I never thought of him as a drunk, no more than a college student anyways. He was sorta created to explain madness... but in the Percy Jackson series if not in other forms of work, he was able to cure that madness as well.

Wine making (and other forms of alcohol) have a science to it all. Also back in those days, alcohol could be use as a sort of medicine. Though not sure if wine was ever use. So over all theory it still holds.
