  • Isnt this detrimental to your swing by allowing different motor pathways ( ones that you DO NOT use during your swing ) to develop? In other words, your training muscles and pathways that you dont normally use during your swing. No? Its the same reason swinging with a weighted bat actually slows your bat speed down

  • Baseball Hitting Power with MLB's Skip Schumaker...a guy that averages 5 Home Runs a year.

  • That is a really good training drill.

  • Oh my god! No wonder this guy hits the ball so hard

  • what if he missed the tire? hahahah

  • My girl friend was doing this practice every day.

  • I believe this will ruin your mechanics. It will help with building a hitter's strength but the foundation of the feet/legs will be off. It may do more damage than good.

  • Additionally, we do perform this exercise on both sides to try to maintain balance. Remember that all training methods whether it be strength, plyometrics, rope waves and tire flips, resisted or assisted movement drills, etc. have a place and benefits if incorporated properly for the right reasons for the right athlete, even if they are not completely sport/technique specific. It's how and when they are utilized that's important.

  • If all we did was use the sledgehammer everyday, and didn't include other high velocity rotational training exercises such that we do with the medicine balls, and if Skip didn't go to the field and hit almost 4-5 days/week that he does, then yes, using the sledgehammer alone may potentially have a negative impact on Skip's swing speed. "Train so to be slow" is a concept I am aware of, but I also know how to structure the complete training program so that drills like this enhance, not diminish.

  • In this video skip uses tht sledge bc it is heavy and makes u stronger. if u watch sports science it talks about using a heavy object and it says it will train ur muscles to swing slower. Is sport science correct or does using a heavy sleadge or weighted bat help develope batspeed and power?

  • @NJBaseball24 Not only is sports science correct but if skip does not swing right handed equally as many times the muscles he uses to swing lefty will become stronger than his righty muscles and he will become unbalanced and thus lose more functionality
