@boz987 That was the World Title belt used from 1959 until 1973. Race received the Globe Dome belt (the 10 pounds of gold) shortly before his match Jack Brisco. I believe the original belt had a red strap
Ironically, Race was seen more as a transitional champion. The NWA wanted Dory to drop the belt to Jack Brisco, but Dory Sr. didn't much care for Jack. It was then decided that Dory would drop the belt to Race and Race would hold it for a few months until they could schedule the match with Brisco.
@samsdaddy0525 Dory Funk jr was the face and Harley Race was the heel, but since the match took place in Kansas City, Race's hometown, then I guess a lot of the fans were cheering for Harley. :)
Harley Race won a world title with a regular vertical suplex. Where can I find his first world title defense, where he won by submission with a collar-and-elbow tie-up?
It seems like older wrestling was more stiff, had slower matches and the moves were more basic. Maybe today's wrestling matches don't have as much legit striking, but it's more entertaining and it's better when people don't get injured as much.
This match was in Kansas City, KS at Memorial Hall. It was shown on All Star Wrestling. My sister and I were in shock when Race pinned Junior for the title.
yeah, back THEN a vertical suplex WAS devastating. But I understand. Seeing wrestling and all the insane stuff they do now, you'd get laughed out of the area if you got beat with that. That's why retarded moves like the "worm" and "cobra" are novelty moves.... LOL
@ktron70 I see what you mean. Wrestling was a totally different world back in the 1973. The suplex (especially Race's) was a finishing move back then. A little side note: the NWA's original plan was for Funk to drop the belt to Jack Brisco. It went instead to Race here...who would in turn drop it to Brisco a few months later.
@ktron70 ... back then, bcuz the business was about being more realistic, a vertical suplex was a great finisher, i watch mixed martial arts all the time & a bodyslam or suplex truly is devestating ...
I'm getting a pair of Race's wrestling trunks! LOL!

Race should have been DQ'ed just because of those trunks he had on. LOL

The difference is that that ring doesn't give much either...probably in St Louis where they were reputed to be hard as concrete.

It's a shame he couldn't have beat him with something a little more devastating than a suplex
