im looking at buying a bagpipe what bagpipe should i get highland or somthing different. i like to know please thanks email it at dukerob009@hotmail.com never played before but i like bagpipes and the sound
I've had to do that many a time over my playing career. Of course, I was an impatient 10-year-old when I started playing, moved onto the pipes too soon, didn't have my timing/embellishments down like I should have. A few years later I un-learned everything and re-learned it. I've still got some really bad habits that I'm trying to un-learn.
Oh well. I always get positive comments when doing weddings and funerals so I must not be too bad!
You've got to be kidding!! Open competition... no way.
As far as the way the pipes sound... The drones or the chanter?
I did compete Grade 4 for the 1st time a couple of weekends ago, and probably placed last, and at the same time I didn't go to take the crowd by storm. I got my feet wet, and got a lot of support from other pipers out of no-where which in my book is a success.
I almost scratched because of tech probs, but all of them said "Go and Play" and they were serious about it, so I did.
The Open competition. Why not? Let's face it, here on YouTube you've shown you can play continuous for over 10 minutes, you could easily and I mean easily play the duration of a MSR. Don't let it scare you the more complex tunes or players, as they were once in the same boat as you.
You need to find a shop or a friend who has a great highland chanter with your original drones. Try that first for the better sound. Once youve got that sorted you have the makings of a good player.
BTW in this Vid I'm using a very easy Caldwell reed which I blew out warming up for comp. It was letting me know it was on it's way out anyway. I upgraded to an Abedour medium reed which "woke" up the chanter... er um after the comp.
I haven't had a chance to watch an open comp. so I'll have to see what it's like before I jump into that, too many horror stories.
I need three or four grade IV comps under my belt before I do anything else absolutely.
Judging by the overall sound of the chanter I wouldnt of thought even a high quality reed such as a Warnock or even a Shepard could make a difference. I could be wrong though. But that would certainly be the cheaper option by changing the reed.
Horror stories? The length of time you can stay focused? I dont think so.
Its all about mindset. You go in pleasing yourself, nobody else and youll do well.
This particular chanter I've learned likes the traditional style reeds like the Shepherd and the McCann, when I use a ridge cut reed the "E" note gets fussy, and "F" sounds funny.
The pipes are Sulshi and from what I understand they are Pakistani military pipes. The combing looks like early 1900's Roberstons. I am using the original chanter that came with the pipes with a Caldwell ridge cut reed. I tune "D" and "C" slightly sharp to try to catch the chord, 466hz tuning.
The drone reeds have extenders on them and the reeds are balance tones. My arms are too long for the bag I have, and I probably have to readjust my blow pipe out a couple of inches too.

I loved it !! But, you should no longer perform Amazing Grace in a garage. You should perform this on a hill or mountain top so as many can hear !!!
This hymn and bag pipes were meant to go together !!!

Wow Thanks!! I've been struggling, and even quit playing some tunes, so that I could relearn them.

Sometimes that's what you have to do.

I doubt very much you could compete in Grade 4with Amazing Grace and Scots Wha Hae. If you did, I doubt youd get anywhere.
But you can play the 79ths Farewell to Gibraltar.
Why not add a strathspey and a reel and youll have a MSR and then be able to compete in most 'Open' competitions?
Politely speaking about the sound of your pipes played, it would be a good idea to upgrade to a great highland set before thinking about competitions.
