I think you have to be careful overall with your wrists and arms. This technique makes it really easy to play healthy and fast at the same time. I love Moeller technique on the Hats. Its Incredible how easy you can get wonderful accents out of them. Also i want to say i´m a big Metal Fan too. But most of us Metal Guys have to come over the old fashioned (for example) Ulrich Hi-Hat Puncher Style. Nothing against that but its not really the best way for your nerves and muscles in the arm.
@samm1809 Anyone can get carpel tunnel. It doesn't matter if you are playing Metal or not. It is caused from repetitive stress on the Carpel Tunnel. Over time stress can build up to the point were you will hurt yourself. A lot of metal drummers put stress on their body to play fast yes. So in a way they are a some what more prone to get repetitive strain. George Kollias uses this kind of fulcrum, he is a fast and great drummer. But he warms up. Thank you for the informational video. Dave Rules!
It's quite simple folks. Hold your sticks however you want and however they feel comfortable to you. If you grip feels good and you are happy with what and how you play, then you're good to go! If you watch very closely when Dave or Steve Gad or ANY other player that uses "traditional" grip, you'll notice the grip loosens up so much that you can barely call it a "grip". I used both, STILL use both depending on what I'm playing. Matched for more straight forward playing, traditional for jazz.
.......dumbshet......traditional grip comes from the way the old army bands used to play, with their drum on an 45 angle hanging from their shoulder.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Traditional grip comes from the natural spiral chi flow, spinning through your body - your energy field... It's the same relaxation of the field when you hold a guitar or a violin, or a baby, or a rifle, or a hoe. Traditional grip is one way thinking regrettably. Left or right. Symmetric grip (like matched grip) allows you much more to use both halves of the brain, of course separately. Other way is to switch between left trad and and right trad... I've seen this done by army snare drummers.
I understand what your saying, and in my opinion matched grip is definitely superior for the likes of timpani and steel drums etc, but i recently changed my grip from matched to trad, i don't think it has technically improved me, but i am equally as good in matched and trad grip. but the one thing it has done, it has enhanced my feeling towards what i am playing, and feels so much better, and now feels perfectly natural for me, so calling it a perversion is a little much
From my point of view, these are the BASICS. The very start point, the Fundamentals. With this data in mind, we can start a good road on drumming world, or even correct our "old practices" and techniques. I am happy of Dave's approach to a natural technique. I can use it in my drumming, and develop, of course, my own natural feeling in relation to my body figure. Thanks Dave!!!
Much respect for someone who is successful at something and still goes back to revamp the way they do things. The act of a true artist moving forward i.e. Tiger Woods, Dave Weckl etc.
I respect Dave so much as a musician. But man sometimes he thinks to much into it. I know hes way better then I'll ever be but u have to gain ur own feel on and around your music maker. Jazz it up Dave!
are you nuts? youll learn more from dave about technoque than sitting behind your kit! why do you think all the metal drummers get carpel tunnel syndrome?
completely agree, and metal is what i play most!! :) im self taught and i played with horrible form for years, because all i wanted to do wash bash around on the drms, but once i actuaklly started studying the drums, and i realized how bad my playing was for my wrists, immediately changed it up and got better at drumming in the process
i think everybody goes through a stage of realisation of their bad technique after a year or 2. i did. i played with my stick so far up my forefinger and was shocked when i realised how much better holding the stick further down the forefinger is. not to mentin the middle finger fulcrum and using the fingers. i dont play metal though, just jazz, fusion or maybe rock if i must
no kidding! you're so right about that! i'm a mike portnoy junkie, and unfortunately, because of me playing his music, i have tendentious. i got to dave too late! :(
I have never heard of a metal drummer getting carpel tunnel, it's just a stupid stereotype made by idiots who can't play with as much talent as metal drummers.
@KeysUpOnTheTable there is no talent or musical ability required to play metal. don't get me wrong, it's a bitch of a workout and takes a lot of practice to get up the speed and power at the same time, but as well at technique being VITAL -find an athletic profession that DOESN'T require good technique to prevent injury- anyone can do it. you need to be an artist, not a sportsman, to be able to understand the likes of dave.
@Blacklorigine i wasn't referring to musical ability i was referring to technique. metal drumming requires very little technical ability but the majority still choose to neglect it because they think it's like a sport- entirely based on speed and agility. and second of all if metal drummers are so great then why do people pay DAVE five figures for a recording session and six for a tour rather than getting a drummer to bear the risk of commission? because to professionals, HE'S the investment.
@Blacklorigine i just wonder if metal drummers realise how absolutely ridiculous it is that they seem to not even know that double strokes exist, let alone not use them. if it's such a stereotype that metal drummers get unjuries then why are all these people commenting back about their injuries due to their metal drumming idols? now if you'll excuse me i have to get ready for a performance with the top band at my school, for which in a 15 minute set around 5 has been given to me for open soloing
