another steriotype is that all musilms/arabs wear turbins "Rags"
this is in fact wrong, if you go to many arab/muslim countries eg Lebanon people dont wear turbins "rags" on there heads, although some muslim countries do in fact wear them eg Afgahn people, and some Pakistanis
on another note: i love Aladin (being Arabic myself) its still one of the all time disney classics
i am an egyptian, so one person, when i was going back to egypt, asked my sister if we all live in the pyramids. imagine 70-80 million people crammed into the pyramids.
Thank you! This was my first exposure to Middle Eastern culture too, (granted I was 8 probably) and for the longest time, the time period or any fictional details didn't even register. I actually thought this was what is was like. The racial and gender stereotypes in Disney blow my mind.
I'm Arab, and I've liked this movie ever since I was a kid. haha Maybe because I'm Lebanese, and we don't even have a desert, much less camels, in Lebanon.
point in hand is a valid one, but where is the line drawn? disney of cause dont propgate the steroetype i think people expected in this response. but it is a stereotype none the less.
Good point... Aladdin's the equivalent of Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. There's traditional 'evil' characters, funny characters and noble characters in all these stories. There's a lot of things Disney has done wrong (tell me about it!), but I don't see how a funny man on a camel in a cartoon based on a folk tale has much relevance to real Arabs. I'd be scared to think anyone really thought the modern Arab world was anything LIKE Aladdin... though I admit it's a nicer prospect than some.
a stereotype, be it a good or bad one is still a stereotype, however i think it is impossible to erase steroetypes completely without also errasing cultures completely. which would be a sad thing indeed.
Point taken. Think for just a moment of the stereotypes arabs have about americans and other westerners. No, we don't all wear cowboy hats, own oil wells in Texas, have 25 guns, aren't athiests, and we damn sure aren't monkeys or pigs. We also love our kids, want peace, many of us believe in God, perhaps not the same way muslims do.. Oh yes, we are actually EDUCATED! No, we don't all believe in what our leaders do, but that is the purpose of a democratic republic, is it not? Pray for peace!
i see americans as a slowly decaying "race" due to infighting and supersized value meals. And to be completely honest, that s mostly from movies/literature. I wonder the steroetypes that people have about australians
Well, Picture Mad Max "throwing a shrimp on da barbie, mate" dressed in outback gear (ala Crocodile Dundee), fighting off the crocs and poisonous snakes, riding their 'roo off into the sunset, mate ;-)
but that's not the point. it's saying that this is the priliminary view od "arabia" american's get...and while it's not necessarily bad it's not good either

this is interesting ... but i think for an educated arab this is the other version of the stereotype which the west wants to see... if its not terrorists... its bellydancers and oversexed machist men all in the erotic of things... PLEAAASE! I have had east european girls tell me they wanting to become sex slaves just over that stereotype... i heard they flood arab countries that some even banned their entry...
I am an American and feel it is our duty as Americans to reach out to the Arabic Community to counteract the war this current administration has made.

I wish it was a stereotype mre2u2.

GOOD ONE, unitus. media certainly does a lot of harm to us by reinforcing as well as introducing stereotypes.
but on the other hand, cannot caricature be found in every culture-- poking fun at the extremes of any target group?

Alladin was based on culture of over 200 years ago, so how was it so mistaken? It just isn't current
