Thank you Jemima for your great work in highlighting the damage done to a special breed. I'm a lucky one my GSD (R.I.P Elsa) lived till she was 14 and a half without any hip problems due to her in my opinion having a straight back. lets hope more breeders take notice of your docs and start breeding for health rather than a breed standard. Good luck in your work Ben.
@tarponben I second your thoughts. And R.I.P to your Elsa. I'm glad she lived as long as she did, being a large purebred. I recently lost both my dogs, though they were mixed breeds, so they lived to 15 and 17 respectively.
Another prime example of how a beautiful breed of dog has been brought to its knees. Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder in this case, if this was a child this would be considered gross neglect. All dog breeders had better start considering the ethical reasons for doing what they are to their dogs. Each breeding should be for the betterment of the breed. Firstly, you must understand anatomy & motion. None of these dogs show signs of correct movement. Shocking. The KC should be ashamed...
All these dogs are probably going to get major hip problems just from the way they stand. They all looked forced, it seems painful (or looks that way) and they seem to have issues just walking.... If anybody actually cares for the breed, then breed them the right way to look like dogs, not ramps.

Jesus wept, the poor thing can barely walk, let alone gait. My GSD is a show dog reject - she was bred from imported (German working lines) dogs (into Australia). Her parents are big, with straight backs. I got her as a pet because she's too tall, and has a floppy ear (chomped by a littermate when she was a baby puppy), but she has a nice straight back, big feet, and a beautiful floating gait. We do obedience, and she's a pleasure to watch and train.
@AkaneReyes the working german shepherd or the police german is the way they should look. this is the show german, really all its good for and it has bad back legs. its called half dog half frog
Why in the world this look would be appealing to anyone is beyond me. I am so glad my GSD is an Old fashioned GSD and has a straight back. These dogs are pitiful and anyone who breeds them aren't true dog lovers, imho.
That poor dog is so wobbly in the back he can barely get around. These "breeders" cause so much pain for their own gain in my opinion they are on the same level with people like Michael Vick.
If you beat a dog with a stick and caused him as much pain as this deformity does you would get arrested but... It seems OK as long as the dog is born with a deformity which causes pain for life.
Absolutely disgusting.
I grew up in Germany as a child and saw the REAL GSD with a straight back. GREAT dogs!

Also, yes, the angles of their hocks do make them look weak at a standstill. I'm not a fan of overangulation, however JM is right, the angles have never been proven to increase HD in these dogs. HD has more to do with genetics than "form".

