We have more in common with people of color than anything, especially when we share a common lifestyle/culture like the Goth lifestyle, where there are so many common interests. It's more important to talk about what you have in common than what's different about you.
Pointing out someone's race is generally considered rude. Your race is one of the things about you that matters the least. You were right not to say anything. And don't be nervous, hon. When a person of color sees that you are a white person who is not a racist and who cares about more than their ethnicity, they will in general be accepting of you and it won't be an issue....

The problem is that white people are seen as individuals, while people of colour are seen as a race. People think it's weird if a indian is a lolita, a black person is a goth, if a mexican is an anime-fan or if an arab is into body modification.
And I really love this one, because it reminded me of an ex I dated. He said "black people can't be goth" and just about every subculture out there like Scene and Visual Kei. I told him to shut up and let people be themselves, and he dumped me not to long after. Best thing that happened to me.
Even though I'm not a goth, I approve of people being who they are no matter what skin color they are born with. :)
I'm half white and half Mexican, but I look very pale, if you didn't know my last name or race there'd be no way to tell if I was white or not. But I still feel self conscious at time, especially around other mexicans, so i can relate to those problems. I hope people open there minds more to racial possibilities about the goth sub-culture.
I really appreciate this video. I do identify myself with the idea of the culture, but not always the aesthetic that generally follows. The Idea that as with life we should celebrate death, while being a connoisseur of all things dark, obscure and exquisite. I'm sure those girls at the booth would have been ecstatic to have you initiate a conversation with them. They're people like you. Make new friends. The only difference we have, is that our skin is darker than yours. No more, no less. :)

I'm a black Goth but luckily haven't been judge for it. I suppose it's because I don't dress fully goth as I just don't have the confidence to yet but my mum and sister have never criticised me for being a Goth, they're not really bothered. my mum did used to say I need colour in my wardrobe though (><) i haven't fully evolved as a Goth yet but it would be great to break stereotypes of Goth being a white thing (which is racist :\) I suppose london being multicultural will help with that :)

@fujyoshi awesome dude, i own a lot of tripp pants. i own like about...4 but 2 got ripped cause im growing still o.o they're my favorites too! im trying to find a guy's black baggy tripps for like 2-3 months!! haha i love tripp. i even designed my own tripp clothes. im really inspired by them. but i just need to know the material...of the pants..and trench coat. like if it is cotton or not or maybe silk. making your own clothes are really fun, including when it comes to designing :)

It's just black males that seem to have a problem being goth. I've seen loads of "non-white" goths... and the black ones tend to be female...
Its nothing to do with goths that stop black males being goth... Or else why do we find loads of non-white goths?
Its actually black culture that forces black males into a certain role in life. Black females don't feel trapped by black culture and feel free to step outside it.
I'm a black woman. I have received bad treatment from the goth and punk scene because of my race. I met a deathrock guy who was "amused" at me knowing so much about music. I was at a hardcore punk gig when some idiot tapped me on the shoulder to ask who I was there to see since I didn't "look" like others there. Mind you the only thing that was different about me was my skin color. That's why I'm so grateful for the afropunk documentary. It let me know I'm not alone in my experiences. :)

I moved to a predominately African American town a couple years ago, and a lot of random people (black and white) that I met on the street would whistle and say stuff like "I like me a lady in black" "is it hard to keep your skin that white?" and stuff like that. I was so offended, but then met and befriended a black goth... and she had it soo much harder! it made me feel bad for being so easily offended. she takes it with so much grace, tho... i'm jealous :)

I agree 100% Although I fall more into the metalhead category, there is a prime example in my case too: Lajon Witherspoon is black and many said he couldn't be a successful metal singer, but that didn't stop him from touring the country and selling out open air shows in Sevendust.

