  • please get the drum track for this song! i want download it as mp3 so i can put it into a program and put my guitars over it

  • whats with the god awful tone on all these "bass only' videos? almost had me wondering if it was fake (pretty sure it isnt). but damn, no wonder the bass was so low in the mix, theres no low end balls and it sounds like its being being played through an overdriven 10w guitar amp

  • @VBshredder That's kind of how the entire sound on the Justice album is. If you can find isolated drum stems from these songs, they sounds REALLY flat and have very little depth to them. There's just very little depth to any of the instruments on the album. It really was poorly produced-- Metallica themselves even admit to this. I'd be curious to see what somebody could come up with if they messed around with the individual stems and livened up their sound a little.

  • @VBshredder

    Venom! :D

    Bulldozer Bass!

  • @jeleopard LOL yup, im starting to notice there is distortion on bass with bands that i had no clue the distortion was there in the past

  • @VBshredder

Cronos' sound is different. It IS a bass amp plugged into distortion pedals and a guitar amp. XD

  • this sounds so awesome, Jason is such an underrated bassist. Not as good as Cliff Burton imo, but Jason Newsted still has a lot of talent.

  • i like jasons hair styles lol

  • what?

there was bass on and justice for all?

  • @lazer59882 after the recording was done, lars and james i think, told the moxers to mix the bass track very low

  • @oyhe94 i know dude it was a joke

  • I hate Newsted for leaving, but now he have Flamenco Trujillo ^_^

  • jason was the best bassist metallica ever had because he had energy, great bass player, and most important of all....HE HAD VOCALS FROM HELL....a freak'n BEAST on backing vocals...he made metallica sound great live, they are missing those backing vocals now a days....ex, creeping death 89, in seatle.

  • @bukofjob Cliffy B. is still better.

  • @blacksabbathfan007 cliffy b lol

  • @blacksabbathfan007 you only say that because he died!

  • @atlimarcher No, I say that he is better is because his style, skill and pure aura influenced me to learn how to play the bass, yes, Jason is a power-bomb of a person, but does not compare to such a bass player as Clifford.

  • @atlimarcher quit using that shitty stereotype

  • @bloodmerc620 I agree.

  • Metallica have admitted the mistake in mixing the bass as low as they did, but it also seems kind of unprofessional to re-release an album, especially now, after 22 years. But I do agree. Bass is way too low on the album.

  • JASON FUCKING ROCKS!

  • this video is a hoax! there is no bass on this album! stop thinking metallica turned the bass down, theres no bass period!

  • @snoopwoggywogg you fail at life the bass is just mixed really too low. I still know that the bass is there because I hear it in harvester of sorrow

  • i agree he was a very good bassist and he wrote one of the best songs for metallica

  • Say whatever you want cliff actualy composed half of Justice for all.... and the 3 Metallica clasics CLIF 8======D O: DAVE MUSTIN!!!!!

  • This is actually the first time I've ever even heard bass on this album. You must have had to dig it out with a microscope and tweezers

  • worse... because hes playing with a pick ... :(

  • Jason is better because he always stays in Rythm and thats why the song always is in perfect tempo when they played with him.

  • i thing me second favorite bass player is this guy , but fuking metallica they don't used his talent and he is agreat singer better than james if metallica didn't made the load, reload ,st anger and blakc album too slow and they used jason talen, they were still the kings

  • He sings better than James?Man,get some new ears.

  • how could that not have been in the mix on and justice for all??? his bass tone is fuckin heavy!

  • It was a prank played on Jason by James and Lars.

  • Yeah, of course Cliff was far from the best players out there, he's not a John Entwistle, but hey, he was still fucking awesome :) And don't forget the fact that he died at the age of 24, so he was still far from his prime. Imagine what would had become of him after fracticing for 23 years more.

Arguing about who's the best is pointless anyway. Guess he'd just laugh at the stupid fanboyism...

  • he would have been the best, rob trujillo, do to the fact that he has lived far much longer, has let him surpass cliff, but he would have been better, had he lived

  • kirk sux more now than 23 years ago

  • I agree whole heartedly. Cliff is NOT the best. He's good, but not the best.