it depends on the band and the drummer ... im assuming you've just seen the 10 trillion vids on here talking about blastbeats and playing double bass at the speed of light etc... there are some that stand out .. bobby jarzombek, aquiles priester, gene hoglan, richard christy, derek roddy, george kollias .. it depends what their other influences are.
also .. i think some jazz snobs should shut up for long enough to check out some various high profile metal drummers ... just as much as death metal snobs should check out some jazz and funk ... 1 minute i'll be listening to nile .. the next minute .. tower of power .. then slayer, then dave weckl ... everything requires talent except pop
@shadowlorde stop bragging about how much you listen to and don't call me a jazz snob. i was listening to dream theater and gnr all day yesterday. nothing you've said changes my point that metal drummers waste energy when they don't use doubles in their simple but fast fills on the snare and toms. and what's wrong with pop? michael jackson was a hell of a singer.
somebody poured a bag of crabs down their shorts ..... i was just trying to make a point that not all metal drummers are talentless and ... fast is fast .. doubles, singles or paradiddles... does singles vs doubles even really matter? ,,, anyway .. on a drumming video .. in a conversation about drummers .. wtf does michael jackson's singing matter ... i'll agree .. he was great .. but his drummers .. LAME..
@samm1809 don't say all. i know plenty that actually use good technique (and their music is better). haha but you're right, most have no technique and will DESTROY their wrist
@vtmike13 yeah the pros like joey and mike ahve good technique, but i still never see them use doubles for their fills, which i don't see why i wouldn't if i were to pla metal.
So it is exercise two (starting from 7:48 on video) where you flip the stick back. Think of playing half notes in slow tempo for example, you don't want to keep the stick up there ready for strike for long times. This would apply on backbeat in rock music (for example again). The next is exercise three, where you are playing continous strokes. Eigth notes to hihat in rock beat, for example. Now you don't want to flip stick back, because you would have to rise it up for strike immetiatly.
hahaha wow thats really weird, maybe is because i dont know that many people to find a completely sportless guy among them. Still sounds funny if you ever.... hahaha.
i m not quite sure wif his grip...he only shows us how to hold the drumstick but didnt shows us which part to hold the drumstick, bcos it is very important as well for natural bouncing...good vid anyway but i prefer wif my way..lol
I get a kick out of the pad sound hes getting. Theres an effect going on there and its making a thhhhhwack sound. If you listen closely it sounds like a reverse gate or something. (i'm no sound engineer)
Doesnt it seem like drumming has changed since the 60's? After the 70s what the hekc happened?!?! When did this modern style become ingraned in our technique? No one drums like they did in the 70s!! The fills are different, everthing!!!
every drum clip i visit on YouTube, someone's talking about wether Neil Peart is better or worse than the drummer. Neil has never spent the ammount of time in his life that guy's like ,Minniman or Lang have done to be drum masters. Instead he worked on both drumming, and song craft. Neils drum fills, although intermediate compared to the two above drummers could do, will live forever because it's within a song crafted so well.
maybe u should learn how to read! I never said he COULDN'T play other genres. I said he is just good at his own genre. He isn't as good in other genres douche! FYI I love Rush so don't talk shit!
Congrats you just won a youtube argument by changing the subject! I hate stupid drummers that think they know everything! You have no clue about my skill level or where i have played! I guarantee you are just some stupid drummer that plays along with Neil Peart all day and can't read music. Please tell me when you have opened for the Playboy Jazz Festival, played for the Monterey Jazz Festival, and played in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
NO u r the one that wanted this confrontation! I just was saying how i liked Neil Peart, but he is only good in his genre of music! YOU are the one that wanted to bring this to a whole other level!
This is the best video I have ever seen...I've been using it for about 3 months and I'm twice as good as I used to be. Thank you so much for introducing me to The Dave.
I reaaaally am having a problem with where you hold your thumb. It is really difficult, where do you keep your thumb when the stick rebounds? Do you keep it on top of the stick? Anyone can explain it to me? Thanks!
Just play, and try not to worry about these little things. Just keep your thumb on the stick. Focus on making music and using your hands and feet to do this. As Dave said, it's natural. There's a natural way, and a forced way. It sounds to me like you want to force it somehow. Just pick the stick up, bounce it on a drum or pad and observe what your hand naturally wants to do.
Oh, and one important thing: the stronger your hands and wrists, and feet and ankles are, the easier drumming is.
This is brilliant, my control got better literally as soon as I tried his middle finger grip. I've always kind of been doing it, but my teacher told me that the forefinger was where the grip should be, so my bounces were choked. By just shifting the grip slightly onto the mid finger my bounces are way freer!
When they say you play "backwards" they probably mean that you play in a backbeat (dunno if that's the correct term in english) basicly, it means that you play the first snare stroke where the first bass drum stroke should be, like you switched the position of the bass drum and snare....really bad explanation but it's the best I can do. :P

