The main reason of placing a detention centre on Christmas Island is because, if anyone got out of the jail, than they would be on an Island and they wouldn't be able to get on to mainland Australia or it's state, Christmas Island is like 3 - 4 hour flight from Western Australia, having it on a place like that is really good, and if they were to place it on mainland Australia, they could run in to a town or capital city, even get on a train to get to a city!

In Villawood Detention Centre for instance, they must pay $139 a night, including children whether they like it or not.
