Yes, the music is certainly fitting and helps create the atmosphere. What I find bizarre in all of this is how the men seemed so preoccupied with this one penguin and yet unconcerned by the barbaric deaths they had just inflicted on the whales. Perhaps, this is a matter of perception. That one creates two boxes in one's mind. One in which the person objectifies and the other in which he or she subjectifies.
I do like this track within the context of Valley of The Giants self titled debut album. On its own it seems incredibly random, but amidst the shifting sound-scapes which perfectly capture the heart of America, it's excellent post-rock. But then do you expect any less from a super group which includes members from Godspeed You Black Emperor among others...

or blinded by the harshness of their job? they view whales as something they kill daily.. a penguin is a different (and maybe rare) case.
