Had this happen to me also. Took my phone into Verizon and they gave me a replacement. Mine had this problem after I took the back cover off and put it back on. My replacement phone hasn't had the problem yet but I see people have suggested tightening screws. So now if it happens I have a solution instead of driving a half hour just to get a replacement.
Remove the back cover to reveal small screws in each corner. The top two should be revealed and the bottom two covered by small "PALM" stickers. You will need a T5 Torque screwdriver ( a 1.2mm flathead also works ) and tighten both the left and right screws at the top of the phone. This will put more pressure on the "binding" around the phone tpwards the top, and will hold the switch in either position you set it towards.
FIXED IT!! take the back cover off and you will see in each corner there is a tiny sticker that says palm on it. pick those off with a needle. you will need a T5 torque screw driver to tighten the screws up. worked like a charm!!!!!!!! i had dropped the phone and i guess the screws were loose and not holding the connections tight.
does the same thing for mine, my ringer off switch silences my ringer in either the on or the off postion. I have to steady the switch between the on and off postion for the ringer to be on. Annoying!
For whatever it's worth, this problem came back on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Pixi's. We're now on Pixi #5 and (so far) it hasn't recurred. But we've only hat this one for about 40 days. It may come back.
I actually work for Sprint, and I come across this a lot when it comes to people who buy phones from best buy and radio shack.... When they take the back off the pixi, they take it off and/or put it back on the wrong way and it actually breaks that little switch.
Tried that with my PIxi but it wont do that. It's either you push it up to ringer or down to silence. Point blank. So i guess yours had a glitch of some sort.

Yeah, I went back to Best Buy, demonstrated the problem and they gave me a replacement that doesn't do that.

I took it back to the store that sold me the phone, showed them the issue and they gave me a brand new one that didn't do that.

mine does this, too.

maybe it pushing on it just changes the symbol. perhaps it will still ring even if you're pushing the switch down
