I moved there from Lisburn when I was 4. Started out in Legahory and then Drumglass circa 1972. Went to Tullygally primary school. Craigavon only went to shit when thugs started vandalizing the empty brand new homes that were unoccupied. It could have been a good place. It is what you make of it. Every home in Drumglass was occupied and so it was a pleasant place, but Legahory which was just across the road was known for trouble.
I grew up caigavon,my whole life, I have a Masters degree and I am now a journalist, living and working in London, I am also a freelance foreign correspondent am married and am a Muslim!!!!!! I've been to Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Columbia, Brazil etc and Craigavon is not so bad. People get trapped in their own minds, not their home towns. I understand your point though.
Nice one glad to hear you're doing well where did you live?? The real point I am making here is what many people don't realise. Craigavon is certainly not the worst place to grow up. My point is that we often put up with bad conditions by comparing them to other places and therefore make 'bad' acceptable.
It's kinda subtle but many people don't catch it because they focus on the fact I am talking about a particular place when in reality this could be anywhere.
I understand your stress because I was stuck in one of the poorest and most dangerous parts of my city about 15 years ago. After being attacked twice in the lobby of my building I decided that I had to get out of there, and thankfully I did. The whole area was rampant with crime, drugs, thieves, and whores !
I sympathize with you, but it is really the quality of residents and their behaviour that make a community worth living in or NOT. Is it not possible to move to a better area, or say, County Kerry ?
I did move to somewhere worse!!! Moving is not the point the point is that in a modern western society with more than enough wealth to go round that places like these even exist.
I agree, but these deplorable situations are not going to change anytime soon. If I were stuck in a pile of shite, I 'd move as far as I had to to change my circumstances. I myself am poor, but I am miles happier than all the more affluent people I know. I think a lot of "poverty" is just a state of mind.
Denial?Dillusional? Good and bad exist side by side, concenrating on the positive,is that wrong? You look at run down areas in your poem thats only a tiny part of Craigavon, maybe take another look!!!
Thats a pretty depressing vision you have of your home town, its not all bad here in craigavon, its tense at the minute, murder and riots but hey things can only get better, we have to believe that!!
It's not all bad didn't say that but if we continually look at what little good there is the bad gets forgotten. You can't pretend that the porblems I highlighted are not there. I am for addressing these problems rather than pretending everything is nice which seems to be most peoples way, it's called denial.
One other thing everyone seems to be going around with their heads in the clouds believing that "things can only get better" you can believe that all you like but this place has been the way it is since day one during the troubles and when there was no trouble as well. Being optimistic is one thing but not looking at the facts while being optimistic is nothing short of dillusional.
Load a bull.
