Jennsky...I really appreciate your time in posting this! It really takes me back. It really does seem like yesterday. I remember the first time I rode that, and was thrilled by the technology at the end of the ride.
I saw "World of Motion" as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" of EPCOT Center. Character & humor driven with Audio-Animatronics a la Marc Davis, & a catchy song by Baker & Atencio. It's a shame that so many wonderful AA's had to perish in the name of a "thrill ride."
Can't really put into words how inspiring the old story telling rides like this and Horizons were for me as a kid. They had a far more lasting impact on the mind and soul than the replacements. It's sad that modern Disney management doesn't seem to get Walt's vision and is straying so far from it.
... I'd venture a guess that it is customary that the replacenent attractions in Epcot are to be based on the same theme of the attraction it is replacing.
Despite all of Test Track's initial problems, I feel it is a kind of evolution of World of Motion. As WOM showed the evolution of transportation itself, TT let's visitors learn what goes into today's modern vehicle technology. To me it's the next chapter in the WOM story.
As far as Horizons. It was an exhibit that showed how communication and technology evolves and pushes human kind toward greater discoveries. I consider MISSION:SPACE the next step beyond what Horizons was conveying.
that was cool. i'm one who loves the innocence of the early disneyland attractions, and this looks like something walt himself would have signed off on. light entertainment and some educational value for the whole family. it's even more of a shame that this was closed since ward kimball passed away. this was one of the attractions he helped design for epcot.. thanks for preserving it on video.
From what I understand, Future World rides have a life span of however long their sponsorships are from a certain company. Their intention for each ride is a 15 or so year life-span. It could result in either a major overhaul of the attraction (for example the SSE updates), or a new ride entirely. I just wish they didn't rid these attractions. They're so fantastic. And while I like Test Track, I don't think it's good enough to replace this. And Mission Space is a joke compared to Horizons
I totally agree with what everyone is saying about the ride and all, but why is everyone making references to Walt? i'm pretty sure that Ward Kimball's world of motion wasn't part of his "E.P.C.O.T" florida project...most of WDW wasn't walt's ideas, mk was a modified copy of dland and epcot was something entirely different from progress city
rides like Horizons and Motion where of the EXCELLENT rides that made Epcot different, creative and nothing short of amazing, I don't understand why they destroy them, if they have problems they should just upgrade them, they have the space to build more rides like test drive and mission to mars, IS A GOOD THING Michael Eisner isn't in charge anymore, is also sad to see how they took out the submarines in WDW
The rides weren't closed because no one liked them at all. It had to do with sponsorship, in my opinion. On the other hand, new rides bring in the visitors and more money.
@don19491 I heard the sponsorships were like $10 million a year back when this was still there. Should be chump change for companies this large, no? And I think that, now more than ever, if I see a company sponsoring a ride the amount of good will towards them goes up, knowing that it's much more difficult to get them to do it these days.
This ride was really educational. Even toward the end you go through a simulation of 1940s 50s era and it did such a good job of depicting that era with the cars, the black and white TV in fast motion and the stage props. The whole point to Epcot was to give children an educational experience that was not boring. Test Track was fun, but replacement rides like that is ruining the learning experience that Epcot was meant to provide.
I am a huge Walt Disney World fan and EPCOT is my favorite park by far! I was so upset when Disney changed the World of Motion to Test Track. I go every year and I think I have road Test Track twice... So, I wish they would make a park with the old classics as well...
Those fluid - moving 'run' cycles appear to be video projections here. (Maybe it's just the interlace effect given on the tape by default.) anyway, in the mid-80s, these projections were 100% movie film -- classy.
Used to believe this was the awesomest of the pavilion rides in the original Epcot (mid-80s). Who remembers the WEIRD effect at the pavilion's entrance which made riders appear to have been compressed to 1/8 their original size and funnelled through thin glass tubes?
@LRIGWAK Hey, that's probably it! I know I rode that ride somewhere. Thought they had that same effect at the entrance to World of Motion - was that actually Disneyland? There's someone who posted a kind of simulation of the Inner Space ride and it seems to have that effect in it. I remember it looking pretty real! Also, it wasn't related to that film 'Innerspace' at all.
Wish they'd do more of these rides... so much detail and work involved in those animatronic/diorama heavy rides. Sick of screens (which I know have in perfect 3D at my local cinema, than you very much) and glorified roller coasters.
I rode this with my Grandmother and we both liked it. She would never have ridden test track. See... breaking up the family is just what Walt was against.
orlando, how we love you when we are there, how we miss you when we are gone, for every ride we miss and every park we sigh for, orlando, thank you, you keep me sane when my world is falling apart, one land once said " if you can dream it you can do it" im still dreaming and i hope one day i can do it, thank you orlando, thank you disney and all the other s, hope i see you again xxx
@emt49 Oh I soooo hear ya!!! I like the new stuff ok but WOW....HORIZONS was sooooo cool! My parents didn't like Epcot much because not enough for them to get on! I love the name you picked...You're HIRED!!!
@CaedusRising Give me some credit. I was just a WDW fan fantasizing, like a lot of other WDW fans.. I know they were torn down and not stored in a warehouse somewhere!
I can't believe this ride is gone! What a disrespect to Walt. Next thing they'll tear down Carousel of Progress and replace it with some bungee jumping simulation ride.
As much fun as Testtrack is, this ride was just heartwarming. I miss the way Disney World used to be. They did a great job of making it a personal experience as opposed to an opportunity to siphon your wallet.
The courtyard in front of Spaceship Earth is the most hideous example. I nearly wept the first time I saw those awful stone pillars that wrecked that majestic and inspiring plaza.
I think Walt would be a little annoyed, even after he saw the balance sheets.
I fear that disney might take down Spaceship Earth soon. Just think about it. They could put some type of thrill ride in there that does a loop or something and take away a story telling ride. AGAIN
I so agree that Disney seems to be headed to Six Flags status. Rides like this and Horizons were indeed sets of ART. Now it seems that an update to Disney is just one more Movie ride. Watch a movie screen and get tossed around. Watch a movie screen and spin. Watch a movie screen and..
I wish they would have left this and added test track as an extension. I fail to understand why Disney demolishes attractions rather than add on to them. I assume cost is a reason, however, LIKE WHAT WALT WANTED, rather than build 'extra' parks in far away lands. Concentrate everything in WDW; Like WALT said, "there is enough land here to hold all of the ideas we could possibly imagine." Disney is Not Six Flags but they are trying to get there.
@mickeyminniegoofy Instead of building parks in far-away-lands? Please tell me, have you always been a selfcentered prick? The world is bigger than the US, try to broaden your horizon and stop being a close minded Hillbilly....
@o0Slipdisc0o ??? Hillbilly? I have lived all over the world sir and I am not White. Also, I fail to see why such a strong reaction to my opinion. Its not really a big deal M8, it's just Disney World. And what is so wrong with them adding new attractions without demolishing the old ones? That was my point. Lastly, you obviously know about pricks. Though I doubt that you actually have one. Hee, Hee
@mickeyminniegoofy It's obviously because people stop going to them because most average people find this kind of stuff boring and outdated so Disney adds more themed and whimsical rides. It's that simple.
@mickeyminniegoofy I TOTALLY agree. I love most of the new additions, but greatly miss many of the old ones they completely got rid of. I love Test Track, but would love to have World of Motion back somewhere on Disney World property. One huge mistake was totally getting rid of Alien Encounter and repalcing it with "Stitch's Great Escape". BIG mistake, in my opinion. But, in all, I absolutely love WDW!!!
@mickeyminniegoofy The other parks across the world are really cool, particularly the original Dland and the 1 in Tokyo.it wouldn't be all that great if Disney never replaced or updated attractions, having all the rides ever made crammed next to one another would be like making a movie 7 hours long, you have to leave a scene or 2 on the cutting room floor, or else the really great stuff will just be lost.If Disney makes the right choice on what to keep and what to replace, that's up for debate.
@mickeyminniegoofy Walt was all about PROGRESS. He did not want his parks to become shrines of the past, if a certain attraction was aging and becoming dated he would want it to be replaced with something more relevant of the times. Walt would be ashamed if someone visited Epcot and than 20 years later came back and saw the exact same dated attractions from decades before. Walt always said he wanted his parks to change and evolve over time and stay modern.
@BeatlesAnthology He also said, "I love the nostalgic myself. I hope we never lose some of the things of the past."
You can use a quote from Walt to justify pretty much anything, as long as you cherry-pick the right one. Replacing things is fine, as long as you can be sure you're replacing it with something better, that has at least the same artistic integrity as what you're replacing.
i recently visited epcot and alot of the sets from this ride r in the epcot ball its called spaceship earth so if u miss this kind of ride check out the epcot ball.
No they are not. Both rides were built at the same time. They are similar in style. I do miss the old Disney style of story telling. As opposed to the 'Branding' that exists now. But such reflects a society that has no appreciation for art. Or things that they 'don't understand'. Old EPCOT Center was very intelligent, elegant and sophisticated.
ah yes, thank you starfish53...I am going back in a few months and so distinctly remember that ride from the early to mid 90's and those dinosaurs, wow I used to love them!
Does anyone remember the ride that was presented by Exxon Mobile, all I remember is you were in sort of a big car and it started out with seeing all kinds of dinosaurs? I can't remember the name if it and am wondering it is even still around!
Thank you so much for posting this great video. This was one of my favorite EPCOT rides. I do miss it very much and brings back great memories to see it. As a previous post had stated though EPCOT is doing what they are supposed to and they are trying to keep up with the times. EPCOT= Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow
first of all World of Motion was very good i hated that it had to go at the same time test track is good but i wish that they would have bought more land buy it and put it their and had both World of Motion and test track

