Profound words steeped in history....Let us not forget those gone before us who paid dearly in their struggle for the rights of man...Let us honour their memory, their deeds, and likewise as in THEIR struggle do the best WE can. Regards from the Teddy Bears head..
@bilstew there are so many social reformers of these isles forgotten - radicals and renegades and yet most of TV has dramas about the eltist aristocracy, makes me sad !
@Apemanwithcalculator ....Most definitely agree and I'm trying to think of that old bushy bearded and much castigated Jewish philosopher from Germany who said in so many words "However, the difficult bit is in trying to change such things"
@nipplebrady1988 fuck anthrax,,,, i say we sew her ass hole closed and force feed her KFC till that whore explodes he he he then burn her in a car and piss on the ashes,,,, then we we have a song and dance to the sound of luke kelly, then when we are in jail we can get married.
Many thanks to Kellyoneill for putting a lot of great songs of Luke Kelly and The Dubliners .i'm totally not Irish (i'm from Flanders) but still i love these strong and beautiful songs. It's sad Luke had to go so quickly.
Why was a harpsichord used and who was playing it? I dont know of it being used before with Luke. I'd like to think it was Seán Ó Riada, but that would be too much to ask for!
The harpsichord is played by Phil Coulter, who was producing The Dubliners at the time. Coulter tried to introduce some new sounds to The Dubs music..piano, bass, harpsichord etc, a move which Luke apparently embraced wholeheartedly.
The first time I heard this song I was listening to radio, locked in a cell in Portlaoise Jail, which is a short while up the road from the eponymous Cluain Meala.
It was a hot summer evening and I could see, from my window, part of the normal life of the town going on around me.
I was a fan of the Dubliners and Luke long before that but the circumstances of my first hearing of the song brought home to me the continuing relevance of songs born out of struggle.
@nipplebrady1988 In his last vids and pics Luke Kelly is very young, from my point of view. He was only 43 years old when he died. He does look pale and ill, but only looks middle aged to me, which he was, barely.
that is a practical yet brilliant idea. listening to the radio is a balls these days. it would be great to know that you could move up the dial to hear some great irish folk tunes. larrcake for president.lol
bang on larrycake, drives me mad listening to radio stations of ireland playing all the crap music thats out there today when the least they could do is throw a few trads songs on. Ian Dempsey on fridays lets people ring in and choose songs that they would like to hear, wonder if i rang on and asked for this song what response would i get back?
@damodamodamo2 At the minute it's not to be got anywhere, The British Library Archives had a copy so I emailed them but they couldnt give me a copy because of copyright issues, Don't know what happened but they dont seem to have it anymore.
I feel the exact same as u. I hav radio on all day at work listenin to fukn pussycatdolls and sugababes. I hav never heard luke bein played. they wont even play rebel songs cos theyl offend the fukn english over here.
Man that's a shame..there's a lot to be learned from the Trad. songs..at least that shite there playing now will be forgotten in a few weeks and real Irish music will always be around.
@Zurzi i know ur comment is an old comment! but 1 night at work it was my birthday and the lads rang spin fm to request a song! i asked them to play luke kelly dublin in the rare old times! they just hung up! cheek of them! check of da lads to think id even listen to dat station
I think i would have to agree with you Kelly Shoals of herring was Lukes best followed closely by Scorn not his simplicity but then as you say they were all great. How come 'Shoals of Herring' by Luke is so hard to get on CD or vinyl?
Deadly stuff, as we used to say in Dublin, beautifully sung - Colmkil - as to the author - it's a translation into English of a song in Gaelic 'Príosún Chluain Meala' which dates from the latter part of the 18th century. The song appears to be written from the point of view of a fella in Clonmel jail (in Co. Tipperary) who is on the eve of being hanged for involvement in one of the agrarian gangs (generally anti-landlord) of the time - as the 'Whiteboys'
If I was really pressed to choose a Luke favourite, I think this could be it. His voice was at It's sweetest here. God bless you Luke... and kellyoneill :)
Hey, I love all you have - what a great collection, the best. Could I get a copy of your library of the dubliners and luke?

From the photo of Luke as a young rake, and in the short time before he passed at the age of 43 - he attained immortality in the folk world.

THE state has spent more than €6.8m in the past 5 yrs on flights to send failed asylum-seekers back to their countries.
6,000 people are now classified as 'evading deportation' with only a quarter of all orders actually ever implemented.
In the past 6 yrs, justice ministers have signed close to 8,500 deportation orders fewer than 2,500 of these have ended in repatriation.
