Gringoire is my favorite character in this piece. He honestly loves life, but he enjoys it in some kind, philosophic and passing-by way never getting stuck in the dirt. All others are tormented by their desires, even Quasimodo, while Gringoire is watching it all with an ironic smile. And at the same time, I think that he would have made the best husband for Esmeralda :) He may be a poor good-for-nothing poet, but he has a good heart and an intelligence to share :P