I never got a chance to go on this one, or any of the classic Epcot rides... But I have to say, it does seem rather bland. And I really don't think Test Track is much of an improvement (boring ride, awful theming, with one grand "hoorah" at the end.) If they ever wanted to gut TT and replace it with a different theme (who knows what) it wouldn't be difficult, considering that most of the ride is just road signs and cardboard cut outs of trees.
This was a gem back in the day, but unlike Horizions and the original Journey Into Imagination, I like what replaced it better. Test Track is an amazing ride and one of the best rides at Disney, period. This was great, but Test Track is better.
I wasn't alive for half of these rides...and I miss them anyways.
I muss the skyway ride, and the OLD submarine ride that's now been replaced with the ultra-gay finding nemo ride. I really miss America Sings and all of those fun attractions...
Yes this ride along with horizons will be greatly missed. I rode both of those countless times and seeing them again gives me that warm fuzzy feeling I used to get as a kid riding them. But I suppose with new technology, the old rubber anamatronics and 8mm videos weren't cutting it anymore. As much as I miss the old rides you have to give props to Disney for knowing when they are outdated and replacing them with quality attractions.
I went on this ride when I was 10 and was SO FREAKED OUT by the end of the ride when the tram went through the movie tunnels. Not sure why but they creeped me out beyond belief.
What is it about W.O.M. and Horizons that made them such great rides? It wasn't the thrill factor, it was the inspiration factor. I miss these rides, thanks for posting this!

