Wow. 5:35 is freaky. Very surreal. They say words are powerful. He talked about "when I'm dead and buried" on his death day.  Too bad he didn't get what he wanted, which was a long time.

I am curious -- he hadn't left the Dakota yet for the day, and met Chapman yet, when this recording was made, had he? And when was this interview found -- since few sites mention it (just Rolling Stone, in many cases)? And what did you mean that they talked that evening and the tapes are missing or destroyed? Wasn't he at the Liebovitz photo session in the evening? Or were the mystery tapes done on another evening? Thanks.

The Annie Leibovitz sessions took place the morning of John's murder. This interview started around 2PM and ended about 5 PM. After that, John went downstairs and signed Chapman's autograph and then went to the studio where he finished Walking on Thin Ice. The tapes that were destroyed were of a conversation John had with Jack Douglas on the night of his murder.

So the convsn u speak of occurred while @ studio working, and not been a long conversation really, or he couldn't have finished the song. I'm guessing? By the way, thank u 4 yr efforts; u obvsly know some people who knew John. I only know 1 who did. (Janov, in fact. But I don't know him well. He thot I was something, 4 some reason. i don't get the sudden, abrupt connection he makes between being a good, involved father and then mentioning how he's more a feminist. One has nothing at all to do with the other, as anyone would know who cares to look at how modern day feminists have basically contributed to tearing fathers and children apart with all the corrupt family law bullshit.

5:38 man how sad and ironic is it when he said "i consider my work won't be finished until i'm dead a buried and i hope that's a long long time" sadly not =(. So many things he said are so ironic because he said things in that interveiw that nobody knew at that time would mean so much just a few short hours later.

unfortunately, he did come full circle... from the death bells in the beginning of his first record, John Lennon/ Plastic Ono Band, and the starting over of Double Fantasy... Irony is a cruel thing...

I do not know officially and I have not had the courage to talk to Jack and find out what was said, but as I said, the rumors are that John was having a very deep conversation about life and death with Jack Douglas. Like a brother to brother talk. Again, it's just speculation and I have no official idea. I would ask Jack that question, but I just can't. I can't bring myself to ask him that.

In my opinion Double Fantasy was not John's best work. I think that John had much better albums in the past, some of which were solo, and some of which he recorded with the beatles. John himself admitted that (Just Like) Starting Over was junk, and that he didn't even want the track to make the album. I like Starting Over myself, and I think that certain musicians discourage their work, because they don't think it's good enough...as so many of US tend to do.

The comment at 5:38 " i consider that my work won't be finished until im dead and buried and, i hope that;s a long,long time" is so heartbreaking. Knowing that Chapman was stood outside waiting.

Sound's so stupid but i wish i could go back in time to this day and prevent what happened.

@NeilFraudstrong She was actually selling Holsteins though. They owned a cattle farm together. She sold one for $250K. I don't know if selling cows is also and allusion to something other than actually selling cows.

thanks for posting this. cant help but get the impression lennon was on his way out whatever happened though. he sounds like a guy twice his age in all these later interviews and looks pretty ill too + his music had also gone downhill (in my opinion) . I also read somewhere that he supposedly told the producer of double fantasy some freaky stuff during the session that would of followed this interview but that might be bullshit. either way i get the impression he was probably pretty fucked up

Jack Douglas destroyed that tape so it will never be known what was said, but I, too, have heard that. In 1980, John had been suffering from recurring dreams of being murdered by gunshot. It's true, look it up.

Yoko isn't the only one who didn't understand the basic meanings of Double Fantasy. Millions of people miss the clues which reference the myth. Double Fantasy, things are not always as they appear. Two lives, public and private. A myth and reality. Strength and weakness, Another is I'm Losing You, at the end of Dear Yoko, John says, "Hey! Next time when you come over, don't sell a cow! Spend some more time with me and Sean!!"

There are tons of references that refer to the myth.

This is heartbreaking. The man was pumped for making a lot more music and so optimistic about the future. It sounds like he finally understood himself, had matured as a man/father/spouse. Dare I say, he was mellowing, yet smarter? I would love to hear an interview with him recorded today, commenting on our times. More so than any other celebrity death, his murder pisses me off. We were all robbed.

I don't know if he signed on with his new wife?

@unfortunatebeam Why Julian his first son was cut out, even after his death I have no idea of what was going on there. He had written a letter to Julian and Yoko did not send it to him. When he died Julian asked for the letter and she said NO, he spent millions at auctions buying things back including that letter that were John's and auctioned off by Yoko, his "loving" wife.
