

  • It makes my soul happy...

  • i love the name of this girl :3 if i ever have a daughter her name is going to be arienette, annette, or evangeline. ^.^ if i ever have a boy........i havent figured that out xP

  • @HevanlyDevilXxXx

name him Padriac, like im going to.

  • @WintersEndOfficial haha ya mabey one day they'll meet too xD how strange would that be? lol

  • @HevanlyDevilXxXx how about Conor? lol

  • @wackydackymacky haha totaly xD though that would creep me out... my cousins name is connor lololololol

  • @HevanlyDevilXxXx Thats what I am going to do :) I am going to pester my future wife, to let us call our baby daughter Arienette

  • This song is godly...Conor Oberst is God. Done.

  • im in love with this guys voice. < 33

  • ^_^

  • yea thats what i pictured when i heard this song

  • "so don't leave me here" at 2:46 gives me chills :D <3

  • i remember listening to this song before their concert in 2007. i can recall the exact way i felt listening to it. something special..

  • @glowstick yeah that interview was a joke.

  • I love the imagery of the lyrics. Amazing rhetoric!

  • I don't think his voice is imperfect. He just doesn't sound artificial. Its so wonderful to listen to.

  • how about this arienette? how does she fit into all of this?

I prefer not to talk about it, in case she’s listening.

    oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize she’s a real person.

she’s not. I made her up.

    oh, so she’s not real.

just as real as you or I

  • @glowstick1717 Lol gotta love the mock interview. It's a shame Conor wasn't present for it!

  • @glowstick1717 I think Arienette is 3 women from conor's life. one of them being Winona Ryder. He just merged them all together into one psycho on the CD

  • The gold that washes off is just about the cheapness of the watch or locket you sell your secrets for. I doubt it'd have more meaning than that but I could be wrong. These lyrics are pretty self-explanatory if you ask me.

  • His music was ment to be whatever the listeners want it to be. Maybe the things he sings about dont litterally apply to himself, but in some way he wrote them so that a little of himself could be represented by each song. He talked about wanting to create feelings (listen to the end of An attempt to tip the scales) He just knows how to make people feel whings without actually talking directly about something. Its all symbolism.

  • @FauxFauxFaux21 I believe you are right! His lyrics have an abstract meaning attached to things that are truly occurring in his life at different times. I notice that with all his songs. That's what makes it unique for himself and everyone else alike. I guess that's why everyone has different interpretations of his songs. He uses tons of symbolism and it works pretty well.

  • love this

  • this song changed my life. and my name, legally.

  • @arienettealthena

    thats very inspiring!

  • Has such a Victorian sound...

  • Does this song remind anyone else of Stephen King's Children of the Corn?

  • I <3 this song, I've heard it so many times I could sing it backwards in my sleep!

...and in math class when boredom strikes

btw my math teacher was not amused

    XD

  • one of my favorites. love it

  • zarquirian1: a secret always loses it's "golden quality" if you don't keep it close to your heart. Telling it to people you trust, care about or love is something different than "selling it" to get someone to trust, to care about, to love. I think, in our fragile moments, or lonliest moments even, we might fall for that.

  • and cipher.. no really..?? crazy isnt a medical diagnosis thank you for clearing that up.. crazy is when u've been through extreme amounts of pain, like physical pain.. u are permanently scarred from it, ur emotions are heightened, and u can definitely hear the pain in that persons voice, like they've actually been thru some isht.. killing someone is not crazy, its bad, or evil rather.. not crazy.. overreacting and breaking something is not crazy.. its insane.. im no sheep sorry..

  • @MaDkLap MadDK, could you reply to my response? that way ill respond faster. So you're saying that you can hear insanity in his voice but he doesn't seem insane? that seems slightly paradoxical... Our mental states are as they are, and we can only see other ppls mental states thru their actions. Insanity is generally considered to be more of an abnormality, so abnormal behavior (killing ppl) would be abnormal. I think you're more thinking along the lines of being "scarred" , right?

  • @zarquirian1 u can hear crazy in a persons voice, like pain suffering etc.. insanity u can as well, its more in the direction of their voice.. in character and personality.. well connor is def not crazy, i think ppl attempt to throw their voices once they've heard crazy.. i mean the other day i just saw a pic of a friend who was 'trying' to look crazy in a picture and it did rather look kind've crazy.. its just annoying to see ppl do that isht, and slightly pathetic..