this was boring and slow they had all slow rides they needed a little speed good riddens and test track was great it did a great job on explaining the way that cars are tested and how they work which was what it was meant for so all you retards that prefer this your stupid and dont know what majority of the crowd wants
Yes, let's follow the majority, since they're obviously doing such a good job. Let's take Disneyland, CA for example. What with the oh-so-fun and fascinating Finding Nemo Ride, the Buzz Lightyear Astro-blasters, you know, the one that lasts two minutes, and let's not forget the empty lot where the Country Bears Jamboree used to be where now you pass it's empty lot on the way to the always-empty Winnie the Pooh Ride. *rolls eyes*
Just returned from EPCOT: DID NOT LIKE MISSION:SPACE . Miss Horizons and World of Motion, we do not need rides that just toss you around or shoot you at a fast speed.Disney is a better park than that.
it would be really awesome if they would make a 5th park with all the old & classic rides since disney opned and the otther shows and stuff that no longer exist...call it classic disney park
In a way I am sad to see this once great attraction lost in time, but FemmeDePunkRock is very much correct with saying EPCOT "was always meant to be a park that changes with the discovery of new technologies", nicely said.
Umm EPCOT, Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, was always meant to be a park that changes with the discovery of new technologies etc. I understand we're all sentimental for the old stuff, I kind of wish they hadn't replaced this stuff too, but they're kind of required to keep current given the name and all.
The sentiment's right enough, but I think the real concern, apart from nostalgia, is that Test Track doesn't do much to fill you with wonder over transportation technology the way World of Motion did. It's a thrill ride, and that's important, but it's not much else. Mission: Space suffers from some of the same troubles, though I wasn't a big Horizons fan by any means.
I really don't agree. The history of transportation hasn't changed. They could have updated it by adding segments about new developments in transportation. Or perhaps they could have updated the technology to the existing ride. I was here in the summer of 1984, and Disney has other rides from that time that are still there, i.e. "Pirates..." They added to the exhibit because of the movie of course, but it's still there.
Yes. If I wanted to go on a thrill ride, I'd go to some shitty mindless theme park like Universal, or I'd go on one of the many high-quality thrill rides already in Disney World - ones that weren't the replacement for gutted classic Disney rides.
But you're a little thug kid, so I wouldn't expect you to understand.
That's what makes the parks great. The company actually gives a shit about the quality of its service and the standards of its cast members. I wish a lot more businesses would adopt Disney's policies.
sadly, this video doesn't really convey the immersive quality and humor of this ride which was far and away more entertaining than "Test Track" which replaced it.
Figment is still there but not in its original state. The original version of the ride was much better than hat is there now. The figment that is there now is awful compared to the original.
oh yes i heard of this ride, another ride thats gone at epcot is the ride were you get a tour of the many computers that control lots of stuff at epcot, now days the computers are much smaller and not so many
How rude! You probably prefer video games to museums too, huh? The original idea of Epcot wasn't to be a thrill park. It was to educate, inform, and motivate.
summer tourist season, there was a whole lot not working. Also, I think it would be wise for the McDonald's restaurants in the
park to serve up "Disney Only" versions of their products, instead of the same stuff you buy in your local neighborhood. That would also be a justification for the inflated prices of the McDonalds products in the park. I love the Disney parks more than
anything, and it breaks my heart to see things being overlooked
Haunted Mansion in rehab, Stich Escapes was only about 50% functional in the area I sat in, the people mover paused a few times, then broke down completely and we were stranded on it for 40 minutes. One track of Space Mountain was closed down for hours and the other was closed down for 85 minutes.
For one thing, the last time I was there in July 2007, there were a lot of rides out of service for that day, or in rehab, or shut down permanently, and worst of all, several rides that broke down or were not fully functional.
My dream job would be to walk the parks and look for things that could be improved, fixed, enhanced, or even done away with. There is a LOT of resources at Disney being squandered on things that don't matter, and there are a LOT of simple things that could be done to improve the place.
I was stuck at the 6:21 mark when the ride broke down.
Watching the video of Old San Francisco Market Street was a treat!

