I had an '88 Excel -- 12 years and 160,000 miles later, it was still running pretty well. As for "since when is fwd a good thing..." one word: snow. Best winter car ever.
BMW should remake this video and it should say, "24 years later the man on the left still drives this car while the man on the right is on his 5th Hyundai."
funny, the BMW E30 in this commercial is one of the best, most reliable cars ever made. There are far more of them still around now than the piece of shit 87 Excel, you can bet on it.
the other difference is, you will have a POINTS IGNITION SYSTEM YET, your excel will rot to shit in no time flat, you will have a POINTS IGNITION SYSTEM YET, a P.O.S. for a carburetor, a POINTS IGNITION SYSTEM YET, it will handle like garbage, you will have a POINTS IGNITION SYSTEM YET!!!, and you will most certainly be killed to death in the event of a collision... did i mention they used points ignitions on these....? funny for a car with the name, the Excel...
I'll admit Hyundai makes a great car these days, but back then, there was a reason it was 5 grand. My brother had one in medical school back in the early 90s and the damn thing couldn't drive on the interstate with the air conditioning on.
Hyundai had European styling and FWD WOW. To be honest when i was a kid I never or rarely saw one of these shitboxes on the road. Bmw's for damn sure till this day the E30 is a great driver.
They were plagued with fit and finish and especially transmission ills. In 1990: they got way better. In 1995: They became very good cars. My friend had a 99 Accent with over 220k miles, base model, no options.... just sold it last week for $700. Still runs very well just had a cracked dash. The seats and carpet were in fine condition too. Body, everything is in nice shape. Wish they go the mileage of an old Geo metro, though. Some see too get close to that in the late 90's.
FWD makes sense if you live in a cold weather climate. I've had the opportunity to drive both FWD and RWD cars in snow and, worse yet, freezing rain. FWD has ALOT more control in those conditions than RWD
@luso2kx That may be true but almost all FWD cars don't have LSD when many bmw's did 2 moving wheels are better than one if traction is needed. Most RWD cars with LSD and dedicated winter tires can be better than FWD cars in these weather conditions. In the end we know RWD makes a car feel a whole lot better to drive and FWD is for people who don't know how to drive and they are cheaper too so buy what suits you? Weak. Since the mid 90's cars changed I hate it. RWD luxury cars kept RWD alive.
"The man on the right has all that, too, PLUS front wheel drive!" I would certainly not be marketing that as a plus. Front wheel drive takes all the character away from a car.
@thatBMWkid For an enthusiast yes, but for 98% of the population they don't care or know if the car is RWD or FWD. They just follow what is marketed to them, FWD is better. In some circumstances it is. But for someone who loves cars no. There are some good FWD performance cars but ultimately RWD is where its at.
@jakesaintsrow123 Yeah, FORD tried the same thing comparing the Ford Granada with a 450 SL. It didn't fly in the 70's - 80's or now for that matter. LOL
@TheLizardKing1967 Yea Haha ..Ford Though they could compare a Crapnada to a Benz Just because they stuck a Little Badge On the side stateing it was An ESS Model LOL :D
One big difference between these two cars, is that the man on the left has a car thats a pussy magnet while the driver on the right has to pay 2 times: 1. for convincing a hooker to sit in his car and hope she's not embarrassed to even walk to his car and 2. to have sex with him.
They advertised this car like they actually thought it would be dependable. Seriously, they thought that a 1988 Hyundai could compete with a way nicer BMW? They were out of their minds.
"But one big difference between these two cars is that the man on the left is still paying for his."
That's not a very good point, because, more than likely after a few months to a year, the man on the right is going to have to spend money to fix or replace his.
@mariofreak91 thats so true my 318 has 375,000 miles.i got it with 120,000 in 1996 as a graduation gift my neighboor bought his excel brand new the same year.that car is rotting under a tree on the side of his house.and the beemer doesnt even burn oil. hyundai seems make good stuff now go figure
@mariofreak91 I'm not going to say anything bad about BMW's because they're great cars; however, I do own a Hyundai and have had no problems with it. They've come a long way.
@mariofreak91 I never even knew that (about the dashboard), but I just think the Accent is too small even for a single person - not enough metal wrapped around you.
@ItsssMatiiinnn I think most of us know the Excel as a Pony (quite appropriate...Ponies are slow and boring!) Pile if crap no mattter what it is called. One good thing about the excel was the motor.....made by Mitsubishi. At least you know the motor would be around 7 years later. The body and rest....well that was probably another story.
They said FWD,like it's a good thing or something... LAME. RWD is one of the good points about the BMW. The sad part is after all these years, the BMW is prolly still running and the Excel has prolly long gone to the junkyard. LOL
"They said FWD,like it's a good thing or something... LAME."