Its OK, you're entitled to make mistakes. Brush up on history, learn more about what you want to talk about.
Traditional grip is nothing more than the name suggest, it's traditional to drum set, that's it.
Traditional grip is not superior, or players would use it in both hands, like traditional drum corps players did.

Natural is matched grip, traditional is a perversion. If traditional grip was superior, mallet, timpani, steel drum etc. would all use it.
Marching, traditional grip was adapted to facilitate striking a drum slung to ones side while standing, not a drum in front while sitting.

every drum clip i visit on YouTube, someone's talking about wether Neil Peart is better or worse than the drummer. Neil has never spent the ammount of time in his life that guy's like ,Minniman or Lang have done to be drum masters. Instead he worked on both drumming, and song craft. Neils drum fills, although intermediate compared to the two above drummers could do, will live forever because it's within a song crafted so well.

WECKL is one of the best ever - alongside Colaiuta even, I think. Tecnically he leaves them all in the dust, anyway - so YES He can also play -)

BCDPRODUCTIONS1234 3 years ago
Congrats you just won a youtube argument by changing the subject! I hate stupid drummers that think they know everything! You have no clue about my skill level or where i have played! I guarantee you are just some stupid drummer that plays along with Neil Peart all day and can't read music. Please tell me when you have opened for the Playboy Jazz Festival, played for the Monterey Jazz Festival, and played in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Dabombmh1990 3 years ago
You are an asshole, Why do you have to criticize my opinion?
FYI i can read music im doing my GCSE's in music
Plus i have a larger music collection than just rush and why do you talk as if you're so special?
Egomaniac much?
BCDPRODUCTIONS1234 3 years ago
NO u r the one that wanted this confrontation! I just was saying how i liked Neil Peart, but he is only good in his genre of music! YOU are the one that wanted to bring this to a whole other level!
Dabombmh1990 3 years ago
Ha you didnt mention how you liked neil peart it looked like you were insulting him and youre the one who started with the insults
BCDPRODUCTIONS1234 3 years ago
I said he plays he genre well but can't play other genres as well! That is def not talking down to him. I also said i liked Rush!

I reaaaally am having a problem with where you hold your thumb. It is really difficult, where do you keep your thumb when the stick rebounds? Do you keep it on top of the stick? Anyone can explain it to me? Thanks!
majortombelgium 3 years ago
Just play, and try not to worry about these little things. Just keep your thumb on the stick. Focus on making music and using your hands and feet to do this. As Dave said, it's natural. There's a natural way, and a forced way. It sounds to me like you want to force it somehow. Just pick the stick up, bounce it on a drum or pad and observe what your hand naturally wants to do.
Oh, and one important thing: the stronger your hands and wrists, and feet and ankles are, the easier drumming is.

looks more like homo position!

such a usefull video has helped my technique form just one watch middle finger grip is so much better.
iloveklb 4 years ago
This is brilliant, my control got better literally as soon as I tried his middle finger grip. I've always kind of been doing it, but my teacher told me that the forefinger was where the grip should be, so my bounces were choked. By just shifting the grip slightly onto the mid finger my bounces are way freer!
ikickpuppys 4 years ago
So in the begining he actually says that french grip is not good for your wrists?

Drumhead13th 4 years ago 3
Everyone tells me that I drum "backwards". Is that possible? See my video "Drumming with Big Sugar"
dumfree254 5 years ago
When they say you play "backwards" they probably mean that you play in a backbeat (dunno if that's the correct term in english) basicly, it means that you play the first snare stroke where the first bass drum stroke should be, like you switched the position of the bass drum and snare....really bad explanation but it's the best I can do. :P
