When I lived in Detroit in the mid 90's, I often enjoyed the Canadian music drifting across the border from Windsor. I enjoyed listening to Charlie Major, Blue Rodeo, Prairie Oyster, etc. and wondered why they were not on US radio. Then one day I found something on the net indicating the US and Canadian recording industry orgs got into some sort of fight. That may explain the lack of commercial success by Canadian artist in the US.

I think that you need to listen to it along with the following line "I'm careless and I'm cruel but I'm still easily bruised." It's a direct contrast from a line at the beginning of the song when he says "We're so scared of the silence and the tricks that we use. Oh, we're careful and we're cunning, but we're easily bruised." To me the song is about two people who act all tough and macho and carefree as a front, but they each seem to be the only ones who can really understand each other.
