PC= Un-intuitive crash monster trying desperately to be a MAC. It is ancient tech being tarted up to a uninformed consumer. Yes it's cheap, a cheap POS! Clunky, uninspired, low tech, non innovative pile.
someone mentioned hackintoshs before which is a cool alternative. But the one thing that steered me away from pc's & hackintoshs for music production is that I just find macs are far better when it comes to i/o for music gear plus 0 latency. Sure you can get pc's with 0 latency too but when daisy chaining all my hardware and sending midi msgs via max/msp and other sequencers things get messy real fast on my pc. In the end macs are just alot easier for the type of stuff I wanna do with music!
I built my own PC and it will shit all over any Mac Pro. I have a 4.5 Ghz over clocked 4 core (8 Virtual threads). 8 Gb of 2133 Mhz DDR3. And a 1 TB HDD for $1400. You'd have to spend at least twice that much on a Mac to get those kinds of specs. That's why PC is superior. Price VS performance. And if you actually know what you're doing. Your pc wont crash.
Buying a Mac for music production? I would stay away from pre-Intel macs. Don't get me wrong, Macs are Grrrreat! But it's all about logical, sensible investments. Why you may ask? Well, if you purchase a great pre-intel G4/G5 you may not get support if something goes wrong with software/hardware issues. And most software out there supports Macs newer intel chips rather than older...on the other hand. If budget is a concern than I'd buy a G5 & use compatible, older software to get the job done.
@pitolove71 the best and most intelligent idea would be buying a win 7 pc. better price, better performance, more plugins... and 100% stable if you know what you are doing. just morons buy macs today
@Moemors Tell me, why should someone "know what they're doing" to have a computer work? That is such a load of rubbish. Musicians should not have to know how to fix their computer to make it work. I am not saying this from the point of view from someone who doesn't know computers, either. I know both Mac and PC proficiently. I will choose Mac over PC as I spend more time recording and less time "knowing what I am doing" i.e. fixing and setting up to work right, services, background processes, etc
@dentunes there is no big deal about this IMHO. the only issue u can get on win 7 is when older external hardware is not supported with drivers, or if your not able to protect your pc properly. besides that the best way would however be not use ur music pc for internet tasks. you should inform yourself about such things before a buy, if u dont want to do that you can pay double price for less specs. its your choice.
@Moemors If you were to not use your music computer for the internet, you would have to then have two computers which negates your argument that you pay twice as much. Inform myself? lol. Funny stuff. The price of a computer is not simply that amount you pay when you walk into the shop and hand over your credit card. Until people understand that, they will continue to use PCs.
@Moemors Where are PCs with Thudnerbolt? iMacs with Core i7s and Sandy Bridge were released May 2011, Intel released Sandy Bridge January 2011. I don't see a 2 year gap there. Apple computers are not 2 year old "white pcs" at twice the price of normal pcs. I would prefer to have one computer to do the lot, which I have and it does it well.
@dentunes what the heck should i use a thunderbolt for music production? i dont wanna know the price of a mac pro that ressemles the one of a equal pc system... thats just ridiculous. there is a reason why over 90% on this planet are windows users, even when apple fanboys say its shit or whatever. the most intelligent way is to build a hackintosh if u really want osx. if u have enough money to kick out for a shiny mac, like i said, i dont mind. If we are both happy its all good
@Moemors Umm, check out Universal Audio Apollo. You know Universal Audio? Or maybe the MOTU HDX-SDI. Both are thunderbolt devices. And before you tell me the Apollo is Firewire as well, the plug in count is higher through thunderbolt. Oh hang on, this is new technology. I guess if one uses 2 year old technology there isn't a need for thunderbolt.
@dentunes very true, I have both pc's and mac's and my pc's always crash and burn sooner or later whereas my mac runs on strong. I guess it could be because when I'm on a pc I'm more likely to do suspect interneting, not sure on the real answer. But in the end macs are very reliable. The only problem I have with my mac at the moment is some unusual white dots / stars that appear all over the screen?
@Moemors not true, I've had numerous hardware problems with pc's that were out of my control. Never had a hardware problem with a mac. And don't get me started on software issues with pc. In the end they're both great so idk why you're so anti mac.
@Moemors You know...until recently I used a pentium 4, 2 gb of ram, 100 gb hard drive & ran Reason & Reaper w/sound toys, t-racks, etc plug-ins. Never had a crash. It would slow down on me at times & would get high DSP but for a desktop w/those specs? IT was actually great. Been using mac but now I'm limited! Looking into a Windows 7, Lenovo, Samsung, or Asus professional laptop with an intel i7cpu & upgrade internals; 8-16 gb ram & SSD w/ external HD. What's your opinion?
@pitolove71 thats a good choice for sure. pc give you a great value for the money. just make sure u have a 64bit win7 and look if ur external hardware, if u have, is supported with native win 7 drivers also 64bit. inform youself in the net about that properly before buying and you cant go wrong IMHO. greez
can i ask you what spec you mac/pc is, i've had issues running instances of mpx as it's really greedy, ive heard pc's run more plugins so im thinking of swithching back to pc
hey man, I see that there is little CPU usage considering you're running all of those MPX's, what computer do you have? I have a Early 2008 Mac Pro 8 Core with 3GHZ CPU's and 4GB of ram, do you think I will be able to run these much plugins? thanks!
TSAR-1...From little demos that I could find online it seems to have quite a bit of character. Would be interesting how it stands in the mix. So you rate it above Sonnox, I can see that, but what about in relation to something like Relab 480L?
Love your videos. I am a subscriber and fond of all the videos you have made. I noticed you have many different plugins and all of them are top quality. I would love to get your opinion a la Pensado's batters box style on what your favorite plugins are for EQ and Compression on a variety of different instruments. So what are you favorites? eq first then compression? kick- snare- toms- room- overheads- bass- electric guitars- acoustic guitars- vocals- console/tape sat- Wanna Play Batters Box?
@wizprodux Great! You like that focusrite eq a lot, ya? Is that the d2 d3 or midnight? I am assuming the fairchild is the waves one right? I was surprised no ssl comp on the buss?
First of all Forgive me I don't use pro tools I use logic. Are the red channels aux channels? Did you buss the blue channels over to the red channels and then return them to the blue?
@videoeditors Not really, since at Unity Gain everything is off balance. Besides, the war of loosing bits when moving the fader is no longer relevant.
I'm working on a song right now where I set MPX for acoustic guitars to 7.5ips and when you crank up the high's on the Trident it sounds sweet.... not exactly clean, but definitely ANALOG
@wizprodux yeah the eq really made the mix sound great, much more glued together. i imagine it would be mostly to do with how you used it rather than the plug itself. the other plugs i only noticed a small difference although i'm only listening to the track on the 360p setting.
do you find that the sound of the eq is changed much with the other plugs in front of it?
the decapitator and mpx seem to me to smoothing the highs, compressing and adding mild distortion by varying degrees.
Interesting enough, it's almost like the song mixes itself when ran through the console/tape combo. Needless to say, they are CPU hungry and would probably not make this chain my default workflow.
I bought the MPX last night but had some issues with iLok or something. Hopefully it works today. Cool video. Question, would you normally use Decapitator like this in place of something like VCC? I've only been using Decapitator to augment VCC, but the results sound pretty nice in this.

@lilmrdr The Blue Channels on the left are Audio Tracks, containing the originally recorded tracks.
The Red Channels on the right are Aux Tracks receiving that audio and processing it through the Decapitator and EQ.

Haven't used the VCC, but the concept is the "analog" signal flow. Audio through the console > tape; back to console > eq