  • hes the best in that guys opinion, like how i love cliff, but still think geezer butler is the best

  • it would be great if one day, jason and the rest of metallica could just get over their personal differences and did one last show together. Creeping Death may be Cliff's song, but it's just not the same anymore without Jason's backing vox.

DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE MOTHER FUCKER DIE!!!!

  • fuck yeah!

  • lol kill em ALL , ...and justice for ALL. what do they want?

  • @krollaostmedburger

kill half and give the other half justice?

  • NMC3190: wow, dude. I LOVE Cliff - but its a pretty heavy statement to say ANYONE is "the greatest whomever lived" no matter what you are talking about. He was amazing, YES. A huge influence for me! But since you havent heard every bassist that ever lived- that is a crap statement to me. :)

  • Jason in the shadow of cliff is going through you fucking brains... Jason is NOT Cliff. They are BOTH very good bassist.

  • Hey now I know what his bass work sounded like on that album, it's not bad at all. No offence, but a couple members all Metallica can be assholes about things. They don't like to give credit to certain members. Like you never hear them mention their first bass player. They never bring up the fact Dave Mustaine recorded songs on Kill Em All and they cut down volumn and response frequency on And Justice for All so you could not hear Jason Newsted on bass since he was new at the time.

  • Mustaine on KEA? I thought he only recorded No Life 'Til Leather......

  • Ron Mcgovney

  • Metallica has never had a bad bassist except Bob Cock and the very first one not Cliff. But I forgot the 1st guys name??

  • I love how hard he hits the strings

  • Great bassist and ro too , i don't know how to choose , but what about the bass solo of the 1song of "Kill'em all " ??? *.*

  • why everione say that he was worst metallica basist?? i like his plaing best, and his haircut rocks!!!

  • He is a fantastic bassist. In certain aspects, he's even better than Cliff thought some idiots will disagree with me because they are stupid

  • FUCK YOU

  • Yeah yeah yeah you're just another stupid fan who hasn't got an opinion. Everyone just goes 'Cliff is the best anyone who doesn't like him the best should die' and although Cliff is one of my favourite bassists, I hate the brainwashed fans

  • How can you say that Jason is better than Cliff? Cliff did a awesome job on Kill 'em All.

  • Bullshit, Jason was and still is an excellent bassist, but Cliff Burton is arguably the best bassist whoever lived!!

  • You're proving me right. The Metallica fandom is divided- half of them are like me, smart enough to realise Cliff wasn't the best bassist at everything. The other half are brainwashed slaves. Cliff wasn't much of a technical bassist he was a genius composer instead. Jason Newsted has WAY tighter playing than Cliff, but he's not as good a composer

  • Well now your getting into into a grey, subjective area, what makes an excellent musician? Is it just technical ability, which i agree jason wins. Or is it a combination of technical ability and writing ability, which i believe Cliff is better at overall!!

  • Of course Cliff wins over all but I'm sick of people going 'Duh rob and jason rock but because they aren't Cliff they are instantly not as good

  • i understand and that pisses me off too when people feel that way

  • @sukablianah2 its not that he was the worst bassist, people just hate him because he left

  • @sukablianah2

    He was the best!

  • @sukablianah2

Because everyone wants to be cool by saying Cliff was the best because he's dead. Sad but true, it always worked like that.

  • @sukablianah2 cause he is. didn't you listen to this video?

  • lol at 0:31 he looks like butthead

  • So true lol he's still awesome tho lol

  • lol

  • I hated that haircut

  • david ellefson is better

  • of course

  • WEll yea Ellefosn is a best, watch they vid of him playing holy wars by himself, only with a drummer.

    sick

  • What an awesome bass sound. Why the hell did they bury it in the original mix? Fools...

  • 0:32 hahaha

  • Jason's playing is very abrasive - which makes it stand out as bass rather than being a guitar enhancer. He may be sloppy playing - but it's freaking awesome.

  • Cliff wasn't exactly the cleanest player either.

  • in fact, Jason was a lot cleaner.