All you people clearly are idiots and know nothing about the breed. I happened to see a lot of rear drive from these dogs. Yes, the shape of the breed has changed and for the better I believe. You cannot say that the straight back sheps are better looking, surely. And so put to bed another myth the angulation of the croup does NOT cause hip dysplasia. If anything it has been bred out in the top breeds. Also, it does not shorten their lives. Stupid people. Study up, go to shows, talk to owners
The breeders should be ashamed, it is animal cruelty, there is no strength in the hind quarters they have cow hocks and roach backs. They are breeding in deformaties. If the old saying is true "what goes around comes around" soon they will not have a breed to show, its just a shame the dog has to suffer due to their blindness.
It is such a shame to see what poor breeding for 'breed standard' has done to the German Shepherd Dog.
The dog/s in the video are not fit for the original purpose of the breed. They should be able to move around properly and have a near straight back IMO. I doubt this dog could run; even off leash.
I think the police dogs we see hear in the UK are probably some of the best examples of 'proper' GSDs.
i think it's disgusting that anyone could breed the show dog's like this it look's deformed the straight back working type look alot more attractive than these dog's they look like their crippled why would any body want a dog that look's that way ! i have a straight back GSD from working lines i would never buy a GSD from show lines to me their not what a GSD should be or look like ! their destroying the GSD breed !
@12345675677 Agreed. What peeves me are those who argue that because a few groups decreed that the frog dogs were "better looking in show", and so that's where the current show standard has gone in America at least (Not sure about elsewhere.), that that's a reason to not argue against it at all. I can make my own choice, and I would choose the healthy dog every single time over what the newest FAD dog was.. You are VERY right in saying these look deformed, because.. really they are.
Bad breeding. Breeding for a certain "style" I've known many of these dogs to pass their ofa testing. I have one of these showlines without the extreme roached back. He has no problem running or working. If I didn't find his breeder I would have gone for a working line.
Ghastly video. The dog's rear is made to look even worse by the handler holding it so strangulation tight on the leash, and awkwardly moving the dog slowly around a tiny ring while the dog tries to get its footing. But it would probably not look good even when running. No wonder police don't use these show-line dogs.
That dog moves more like a hyena than a canine. It is a crime to reduce the magnificent German shepherd to such a deformed cripple. What sort of people think that that is beautiful! The judges need to be certified vets and judge for conformational soundness and athletism and not an extreme look. The GSD would soon return to the shepherd of 50 years ago and be so much better for it.
Ahhh, I felt ill watching this. How could breeders do this to such a wonderful animal decended from straight backed wolves. I hope damn well that they sort themselves out and start breeding straight backed sheps with no rear quarters defects. Its disgusting!!!! Shame on them.
I was very touched by your video..fortunately, we have a normal postured GSD...what I fail to understand is who/how did it get decided that deforming their posture made a better looking GSD? The folks that breed the dogs in this manner shld truly be ashamed of themselves!!!
Gameness is a term used for bully dogs like pit bulls, bull dogs, etc true warriors that were bred to go head to head with a bull for example. A dog bred with game will literally never give up & that is why they are used in dog fighting (truly disgusting) & it is a characteristic of the breed. A GSD that will not defend it's family is insecure or fearful but it is not the result of breeding but of life experience & that can be overcome. If GSD's are bred to fight they will be the next pit bull.
I totally agree but law enforcement does not guarantee the breeding will be any better. I don't know when the splayed rear legs became acceptable but you actually see it a lot in GSD's brought into the USA for police work with this condition. The dog that won looks like it in the beginning stages of degenerative myelopathy. If it isn't it appears to have a birth defect.
millie1120 Most "law enforcement" breedings.or working lines are not bred to look like this. You might know a lot about Shepherds, you might not.but for the most part the show lines...like in this video couldn't do real police work if they wanted to because they would back down from a real threat. Just curious what dogs are you seeing brought into the USA?A lot of the dogs I'm seeing aren't like that then again they aren't showlines either sorry possible confusion on my part on what you meant.
hey sheeve, I love GSD's and found this video very upsetting. About 2 yrs ago I read articles written by US GSD breeders and their concern about foreign GSD's not bred to standard since so many are imported to US. If bred to standard a GSD could be shown or Schultzhund trained. But I disagree with your comment that the video dog would back down from a real threat. A GSD will never back down but will do down for their family. PS You look like you have some beautiful huskies.
Millie I mean most German showlines will back down from a real threat as in a criminal....the fight drive was bred out of them for the most part which is why they aren't the most common ones in KNPV, PSA, or police work....yes there are some out there, quite a few actually.....but the super hard dogs out there like Max van Tiekerhook, Mambo z Pohranicni Straze, Maxs' sire Nick, and many others are producing "real" dogs. Nothing wrong with a showline GSD at all though by the way.
Sheeve, Actually they are herding dogs and only really bred to protect they do not have gameness bred into them like pits. Schultzhund trained dogs mus have a reliable temperament and must show courage without viciousnessuses. Not really what I would consider a fighter. Are the breeders you mention breeding to standard or just agressive dogs?
Realize that Schutzhund is just a sport. It is taught through prey drive, not aggression. Therefore it is just a game to them. The aggression part comes later on after bite development, and when the dog is ready....otherwise you can have an unstable dog. The dogs I mentioned are not agressive dogs. Mambo z Pohranicni Straze produces dogs who are outgoing and friendly with new people, but at the same time can turn in a flash to fight if needed. I will say...not ALL shepherds will protect
I can link you to videos of the showline dogs in a TRUE courage test..they almost all backed down and ran. They just don't have it. The harder dogs like Max or Mambo would take it and respond to the challenge by putting up a fight. I can also show you information on very experienced breeders and trainers who are also aware of the fight drive being bred out...remember..schutzhund protection = prey drive .police dogs NEED fight drive..schutzhund protection is only a game, police protection is real
Sure, send me the link. I'm always open to learning. But the breeders cannot be breeding to the AKC (OK I said it) standard because it is based on how and why a breed of dog was used and to maintain those characteristics. Huskies would be a good example of why some people gravitate toward that breed-and a good breeder will try to maintain their original qualities and temperment.. If a GSD is bred for gameness or fight that breeder is just as guilty as the one in the video.
I'll link them in my next comment. What do you mean by "gameness" ?These Shepherds I'm talking about aren't vicious killers. They are stable in all environments and trustworthy around small children and strangers. They respond to real threats and attacks though. The Czech and West German working lines in the Shepherds are bred for hardness, fight drive, ect.but they maintain that along with good nerves and they're good around people.occasionally they aren't, but if the genetics are there then yes.
The thing is, show judges all too easily get used to seeing a deformity as being completely normal. Suffice to say that police and protection GSDs all have a more functional anatomy and perform their jobs brilliantly, even if they don't win rosettes. Show dogs are compromised by a breed standard that puts form over function.
This is just sick. Those dogs are not natural, they have been over-bred by selfish breeders not able to see what a healthy dog looks like. I feel very, very sorry for those poor dogs and people who believe that is how GSD is supposed to look like. Pathetic.
Thank you Jemima for your great work in highlighting the damage done to a special breed. Bad breeding. Breeding for a certain "style" I've known many of these dogs to pass their ofa testing. I have one of these showlines without the extreme roached back. He has no problem running or working. If I didn't find his breeder I would have gone for a working line.

