  • Hey, I love all you have - what a great collection, the best. Could I get a copy of your library of the dubliners and luke?

  • From the photo of Luke as a young rake, and in the short time before he passed at the age of 43 - he attained immortality in the folk world.

  • Heart rending,

  • Profound words steeped in history....Let us not forget those gone before us who paid dearly in their struggle for the rights of man...Let us honour their memory, their deeds, and likewise as in THEIR struggle do the best WE can. Regards from the Teddy Bears head..

  • @bilstew there are so many social reformers of these isles forgotten - radicals and renegades and yet most of TV has dramas about the eltist aristocracy, makes me sad !

  • @Apemanwithcalculator ....Most definitely agree and I'm trying to think of that old bushy bearded and much castigated Jewish philosopher from Germany who said in so many words "However, the difficult bit is in trying to change such things"

  • i know for a fact luke is charmeing them all in havan with his great voice the best singer this country ever had may god be good to him

  • Is this about the Young Irelander rebellion and the treason trial at Clonmel (Cluain Meala)?

  • i listen to this and then all i want to do is send lady gaga anthrax via air mail.

  • @MrPeteofile you find some anthrax ile find a adress

  • @nipplebrady1988 fuck anthrax,,,, i say we sew her ass hole closed and force feed her KFC till that whore explodes he he he then burn her in a car and piss on the ashes,,,, then we we have a song and dance to the sound of luke kelly, then when we are in jail we can get married.

  • @MrPeteofile hmm interesting reply lol

  • best Kelly song ever!

  • pure legand

    we miss you luke

  • Many thanks to Kellyoneill for putting a lot of great songs of Luke Kelly and The Dubliners .i'm totally not Irish (i'm from Flanders) but still i love these strong and beautiful songs. It's sad Luke had to go so quickly.

  • Do you know how old this song is?

  • nice . nice one

  • No offence but who did you expect?

  • A by Clonmel.

  • Kelly O'Neill you do indeed rock!

  • absofuckinglutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is aoibhinn liom sireacht an amhràin seo - cuireann an cruitchlàr go mor leis sin, cuireann sè blas aimsir na bpèindlithe air. go raibh maith agat

  • Great Tune ;-)

  • It may be that the strings that capture Ireland's soul? I suppose it is a matter of preference. Your call .........

  • Why was a harpsichord used and who was playing it? I dont know of it being used before with Luke. I'd like to think it was Seán Ó Riada, but that would be too much to ask for!

  • The harpsichord is played by Phil Coulter, who was producing The Dubliners at the time. Coulter tried to introduce some new sounds to The Dubs music..piano, bass, harpsichord etc, a move which Luke apparently embraced wholeheartedly.

  • ok Phil coulter yes, thanks for answering my questions!

  • zz top?? Its Luke Kelly!?!?!

  • The first time I heard this song I was listening to radio, locked in a cell in Portlaoise Jail, which is a short while up the road from the eponymous Cluain Meala.

It was a hot summer evening and I could see, from my window, part of the normal life of the town going on around me.

I was a fan of the Dubliners and Luke long before that but the circumstances of my first hearing of the song brought home to me the continuing relevance of songs born out of struggle.

  • @TheODubhthaigh theres a great one on revoloution called ojis negros!

  • Interesting, where do the deportees come from?

  • Africa.....Nigeria, Ghana are some of the African countries

  • Vietnam, Loas, and Cambodia.

  • dont know what you are on about

  • It's World wide ............

  • What state?

  • That would be Luke Kelly.

  • Do you know how old he is there?

  • 20-ish

  • @kellyoneill quite a strapping young fellow eh! wouldent have wanted a smack off a him. its a real shame to se him old in his last vids and pics

    god rest the great man

  • @nipplebrady1988 In his last vids and pics Luke Kelly is very young, from my point of view. He was only 43 years old when he died. He does look pale and ill, but only looks middle aged to me, which he was, barely.

God keep you, Luke Kelly. Rest easy now.

  • Luke Kelly died on 1/30/84. He is truly missed as are the rest of the Dubliners. Thank Christ that we still have their music.