  • tr0o, everyone always cock worships the dead musicians.

  • jason isn't dead

  • You have probably never seen Metallica live with Jason.......

  • Agree totally, he owns so much live.

  • True, in live performances, Jason had a very strong presence as he was full of energy all the time... but when it comes to who's the better PLAYER, Rob owns.

  • yes rob owns.

  • by the way: theres actually no wrong note in it at all.

  • I saw Metallica with Jason in the mid 90s and he was da bomb on stage! A great attitude!

    Cheerz from Argentina!

  • fuck yeah!!!!

  • That's because it wasn't separated from a stereo mix-- not like you're thinking, at least. Rock Band has this song in 11 tracks (4 drums, 1 bass, 2 guitar, 2 vox, 2 bg) which are mixed down to stereo output in realtime. I recorded one xbox output which had all 11 tracks in the mix (preview mode). Then, I played through the song on bass but without playing any notes, effectively muting the bass track, and creating a bass-free output. Therefore, the separation track has ONLY bass.

  • @adimifus you just fucking told that fagit.

  • Reading the description, and knowing how Rock Band works, you would have been able to figure out exactly how I did this rather quickly. ESPECIALLY being an audio engineer ;)

  • and you call yourself an audio enginer.. ignorant...

  • @Proclivity1 OWNED

  • damn that was sloppy

  • You must be deaf. He has great, aggressive bass tone. What works well in a mix often sounds weird on its own. Just listen to the bass track of "Ride the Lightning." Sounds weird, but works very well in the mix.

  • ride the lighnting was cliff....

  • Exactly my point. Cliff's bass tone sounds very odd and clangy on its own. So does Jason's. But it works well in the mix.

  • well in kill em all Cliff has a tone that either has the tone knob down or the bass knob up so it goes well behind the guitar.

  • On "Kill 'em All" Cliff was using flatwound strings, which are a lot less bright sounding then roundwounds, which are more commonly used in metal and rock.

Also, the guitar tone on "Kill 'em All" is very different and much more thin than on "Ride the Lightning." On the latter, it was harder to cut through, so Cliff used roundwounds and turned up the gain.

  • i am a bass player of 9 years and one thing that i have understood after sometime of playing it and never liking my bass tone by myself is that unless i am soloing that it doesn't matter how my bass sounds standing alone because it's all about the band mix. and i don't know what the guy above is saying about it being sloppy?

  • in the info, it says bass mirrors guitar..but really the guitar mirrors the bass and adds things to it because the bass is the rythm along with the drums.

  • THATS TRUE, GOOD WORDS BRO

  • Whyd he leave?

  • no thats a bass with half note drop tuning i think :)

  • Nope. ...And Justice For All was in standard.

  • wtf man

  • i like jason....... i dont think hes a god but i have nothin agianst him .. i think hes pretty beast

  • you know nothing.

  • yea but it sounds baddass, and thts what counts

  • that's a brutal hard downpicked bass...jason was cool

  • yea i wish ...and justice for all would be remixed

  • Like this, maybe we'd change Metallica's Story, no?

  • that is the surviving bass track. extracted from rockband. you hear the vocals slightly. its sounds cruddy because 1 its on tape. 2 its a direct recording no compression or anything because they did nothing with it on the original album. they probably didnt rerecord jasons parts from mistakes because they were not intending to use the stuff.

  • Actually, if you watch A year And A HAlf in The Life Of Metallica, they talk about how Jason picks so hard the mics will record it over the amp. They had to put foam around him so that you couldn't hear it on the black album, and you can hear it hardcore on this.

  • when i seen them live they was mint but i wish jason would come back

  • That part at the beginning could work as an intro to a song, it's nice and eerie.

  • you know what i dont think this is jason because this is from Rock Band.

and the drums, guitars (lead and rhythm) AND bass are all covered. thats why they sound different in all guitar hero games + rockband 1+2 because they're COVERED. so this is just some dude from redoctane or something that recorded this, thats why u can seperate the channels easier.