Hopefully they wont..because disney himself came up with that..they would totally disgrace his name if they did that
LaurenKil84 2 years ago
I so agree that Disney seems to be headed to Six Flags status. Rides like this and Horizons were indeed sets of ART. Now it seems that an update to Disney is just one more Movie ride. Watch a movie screen and get tossed around. Watch a movie screen and spin. Watch a movie screen and..
LRIGWAK 2 years ago 4
I wish they would have left this and added test track as an extension. I fail to understand why Disney demolishes attractions rather than add on to them. I assume cost is a reason, however, LIKE WHAT WALT WANTED, rather than build 'extra' parks in far away lands. Concentrate everything in WDW; Like WALT said, "there is enough land here to hold all of the ideas we could possibly imagine." Disney is Not Six Flags but they are trying to get there.
mickeyminniegoofy 2 years ago 22
@mickeyminniegoofy Instead of building parks in far-away-lands? Please tell me, have you always been a selfcentered prick? The world is bigger than the US, try to broaden your horizon and stop being a close minded Hillbilly....
o0Slipdisc0o 1 year ago
@o0Slipdisc0o ??? Hillbilly? I have lived all over the world sir and I am not White. Also, I fail to see why such a strong reaction to my opinion. Its not really a big deal M8, it's just Disney World. And what is so wrong with them adding new attractions without demolishing the old ones? That was my point. Lastly, you obviously know about pricks. Though I doubt that you actually have one. Hee, Hee
mickeyminniegoofy 1 year ago
@mickeyminniegoofy It's obviously because people stop going to them because most average people find this kind of stuff boring and outdated so Disney adds more themed and whimsical rides. It's that simple.
ashtonmadhatter 9 months ago
@mickeyminniegoofy I TOTALLY agree. I love most of the new additions, but greatly miss many of the old ones they completely got rid of. I love Test Track, but would love to have World of Motion back somewhere on Disney World property. One huge mistake was totally getting rid of Alien Encounter and repalcing it with "Stitch's Great Escape". BIG mistake, in my opinion. But, in all, I absolutely love WDW!!!
yesorlando05 9 months ago
@mickeyminniegoofy The other parks across the world are really cool, particularly the original Dland and the 1 in Tokyo.it wouldn't be all that great if Disney never replaced or updated attractions, having all the rides ever made crammed next to one another would be like making a movie 7 hours long, you have to leave a scene or 2 on the cutting room floor, or else the really great stuff will just be lost.If Disney makes the right choice on what to keep and what to replace, that's up for debate.
williamtheconqueror9 5 months ago
@mickeyminniegoofy Walt also said that the parks were not meant to be Museums but rather a testament to human ability innovation and imagination
sdpunk9 4 months ago
@mickeyminniegoofy Walt was all about PROGRESS. He did not want his parks to become shrines of the past, if a certain attraction was aging and becoming dated he would want it to be replaced with something more relevant of the times. Walt would be ashamed if someone visited Epcot and than 20 years later came back and saw the exact same dated attractions from decades before. Walt always said he wanted his parks to change and evolve over time and stay modern.
BeatlesAnthology 3 months ago
@BeatlesAnthology He also said, "I love the nostalgic myself. I hope we never lose some of the things of the past."
You can use a quote from Walt to justify pretty much anything, as long as you cherry-pick the right one. Replacing things is fine, as long as you can be sure you're replacing it with something better, that has at least the same artistic integrity as what you're replacing.