  • @zarquirian1 abnormal behavior can be a lot of minor things like being manic and thinking all day about how ur mind works expecting to be able to somehow change it.. been there.. insanity is like playing poker and looking down seeing what u have and then instantaneously thinking u have something different therefore throwing off ur opponent as to wat u have.. it is actually quite genius if it was an 'in control' state of being.. that is why they say there is a 'thin' line..

  • ppl that r truely fucked up.. do not have the mental capacity to make or perform.. did u know w/ schizophrenia u become uninterested w/ every day things that u use to love.. do u know who Syd Barrett is..?? he had schizophrenia, vocalist for Pink Floyd in their early days.. he could not make music anymore at some point, he was too messed up.. medication doesnt just make u right, all it does is nullifies the illness..

  • well.. him saying "that kind of gold washes off".. not sure if u know wat that means, but hes talking about insanity rather then madness.. so he IS actually talking like this stuff applies to him.. and most of there music is completely insane.. but i know for a fact ppl that are truely insane are incapable of making music cuz there so fucked up mentally.. there truely is a thin line between insanity and genius.. that line is the fact that the insane cant use the potential of there minds..

  • @MaDkLap "the fragile keep secrets, and they'll sell them for nothing, the cheap watch or locket, that kind of gold, washes off." Fragile people keep secrets, they can't expose their real emotion, and if they do sell them, they're cheap and superficial, because they can't give you the full truth- they're too weak for that, (maybe they can't admit it to themselves too) so they give you a fake secret, who apears true but this appearence "washes off". That's how i read it. its music. you decide.

  • @zarquirian1 about the gold washing off, he says "they'll sell them for nothing, a cheap watch or locket, that kind of gold washes off"- insanity is often referred to as yellow or bright, if u generalize words by color u see this.. like flake is yellow, flakes are very insane.. insanity is like someone asks u if u believe in God, and u do, but u tell them u believe in living life and ur serious.. because u dont want them to know how u think.. this way the game continues.. the deception..

  • @zarquirian1 deception is wat insanity is all about, to them its a game and its funny that u dont get it.. madness is insane, but its the type of insanity that u actually have to burn and suffer and lose urself to attain.. its mind games that only u and other ppl that r 'mad' understand, and u talk without ppl knowing where ur going or wat ur saying.. it can be used in other ways obviously tho, but mostly its about secrets and mind games, out smarting each other.. creativity..

  • @MaDkLap you can interpret the song any way you want, it's music. a lot of the time gold is used as "pure substance", truth, etc. so that's how i got my way of looking at it. What's your difference between insanity and genius? Everybody lies...

  • @zarquirian1 to elaborate.. the insane r like 'hush'.. they want u to think they're sane.. ppl that r mad want u to think they're insane.. its like building blocks.. a higher level of insanity.. cuz u still dont have a clue wat they really r and thats funny to them cuz they're screwed in the head.. doesnt take much for the insane to get kicks.. hence a flake.. its all actually quite ingenius.. sounds like there talking about one thing when there really making fun of u..

  • @zarquirian1 and the funny thing is, ppl that r sane.. write off the insane as just being crazy or insane and thats why they talk all crazy and dont make sense when really its a joke to them, its all fun and games.. no one really knows wat they're talking about.. "there" i just wrote a book..

  • "that kind of gold washes off".. he really talks like he knows.. very annoying.. and a lot of his music is.. its for children.. or maybe girls.. i actually am crazy.. for watever reason in this song the dude sounds crazy in his voice.. guarantee u he still thinks a family member dying is some crazy shit.. hes just a child..

  • @MaDkLap so you're saying that he wants to recreate insanity? I don't think so...he seems to want to create emotion and show his perspective. I mean, i can see if you're offended if he was trying to recreate insanity & wasn't insane but i doubt you can deny him emotion...i feel like he acts like he knows because he knows what he sees, and that reality is all he's talking about...lol, not that i know...

  • @MaDkLap

You are crazy? Crazy isn't a medical diagnosis. Are you attempting to say you're schizophrenic? How do you know for a fact that people who are 'truly insane,' whatever that means, are incapable of making music? Please keep your illigitimate, unintelligent opinions to yourself.