Saying Goth is a white people thing is like saying that pizza is a black people thing. It makes virtually no sense. Yes, there are many white people in the Goth scene but so what. I hear the same issue in the metal community. It's more rare that a black person listens to metal but when they do I think it's wonderful. We have alot of hispanic people in the Metal and Goth scene so I don't see the big problem. :D
More than likely, other goths of color won't even register the fact that you're white and therefore won't think you're judging or anything of the like. You don't need to feel nervous! We're just like any other goths, we come from different walks of life and different ancestral backgrounds and even though we may not fit the stereotype of goth, skin color-wise (stereotypes are terrible anyway), we share more in common than not. I'm a person of color and goth (I'm indigenous/mexican). You said you feel nervous talking around other goths of color. I just want to say that first of all, it's very considerate and shows how bright and conscious you are of the racial (and perhaps class) discrepancies in the subculture and the animosity that may exist because of it, instead of just blatantly saying "wow a dark goth!1!" like others may say to us. But you do not have to feel nervous around us :)
I've always said that Goth is a state of mind. It most certainly is not about skin color. I've also heard nonsense that you have to be a particular religion to be Goth. This is also not true. I've been told that because I am a Christian I can't be a Goth. I don't see a problem with being both. It's who I am. I can tell that you are very passionate about this topic. The only thing I hate about being goth and half native american is that I can never get super pale, I always have a golden tint to my skin. But on the bright side, my eyebrows are already black so I dont have to dye them too :D
everyday When i present myself in darker clothing i try not to think about how i'm not white and how everyone at my school dresses nothing like me, and now thanks to you i'll just keep going on the way i do in my creepers and things like it's no ones business of who i am and what i wear o;
I'm mixed with pretty much every kind of race except asian (including middle eastern) i believe i appear hispanic over the others.i don't consider myself to be goth, but im like things like the gothic subcultre, and i take a really big interest in visual kei as well as industrial, and people used to tell me goth is a white thing, or i listen to white music, when really, i listen to all kinds of music from folk music, native music, old school rap, metal, etc. i just dress in rock style
DNA wise race doesnt exist, every humans DNA is 99% identical to everyones in the world, the skin is colored by the area of the earth a group of humans appeared closer to the equater the darker the skin, a natural sun screen and its b/c ik this i ignore race completely b/c its a social thing we as a species have came up with, i think a girl with rich coacoa colored skin in a black corset and lace with her hair pinned up victorian era styled is beautiful, just an example...

@WickedWolfGoddess Wrong. Coloured people have a functional gene for melanin, which is a dark pigment. White people are the result of a mutation which caused this gene to stop working. We share about 97% the DNA the great apes have. Does that mean separate species don't exist?
I live in Germany, and I've met quite a lot of Asian goths and several black ones. I used to be in love with a Japanese goth girl, and a friend of mine's a black goth from England. But for some reason, Turkish goths are really, really rare - I know only two.

The goth scene in Mexico and latin am. in general is A LOT bigger than it is here in the US, why do you think goth bands from here play down there a lot more than they do in their home country. Here's my issue about racism...there is only one race of human: HUMAN. The only differences between the human "races" is skintone, language, and culture. We're all human. End of story. If you wanna look, dress, act a certain way - you're entitled and it makes you you. Quit basing stuff on "race" when we're all one HUMAN race. Voltaire is Cuban as a start. I've known of more Asians who are goth than black people who are. I would like to see more diversity in the subculture. Most goths are tolerant of everything from race to sexuality so I find it strange that there are goths harassing people. How sad.

My best friend is half Maori but she is anemic so she is quite pale. I recently got a new issue of gothic beauty magazine. In the back, there was an article on a wedding dress company. Their model was a black woman, with a beautiful african face, and just a touch of asian in her features. She was wearing a purple and black corset dress and black lipstick. She looked freaking AMAZING!!!!

I live in Toronto, Canada, the most multicultural city in the world...and we still have this problem within the goth community. It sickens me! I have friends of all races and all style choices, goth and not, and you'd think in a city with so many different races and mixes (I'm Native American and white) we'd be more accepting in the goth community. I'm Asian and I'm a Goth, yet some people think only white people can be Goth. I also used to get comments on how I'm not a "true Goth" because I never "invaded the Roman Kingdom" (Does that even make sense to you?) and because I'm always happy and smiling. That's really offensive and annoying, personally. I used to let some many people put me down because of their stupid comments, but I'm confident now and I'm like, "FORGET YOU!" to those people and their comments. I'm ME, not THEM.
@bekhanhnguyen The very first Goths were a Germanic Tribe that became notable for invading and attacking the Roman Empire. Because of this very "crude" attack, the name was tacked onto Gothic Architecture as an insult because in those days the only appropriate architecture was Roman based. Then Gothic Architecture got tacked onto Gothic Literature because they were the general setting for most of the stories. Those stories led to horror films of the 20's to 40's ish which added to modern Goth
@JaneAsterisk You've wrong, the gothic movement emerged in response to a repression that the miners were in Norway and painted their faces white and pretending to be dead black dress to reflect the sadness that they lived at that time. It isn't something that is limited to one race indeed.

Great video Sebastian. I'm glad you talked about this. There are a few kids at my school who are black they aren't Goth but a little "alternative" I guess. The other black kids will say things like "You actin' white". This of course makes them want to stay away from black people. Then you hang out with the white kids and they say things like "Omg I've never seen a black person who is so white". I don't have these problems but my other friends do. It's just annoying. I feel for em!
race is just a made up social concept, there is actually no scientific background in the concept of race. There's ethnicity, which deals with culture and location But Race is just a way mankind decided to classify other humans that looked different from them. So i think its a rather ridiculous concept, even to the point when your filling out paper work you have to fill out your race.... when really what you look like and what you identify your self as ethic wise is two totally different things.
I always thought Goth was just for white people until I saw this. I'm not any of the races you mentioned. I'm Cuban and Italian.