  • not all of the songs are covers, some songs are have the Master track. so far All Metallica songs in any Guitar Hero and Rock Band game are masters

  • All the main GH1 songs are covers, most of the GH2 main songs are covers (except for Stop, John the Fisherman and one other track that was only on the 360), most of the GH3 and RB songs are masters, all of the GHWT and RB2 songs are masters.

Besides which, the RB DLC credits page explicitly lists the Metallica Pack as all masters.

RedOctane didn't publish Rock Band anyhow, much less create music for it ;)

Doing a little research before commenting never hurts ;)

  • I have this one and AJFA, Battery, RTL etc guitar version, basss, voc and drums, they're easy to find.

  • yep, definitely sound like his attack...

    good vid dude

  • Yea that's Jason alright. This is funny cause I've never heard the bass on any ...And Justice for All Song before because of the way the album is mixed.

  • 0:52 how many knobs are on that bass?!

  • too many

  • eight:)

  • not sure but i think some of the things that look like knobs might be artwork on the bass....

  • i looked on the website and they're for controlling the usual bass, mid, treble, warmth, depth (i think) umm..and the rest are for controlling the LEDs on the neck

  • 41 seconds. what is with the side of his head? did he shave the sides of his head back then or something.

  • yup, he shaved them. it was just a hairstyle. xP

  • do more

  • Sounds like John Campbell from Lamb of God. But in this case.. John Campbell sounds like him.

  • good play, but on 0:33 he looks like beavis and butthead :). Metallica best in world

  • but can you do it while giving yourself whiplash? that is the question!

  • wow I see people have no sense of humor xD carry on with your blind fanaticism. Jason is a VERY good bass player, but please, dont get tooooooo fanatic :P

  • Metallica is going to Remaster Justice for All they posted it on their website like 2 weeks ago! Sort of what Megadeth did

  • do you have the link to the page?

  • obama won! :D

  • I love this tone, it sounds so great with the band also

  • uh... i mean -.. sounds good cept some parts of the distortion ...

  • i think it is just fret buzz and treble boost...

  • oki - well played - but the distortion on the bass is a bit too much,

  • i like this clanky, metal, chop.

  • Really not my style. All I hear is CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP, with only a mild tonal aftertaste.

Now, Cliff's style of composition and playing, that was lyric.

  • I kinda agree there man. Bass sounds so much better when its finger played. Still, this is kinda interesting to listen to.

  • I love him

  • Fuck Obama as well.

  • Ya Fuck Obama!

  • THIS IS THE PART OF THE SONG JASON WROTE

  • jsonbass is right, cliff wrote all of his bass lines and only got writing credits for the songs he contributed to, like for whom the bell tolls. btw cliff owns on that song.

  • Jason just follows the guitar for the most part as well so Its very unlikely that he would get any writing credits at all.... You don't even get credits for guitar solos its the main riff and structure as has been said below me

  • metallica did admit they turned down jason's bass for the justice album

  • too bad there is no bass on justice at all..haha

  • you can download and justice for jason, i did and its much better :D

  • man this bass is so dirty its awesome

  • I can hear the bass in the intro of ... and justice for all if i use my headphones. Give it a try, you might just be able to hear it.

  • lol if you have a set of Logitech z5500d's you can hear the bass lol

  • Sounds so damn sinister it's ridiculous.

  • I love Newsted's hard down strokes.

  • i can hear james in the background

  • read the info.

  • awsome i have a question did Jason right that clip?

  • its not fret buss its the pick

  • and some gain

  • haha

  • Jason wrote all of his bass lines himself. Writing credits do not include writing a bass line to a song, it only includes the creation of song structure. So when everyone says Jason didn't write his own lines, because he only has two writing credits with Metallica, that's false.

  • James did write some of them on justice.

  • From what James and Lars say, they wrote every guitar and bass part note for note. James said he would even stand over Kirk or Jason while they were recording, and if they played something other than what he wrote he would tell them "hey, I didn't write that note for you!" That's how much of a control freak he was back then.

  • does anybody know how to eliminate fret buzz?

  • try, try and try again, there's no foolproof way to get rid of it
