i have a 1970 chevy c-20, 307, 3 on the column, however it doesnt have a tackometer, does anyone know what rpms these run in 3rd gear going about 55? please let me know. thanks!
@39700101 it would depend on what gear ratio you have, my truck^^^ has a 3.08 ratio so it cruises at 2400 rpm @ 60 mph. all these old trannys have a 1:1 top gear so it does not matter if you have a 3 or 4 speed trans as far as the cruise speed is concerned.
@bcm12079 we run this engine up to 6000 rpm cause that is when it basically runs out of power. this combination of parts runs very well from 2500-6000rpm,,,,,,,,,it will wind up to 6500 but it dont pull the truck well. to go faster it would need more compression and a bigger camshaft.
@garry99ish the purpose of the different first gears is to compensate for the different rear axle ratios,,, the high first gear transmissions are better for use with a lower axle ratio ie. (2.20 1st gear likes a 3.73and lower axle) and the lower first gear or lowest saginaw 1st is the 3.50 and it is useless with any thing lower than 3.42 and it prefers a 3.08 or 2.73, other wise first gear will be like a "granny gear" and you would do nothing but spin out.
@sonic911 nope not at all. I like driving 3 on column, something you dont see much and will never see again from the factory, kinda like T-tops, floor starters, and huge fins.
@MrChevelle83 haha its funny u say that because the way i found out about this was a web page on things that you wont find on cars anymore..actually you see targa tops on a lot of sports/ super cars now
@garry99ish No and yes,,,,, the rear is the factory 3.08 12 bolt, and the transmission is a saginaw 3 speed. that particular trans has a 2.84 first gear which combined with the 6000 RPM shift makes for quite some speed in first gear. I think it will run about 30mph or so (speedo is not accurate)

@UprightsRule895 it is a 355 ci with flat top pistons, also has a set of the summit racing cast iron heads (they are excellent for the money!!) Edelbrock rpm intake, rebuilt quadrajet carburator I used a lunati #00016 cam (older grind) the newer voodoo grinds are a step better
headders, turn down exhaust with flow master the truck is now a 4 speed and a blast to drive!!
What is the milege in the gears and how is the rpm goin whent u shift

@MrChevelle83 i beleive its 4:11 ratio so how would i do the math to find out what my rpms are?

That's Badass. There's something so much cooler about a column shift.

so which would you describe for a slightly top end modified 350? the 2.85 first gear? or 2.54?

i feel like that would be more of a pain in the ass than a normal shifter....i guess thats what was on those old mustang fast backs

Is that the factory tranny and rear end? My 78 chevy 3 peed goes no where near that fast in 1st and 2nd! About 10 in first and 20 in second!