I'm a black woman. I have received bad treatment from the goth and punk scene because of my race. I met a deathrock guy who was "amused" at me knowing so much about music. I was at a hardcore punk gig when some idiot tapped me on the shoulder to ask who I was there to see since I didn't "look" like others there. Mind you the only thing that was different about me was my skin color. That's why I'm so grateful for the afropunk documentary. It let me know I'm not alone in my experiences. :)

I moved to a predominately African American town a couple years ago, and a lot of random people (black and white) that I met on the street would whistle and say stuff like "I like me a lady in black" "is it hard to keep your skin that white?" and stuff like that. I was so offended, but then met and befriended a black goth... and she had it soo much harder! it made me feel bad for being so easily offended. she takes it with so much grace, tho... i'm jealous :)

I agree 100% Although I fall more into the metalhead category, there is a prime example in my case too: Lajon Witherspoon is black and many said he couldn't be a successful metal singer, but that didn't stop him from touring the country and selling out open air shows in Sevendust.

Saying Goth is a white people thing is like saying that pizza is a black people thing. It makes virtually no sense. Yes, there are many white people in the Goth scene but so what. I hear the same issue in the metal community. It's more rare that a black person listens to metal but when they do I think it's wonderful. We have alot of hispanic people in the Metal and Goth scene so I don't see the big problem. :D

More than likely, other goths of color won't even register the fact that you're white and therefore won't think you're judging or anything of the like. You don't need to feel nervous! We're just like any other goths, we come from different walks of life and different ancestral backgrounds and even though we may not fit the stereotype of goth, skin color-wise (stereotypes are terrible anyway), we share more in common than not. I'm a person of color and goth (I'm indigenous/mexican). You said you feel nervous talking around other goths of color. I just want to say that first of all, it's very considerate and shows how bright and conscious you are of the racial (and perhaps class) discrepancies in the subculture and the animosity that may exist because of it, instead of just blatantly saying "wow a dark goth!1!" like others may say to us. But you do not have to feel nervous around us :)

DNA wise race doesnt exist, every humans DNA is 99% identical to everyones in the world, the skin is colored by the area of the earth a group of humans appeared closer to the equater the darker the skin, a natural sun screen and its b/c ik this i ignore race completely b/c its a social thing we as a species have came up with, i think a girl with rich coacoa colored skin in a black corset and lace with her hair pinned up victorian era styled is beautiful, just an example...

I live in Germany, and I've met quite a lot of Asian goths and several black ones. I used to be in love with a Japanese goth girl, and a friend of mine's a black goth from England. But for some reason, Turkish goths are really, really rare - I know only two.

I live in Toronto, Canada, the most multicultural city in the world...and we still have this problem within the goth community. It sickens me! I have friends of all races and all style choices, goth and not, and you'd think in a city with so many different races and mixes (I'm Native American and white) we'd be more accepting in the goth community. I'm Asian and I'm a Goth, yet some people think only white people can be Goth. I also used to get comments on how I'm not a "true Goth" because I never "invaded the Roman Kingdom" (Does that even make sense to you?) and because I'm always happy and smiling. That's really offensive and annoying, personally. I used to let some many people put me down because of their stupid comments, but I'm confident now and I'm like, "FORGET YOU!" to those people and their comments. I'm ME, not THEM.

Because of this very "crude" attack, the name was tacked onto Gothic Architecture as an insult because in those days the only appropriate architecture was Roman based. Then Gothic Architecture got tacked onto Gothic Literature because they were the general setting for most of the stories. Those stories led to horror films of the 20's to 40's ish which added to modern Goth

best is to say hello, and complement the on some pretty they are wearing . and leave it at that.
its just pointed out to them that you know they are a different in some way. but saying how proud you are.
if any one asks me i usually say "we bleed the same and we die the same. our hearts stop and the last breath is left. what is different about that."

Great video Sebastian. I'm glad you talked about this. There are a few kids at my school who are black they aren't Goth but a little "alternative" I guess. The other black kids will say things like "You actin' white". This of course makes them want to stay away from black people. Then you hang out with the white kids and they say things like "Omg I've never seen a black person who is so white". I don't have these problems but my other friends do. It's just annoying. I feel for em!

race is just a made up social concept, there is actually no scientific background in the concept of race. There's ethnicity, which deals with culture and location But Race is just a way mankind decided to classify other humans that looked different from them. So i think its a rather ridiculous concept, even to the point when your filling out paper work you have to fill out your race.... when really what you look like and what you identify your self as ethic wise is two totally different things.
