Journey to the Bus in June

I can't imagine tax payers dollars going towards an old bus where a disconnected member of society spent his last days. I also can't see why a hunter would want to blast a window out (the shelter could help out someone lost or caught in a storm). I guess the symbolism that the book or the movie created determines your perception of how you feel about this old bus. I think it would be kind of spooky sleeping in it.

I wrote a letter to governor palin seeing what can be done about bus 142. seeing how it has become a part of modern alaskan history, i suggested setting up a bus 142 preservation society that through public donation would fix it up a bit and replace windows and protect it by law. if it keeps getting trashed or things being sold on e-bay then maybe move bus 142 to a local museum and recreate the scene there. i hate to see it damaged further and it's very disrespectful to the McCandless family.

Why bother, because of McCandless the bus has become a monument to stupidity. Regardless of how much people try to romanticize it into something noble. It's not. Better off to just let it rust and fade away.

ok update. according to my research from a letter from a state ranger, bus 142 has been officially abandoned and thus become state property. so the bus is indeed protected by law from damage and theft. anybody doing so is breaking state law. that guy off e-bay did in fact commit a crime but to his knowledge there has not been any pursuit of charges. from what i understand, the guy off e-bay was just trying to make a statement anyway, not make serious money off it i guess....

bus 142 preservation society? Have you suffered a severe head injury lately? sure! How about the state posts a few gaurds out there too, maybe a snack bar and souvenier stand, at the taxpayers expense of course, and start charging people to see it.

If we start "preserving" every card board box some hobo dies in - because all families who lose a loved one desverve respect - we'd be up to our asses in cardboard monuments. Get a grip, it's an old piece of crap bus.