  • really good song.. but music is just music.. i know im gona get flamed for this but.. connor oberst is no musical genius.. if u truely understood wat he was talking about, its not something that applies to him.. meaning it didnt come from his life.. he might understand wat its like to be insane thru the power of 'thought'.. but hes talking about someone elses life.. which pisses me off and makes me think hes pretty shallow.. if u werent evil, would u say evil shit, no its not urs to say

  • This song is wonderfuf! I love, this voice is so attractive!

  • so my friend has this really intense obsession with Bob Dylan, and we always end up talking about him, and the more she talks about his awkward quirkiness and poetic philosophical writing style.... the more I think about Conor Oberst.

haha I'm not comparing them or anything, I'm just saying....Conor Oberst is a musical genius

  • Comment removed

  • @xNorthrnDownpourx

I don't see why not to compare them. I do.

  • @xNorthrnDownpourx I bet a lot that Dylan was Conor's inspiration at, at least, a short time in his life.

    Dylan is king.

  • @junebaggins Dylan does write good lyrics. but I do believe that he's not king enough to reach Conor's talent in making you feel EVERYTHING. so intense.

  • @migled9 Well, we're not the same person. Dylan may not arise the same emotions in you that are proclaimed into me by his words. Fortunately, your statement is pure opinion.. I don't agree with any of it, but I will defend your right to state it. We all have our own heroes and definitions of those words. Good for you!

  • @junebaggins I couldn't agree more. I like Dylan a lot, Joan Baez as well (you possibly know her). but Conor's music fills my heart with endless emotion.

but that's just how I feel. if Dylan makes you feel that way that's wonderful.

  • Totally agree with "hayleehysteria"

Conor is an amazing musician, artist, and philosopher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Conor Oberst is ingenious.

He should write a book filled with poetry like he puts in his songs.

  • @hayleehysteria some other artist have tried that and it didn't work out too well for them, like jewel and billy corgan

  • @hayleehysteria

no way! is his music not enough for you!?

  • @seddygreenburg

There is never enough Conor Oberst.

  • @hayleehysteria

I would paste each page of his book around muh room covering the walls, so when i lay in my bed, i could ponder about the walls and read such magnificant words and cherish them till i fall to rest.

he should write an Epic Poem - even if any poem he were to compose would be magnificently epic xP like my pun? XD - and then we could all cherish his words to endless extents. :3

  • digital pixel hair dust

  • awesome song

  • whoa sorry, I mean ARIENETTE!

haha with one n. i'm not sure why I typed two

  • I'm trying to guess what this song is about. Don't judge because I know some of you guys will :D

But I think this is song is amazing because it's about a girl name "ariennette". And conor hasn't actually met her yet, but he wants to. Ariennette is how he pictures his perfect "match". Someone who can save him from the suffering. The wolves would be this.

And in the song Sunrise Sunset, he talks about how he wants to know where she is, in one part. So...yeah.

    THIS SONG IS AWESOME!

  • well said

  • thank you :)

  • The pictures are really good, they go well with the song

  • "And the sad act like lepers;

    They stick to the shadows.

They long to ring bells of warning,

    to tell of their coming,

So that the pure can shut their doors."

... Said how it is, in the most ingenious way...

    Conor Oberst <3

  • hrmm what cd is this song on?

  • Fever and Mirrors

  • Give me the voice of a whisper...

  • TheOakdick, the Mars Volta do not suck. They are simply misunderstood, and are actually a phenomenal band, mainly because they do not conform to what the public wants to hear. Also, music is such a subjective thing, you can't exactly say that a band sucks just because you may not like them. So please take your hate somewhere else.

And this song is absolutely beautiful, I <3 Connor Oberst :)

  • are you kidding ? the mars volta is an amazing band! your right, they are just misunderstood. thanks for standing up for them :]

  • The Mars Volta are fucking genius

  • "Oh, stay with me Arienette

    until the wolves are away."

    I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The thing I like about Conor Oberst song writing,is that its true. He doesn't lie. In some songs they say, Everything is going to be okay, or something of the such, but their not being entirely honest when they say that.

  • amazing vid. Poetry is shocking..and disturbing but moving!!