  • ohhhhh! I had no idea, thanks for pointing that out, I thought he was an inmate from the jail! ha ha.

  • This song makes me happy and sad at once.

  • that is a practical yet brilliant idea. listening to the radio is a balls these days. it would be great to know that you could move up the dial to hear some great irish folk tunes. larrcake for president.lol

  • Lads - there is one! R na G for your language and culture! Ceol agus caint gach la! Adh mor. Is brea liomse Luke go foill..

  • bang on larrycake, drives me mad listening to radio stations of ireland playing all the crap music thats out there today when the least they could do is throw a few trads songs on. Ian Dempsey on fridays lets people ring in and choose songs that they would like to hear, wonder if i rang on and asked for this song what response would i get back?

  • Better still, Request Luke singing The Deserter :)

  • @kellyoneill Luke Kelly The Deserter....Ye wouldnt know where i would find that would ye? cant find it on here :)

  • @damodamodamo2 At the minute it's not to be got anywhere, The British Library Archives had a copy so I emailed them but they couldnt give me a copy because of copyright issues, Don't know what happened but they dont seem to have it anymore.

  • I feel the exact same as u. I hav radio on all day at work listenin to fukn pussycatdolls and sugababes. I hav never heard luke bein played. they wont even play rebel songs cos theyl offend the fukn english over here.

  • Man that's a shame..there's a lot to be learned from the Trad. songs..at least that shite there playing now will be forgotten in a few weeks and real Irish music will always be around.

  • @Zurzi i know ur comment is an old comment! but 1 night at work it was my birthday and the lads rang spin fm to request a song! i asked them to play luke kelly dublin in the rare old times! they just hung up! cheek of them! check of da lads to think id even listen to dat station

  • They all grew beards so that it would make it easy for bookers to remember them -"That band with all the beards".

  • I love this song. Luke looks so young in that pic... What album is this one from?

  • Ahhhh thats hilarious. Well done.

  • Why d'you think he grew a beard!

  • originally released on the dubliners 1973 album "plain & simple" produced by phil coulter, that's phil on the harpsichord.

  • Bought it then, still in my collection.

    Seen them live too. Brilliant.

  • absolutely brilliant

  • Aye an irishman showing the Scots how a song should be sung-hamish henderson will be turning in his grave!

  • that he will be :)

i love all of lukes scottish songs they are amazing. his grandmother was scottish.

  • I think i would have to agree with you Kelly Shoals of herring was Lukes best followed closely by Scorn not his simplicity but then as you say they were all great. How come 'Shoals of Herring' by Luke is so hard to get on CD or vinyl?

  • its on a 3 cd box set called Whiskey In The Jar,

i think after shoals of herring it would have to be Freedom Come All Ye, ya tried that one yet?

  • Perfectly sung. Impossible to beat Luke's version of this song. Beautiful. Born to sing.

  • Deadly stuff, as we used to say in Dublin, beautifully sung - Colmkil - as to the author - it's a translation into English of a song in Gaelic 'Príosún Chluain Meala' which dates from the latter part of the 18th century. The song appears to be written from the point of view of a fella in Clonmel jail (in Co. Tipperary) who is on the eve of being hanged for involvement in one of the agrarian gangs (generally anti-landlord) of the time - as the 'Whiteboys'

  • Awesome, first time I've ever heard this song. Anyone know who this song is about and who wrote it?

  • Voice pure and true - LONG LIVE LUKE!!!!

  • If I was really pressed to choose a Luke favourite, I think this could be it. His voice was at It's sweetest here. God bless you Luke... and kellyoneill :)

  • :) thanks, if pushed to name a fave song of lukes, i think it would have to be shoals of herring. his voice is amazing in that song.

  • great job there kellyoneill, love this song

  • Superb!! One of his best.

What is the instrument accompanying him.

    Sounds like a harpsichord.

    Martin

  • the best of,

  • What can I say, but thankyou again kelly for this wonderful song.

  • My Pleasure!

  • how old was he in this pic anyone know?

  • lol wow ya askin something there!

    20-ish

  • Probably my favourite Luke Kelly song :0)
