why do we always want to make things "deep" and "special"? return to the first chapter of the diamond sutra. its very simple. "tathagata" = thus come.. just like this..
jesus said he performed "miracles" because people have little faith. they want to see "special".
what more do we want? too straightforward for us means its not complicated enough. so its not deep enough. must not be a true teaching.
this monk has a long way to go before he can lay claim to "lecturing on the Diamond Sutra", therefore, two things: (1) those of you who did not get much that is "invincible diamond" from his lecture, please don't blame the sutra and don't be discourage; and (2) may his demonstrated devotion to this highest sutra soon bloom for him into true realization.

He's talking basic sense he's just making it accessible I suppose. Christianity is the main religion in Korea and sadly evangelical. By having an American as a monk it is probably quite a shrewd choice, because American culture is viewed in Korea as being meaningful and important so he would be respected. He's also probably capable of talking at a different level to people aware of the lofty and complex doctrines of Buddhism.
well it was more of like a Pun, joke 'he is after all a zen monk'. where in zen , "don't know" is the sorta motto...
I think the talk was also like that bcoz of the audience. maybe since its just a light talk, he simplified the lesson. he gave the child example, w/c isn't literally true, to state a point.

"You never meet a child with sleeping problems." This man has never met a child. It's true that children can often sleep anywhere but equally true that children often have trouble falling asleep. He needs to talk to some mother with a newborn. Given his ignorance of something as basic as this, I really don't think I can trust him to talk about the Diamond Sutra.

keyword "Like" a child, not become a child.
I agree he doesnt know much. but he warned us at the start that he doesnt know much. he is after all a zen monk.

Because he is only a "zen monk"
There is no wisdom in his words?
Are "zen monks" deficient?
