How do you put rock, jazz and folk in the same music and produce something brilliant as this? Folk he said in an interview, and here it is. I feel like he is telling a hot, tense, dark Persian story. I hear snakes hissing, I feel the sand blown by the hot wind scratching on my face and the passion that no other peoples than those in the Orient express.
Thank you for posting this song. Morphine is one of those rare groups that produced something so utterly amazing it can never be compared to anything else. They truly created some of the most beautiful music this world has ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
i hadn't had any idea about this band..i was searching something and i ended up listening this one...and now i can listen it again and again...nice melody and music...love it
i hadn't had any idea about this band..i was searching something and i ended up listening this one...and now i can listen it again and again...nice melody and music...love it
i don't typically care for listening to saxophone music even though i play it myself...but this is notably good music. almost post rock oriented alot of times.
I just rediscovered this band. I will literally wait a few months between listening for the first time to a "new" Morphine song on youtube, just....because.
Just listened to this song for the first time tonight. DAAAAAAAAAAMN they were good. Now, I wish I would have driven 10 hours to see them back in the day.
I saw them live at an outdoor musicfest in Chicago, about a week before Sandman died. It was, hands down, the best live show I've ever seen.
It was a really hot summer day, and just before they came on stage, the barometric pressure dropped, and the tempurature dropped, and towering cumulous clouds came rolling in overhead above the stage.
And morphine took the stage and three dudes never played so well. It was better than their recordings.
They were scheduled to play in Portland OR after their European tour - I couldn't wait to go - Mark didn't make it home. Oh my heart still breaks...and every time I listen to "The Night" I hear tragedy coming.
I have no idea how they do it, but every part of this song is just amazing. It's so unfair for Mark, too, because had Morphine gone on for a good few years more I could see this album being the apex, or at least a high point, of both Morphine and The Sandman's career.
Morphine is awesome, nobody else has that low rock sound quite like they do, I have all their albums, anybody who digs Morphine should also check out Mark Sandmans earlier work with Treat Her Right.
@Hermunkle Our bad, we meant: Hooked on *Morphine. Must've been tired at the time. But you know how it is, trying to type in the middle of The Night.
A friend of mine introduced me to this band in the late 90's. I've never forgiven that friend for doing so, because these guys totally blew my mind...so instead, I thank him.
I've bought this cd time after time, and always managed to lose it or have it stolen..but- I always find my way winding back to their music and introducing it to others who just love it..Thanks for posting. And yes, that is an Oud which is being used.
Sandman did play a 2 string bass with funky tunings and a glass slide... not saying its not the instrument your mentioning, but Mark's bass setup was anything but conventional
paint it black rolling stones Marks era, he also listened to a very eclectic mix of music, I used to hang out with Mark, and he always had all kinds of different thins he was interested in. and it wasn't just music,he was interested in all kinds of world's culture, art. books, offbeat instruments and effects. a really kind and decent guy, no bullshit though, very dedicated to his pursuit of music, took a long time to get any success. much to his credit he persevered. may he r.i.p.
@ivansolbes its unlikely you will, this song was only performed live in the last tour before his death, perhaps 25 maybe 30 shows.. I dont think any were officially recorded. Which is a shame, it was an amazing tour. I was lucky enough to see 6 shows on the east coast.
Believe me when I say this. I MUST FIND MORE SONGS with this strange, middle-eastern mellow vibe. Or just any band that experiments with this mellow, ethnic stuff.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For a middle eastern vibe check out some Sting. Ever since Desert Rose he has been quite fond of that Arabian sound. Sacred Love and The Book of My Life come to mind...
Try "Dead Can Dance"! They have a million albums but "Into the Labrynth" and "Spirit Chaser". You might of heard their songs in movies like "man on fire" and many others. The female singers voice is trendy and in dramatic scenes in many movies. I like morphine A LOT, but they dont even compare to Dead Can Dance.
No, unfortunately. Didn't even find anything vaguely similar to Morphine, although I do quite like Treat Her Right, even though they're distinctly different from Morphine.
@ivansolbes well, twinemen is similar because it's the same band with a new singer. but judging from the ..., i'm guessing you knew that and were just being jestful.
@BubTheZombie1 AKACOD is a closer feel to Morphine than Twinemen, but honestly, nothing will ever be the same. Mark was one of a kind, its impossible to bring then influence and sound he had back.
this shit is poisining me and i love it!