i recently visited epcot and alot of the sets from this ride r in the epcot ball its called spaceship earth so if u miss this kind of ride check out the epcot ball.
phrohibited 2 years ago
No they are not. Both rides were built at the same time. They are similar in style. I do miss the old Disney style of story telling. As opposed to the 'Branding' that exists now. But such reflects a society that has no appreciation for art. Or things that they 'don't understand'. Old EPCOT Center was very intelligent, elegant and sophisticated.
mickeyminniegoofy 2 years ago 5
No, they were built at the same time, Spaceship Earth has different scenes and characters.

I never got a chance to go on this one, or any of the classic Epcot rides... But I have to say, it does seem rather bland. And I really don't think Test Track is much of an improvement (boring ride, awful theming, with one grand "hoorah" at the end.) If they ever wanted to gut TT and replace it with a different theme (who knows what) it wouldn't be difficult, considering that most of the ride is just road signs and cardboard cut outs of trees.
iambluebird 3 years ago
didnt it close down and then sat there for a few years before they started to work on it for test track??
CFDChris237 3 years ago 2
This ride wasn't taken down until what must've been 1996. I was born in 86 and remember riding this until I was at least around 10.

Gawd. what happened to disney?
sowhathomiec 3 years ago
Yes this ride along with horizons will be greatly missed. I rode both of those countless times and seeing them again gives me that warm fuzzy feeling I used to get as a kid riding them. But I suppose with new technology, the old rubber anamatronics and 8mm videos weren't cutting it anymore. As much as I miss the old rides you have to give props to Disney for knowing when they are outdated and replacing them with quality attractions.