All show dogs are uglier than their working counterparts.

The GSD would soon return to the shepherd of 50 years ago and be so much better for it.

i have 2 straight backed gsd, these dogs look weak not how the german shepherd should be in my eyes,

PS You look like you have some beautiful huskies.
millie1120 3 years ago
Millie I mean most German showlines will back down from a real threat as in a criminal....the fight drive was bred out of them for the most part which is why they aren't the most common ones in KNPV, PSA, or police work....yes there are some out there, quite a few actually.....but the super hard dogs out there like Max van Tiekerhook, Mambo z Pohranicni Straze, Maxs' sire Nick, and many others are producing "real" dogs. Nothing wrong with a showline GSD at all though by the way.
sheeve07 3 years ago
Sheeve, Actually they are herding dogs and only really bred to protect they do not have gameness bred into them like pits. Schultzhund trained dogs mus have a reliable temperament and must show courage without viciousnessuses. Not really what I would consider a fighter. Are the breeders you mention breeding to standard or just agressive dogs?
millie1120 3 years ago
Realize that Schutzhund is just a sport. It is taught through prey drive, not aggression. Therefore it is just a game to them. The aggression part comes later on after bite development, and when the dog is ready....otherwise you can have an unstable dog. The dogs I mentioned are not agressive dogs. Mambo z Pohranicni Straze produces dogs who are outgoing and friendly with new people, but at the same time can turn in a flash to fight if needed. I will say...not ALL shepherds will protect
sheeve07 3 years ago

If a GSD is bred for gameness or fight that breeder is just as guilty as the one in the video.
millie1120 3 years ago

Show dogs are compromised by a breed standard that puts form over function.
handyj443 3 years ago 2
This is just sick. Those dogs are not natural, they have been over-bred by selfish breeders not able to see what a healthy dog looks like. I feel very, very sorry for those poor dogs and people who believe that is how GSD is supposed to look like. Pathetic.