  • Kurt cobain is more of a singer. Conor oburst is and always will be poet. there is a big difference.

  • they are different genre's and meaning behind their lyrics. You can't compare them anymore than you can compare rice to fruit.

  • exactly.

  • That's the truth.

  • i prefer fruit to rice

  • yea rice can be good though. ha yea connor is a great poet

  • Great song !! XD

  • amazing pictures!

    shit video effect..

    amazing song!

  • the singer (Conor Oberst) has *had* a very imperfect voice, its probably one of the reasons why he is so unbelievably loved by those who take the time to hear his music, its unique.

    he is pure gold

  • @OnaHillWithLove What are you talking about? His voice isn't imperfect at all, it fits his style just fine and it's just fine vocally. I get what you're saying though generally...

  • @OnaHillWithLove exactly

Bob Dylan never had a great voice

    still totally incredible

  • @OnaHillWithLove pure shit...

  • @OnaHillWithLove It's just folk style-- Bob Dylan and Neil Young don't have conventionally "good" voices but it adds context and texture to their phonetics and overall quality of the song.

IMO, it sounds like they went through hell and drowned it with drugs and alcohol. Makes songs more meaningful!

  • If you listen to music for visual perception, then you are fucking dumb.

And for ''humming'' instead of singing? I don't even have a proper response for that dumb shit.

  • 5 months and I return to apologize for offending you. I said nothing ill. Though I'm not a fan of any musical artist I see it as my right to express my opinion about anything in anyway I see fit. I said nothing that was deserving of being called "fucking dumb". Perhaps you were having a bad day. Take care. (Maybe stop to think, "oh this is the first time he's listened to them, and maybe they aren't his taste?")

  • so don't leave me here

    with only mirrors watching me

this house it holds nothing but the memories

and the moon it leaves silver but never sleep

and then the silver turns to gray

    oh, stay with me Arienette

    until the wolves are away

    are away......

This is me every single day, this is my life.

  • Comment removed

  • probably one of m favorite bright eyes songs.

  • This song is so dark

    yet so beautiful..

  • love his voice.

    so, soft.

  • only Bright Eyes can make me cry for no reason and make it the happiest moment of my life. Its happy, understanding tears.

  • You should listen to elliott smith too if your looking for happy tears.

  • ahahahhaha

  • "Oh, stay with me Arienette,

    until the wolves are away

    are away. "

  • omg this is so amazing

  • this takes me back

  • Is this song on an album?

  • yeah, it's on the Fevers & Mirrors album

  • This song is sung with such inner feeling. I'm so glad I have Bright eyes on my playlists. Conor a true artist who sounds different on each song- like a different artist. So passionate with his music

  • how'd you get this song??????

  • You, my friend, are an uneducated idiot.

  • oh really and how is that

  • dont compare this to nirvana. thanks.

  • I Love it you did veryveryveryvery great hope you come up with more

  • cute

  • too fuckin awesome for words! can't enough of Bright eyes. Love Conner Oberst!

  • It's Conor. :) haha i thought it was conner for years though, its all good

  • I love this song so much.

  • His voice is so beautiful. And the lyrics are beautiful!! ♥

    Also, nice vid. (:

  • dear god i love conor.

  • wow, really nice video.

"SO DON'T LEAVE ME HERE, WITH ONLY MIRRORS WATCHING ME!"

    self reflection sucks.

  • i dont know what it is but...I JUST LOOOVE THIS VID ! and ofc the song too ;P

    love it <3

  • </3 makes me remember all those girls that left me for something better.... then i feel like suicide is the right choice... then i remember all those great experiences i wish to live again...

trying to find a balance, stuck in the loop.

both other songs i love, and have a lot in common with life...

Genius composition on this piece tho, i absolutely love the acoustic + lyrical...

"Stay with me arienette untill the wolves are away..."...

  • Just perfect..

  • bist du krank oder so? oö

  • love the vid and of course the song!

  • this is such exceptional poetry..

  • i liked the pictures that you couldnt see the edges, the ones with edges were too abruptly ending and beginning, it made me focus on the edges rather then the actual picture. good shit though

  • wiklich tolles Video! Selten sowas wirklich gutes gesehen ... passt alles =)

  • that very first picture was taken by laura jade from flickr !!!