I went on this ride when I was 10 and was SO FREAKED OUT by the end of the ride when the tram went through the movie tunnels. Not sure why but they creeped me out beyond belief.

this was boring and slow they had all slow rides they needed a little speed good riddens and test track was great it did a great job on explaining the way that cars are tested and how they work which was what it was meant for so all you retards that prefer this your stupid and dont know what majority of the crowd wants
knokout1 3 years ago
Yes, let's follow the majority, since they're obviously doing such a good job. Let's take Disneyland, CA for example. What with the oh-so-fun and fascinating Finding Nemo Ride, the Buzz Lightyear Astro-blasters, you know, the one that lasts two minutes, and let's not forget the empty lot where the Country Bears Jamboree used to be where now you pass it's empty lot on the way to the always-empty Winnie the Pooh Ride. *rolls eyes*
Good for the majority. Splendid job.

Northern1Lass 3 years ago 2
Yes test track is now in its place.
Luige11 3 years ago
Umm EPCOT, Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, was always meant to be a park that changes with the discovery of new technologies etc. I understand we're all sentimental for the old stuff, I kind of wish they hadn't replaced this stuff too, but they're kind of required to keep current given the name and all.
FemmeDePunkRock 3 years ago
The sentiment's right enough, but I think the real concern, apart from nostalgia, is that Test Track doesn't do much to fill you with wonder over transportation technology the way World of Motion did. It's a thrill ride, and that's important, but it's not much else. Mission: Space suffers from some of the same troubles, though I wasn't a big Horizons fan by any means.
AttilatheProf 3 years ago
I really don't agree. The history of transportation hasn't changed. They could have updated it by adding segments about new developments in transportation. Or perhaps they could have updated the technology to the existing ride. I was here in the summer of 1984, and Disney has other rides from that time that are still there, i.e. "Pirates..." They added to the exhibit because of the movie of course, but it's still there.
infancysguard 2 years ago
My point is that it was a fun, solid ride that was worthy of being saved.
infancysguard 2 years ago 2
This, along with the destruction of Horizons, was one of the worst losses EPCOT Center has faced.
And now they've raped Spaceship Earth - turned it into a mockery.
I don't like the direction the park is going.

your telling me you would rather learn history lessons than go on a thrill ride
mondopimp 3 years ago
Yes. If I wanted to go on a thrill ride, I'd go to some shitty mindless theme park like Universal, or I'd go on one of the many high-quality thrill rides already in Disney World - ones that weren't the replacement for gutted classic Disney rides.
But you're a little thug kid, so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

just curious as to what was there? Disney has such strict appearance guidelines, im suprised anyone works there
lamofbodom 3 years ago
That's what makes the parks great. The company actually gives a shit about the quality of its service and the standards of its cast members. I wish a lot more businesses would adopt Disney's policies.
TheNilvarg 3 years ago
sadly, this video doesn't really convey the immersive quality and humor of this ride which was far and away more entertaining than "Test Track" which replaced it.

For the peak of the
summer tourist season, there was a whole lot not working. Also, I think it would be wise for the McDonald's restaurants in the
park to serve up "Disney Only" versions of their products, instead of the same stuff you buy in your local neighborhood. That would also be a justification for the inflated prices of the McDonalds products in the park. I love the Disney parks more than
anything, and it breaks my heart to see things being overlooked
jdohe 4 years ago
Haunted Mansion in rehab, Stich Escapes was only about 50% functional in the area I sat in, the people mover paused a few times, then broke down completely and we were stranded on it for 40 minutes. One track of Space Mountain was closed down for hours and the other was closed down for 85 minutes.
jdohe 4 years ago
bummer that this ride is gone it was one of my favorites oh well, things come n go down there i guess..
Setka1982 4 years ago
For one thing, the last time I was there in July 2007, there were a lot of rides out of service for that day, or in rehab, or shut down permanently, and worst of all, several rides that broke down or were not fully functional.
jdohe 4 years ago
My dream job would be to walk the parks and look for things that could be improved, fixed, enhanced, or even done away with. There is a LOT of resources at Disney being squandered on things that don't matter, and there are a LOT of simple things that could be done to improve the place.
jdohe 4 years ago
