  • I just uploaded a video of my problem. Using your instructions I had the whole thing apart. My color wheel looks to be in better shape than yours did, but it does not spin at all like your broken one. I know you did not test the spinning of your new one. I don;t want to replace my color wheel if it is the ballast or something else...any thoughts after watching my video respons?

  • Thanks a million man - I'd been procrastinating doing this install for months but finally sat down with your videos tonight and got it working on the first try!

  • Can you tell me if the color wheel should spin easily or should there be some resistance? I removed my color wheel but it looks likes its in good shape, the only thing is its hard to spin. Thanks for the videos by the way.

  • @702clark Hi - The color wheel should move very easily. They are supposed to spin at some superfast RPM. If you think it spins hard, it probably needs replacing. The bearings are probably going bad and that is why it is spinning hard. That is typical.

  • @hexagontaginal Thanks so much for your help. I installed the color wheel and got everything back together however the color is totally out of whack. I did not remove the jumper but I am wondering if I should have. Do you have any suggestions. Youre video was very helpful and informative and also saved me lots of money!!

  • @hexagontaginal Hi 702. I would try pulling the jumper.

  • Thanks man for the awesome help from your videos! Took me 2 tries, I had the ribbon cable in the wrong direction. The contacts should be facing out towards the back of the TV to line up properly with the contacts. I wish I had seen this video before trying to replace what I thought was a bulb problem. Turns out it was the color wheel. Luckily I had bought one a few years ago, but I dropped 60 bucks on a new bulb. Oh well now I have an extra.

  • I can't thank you enough for your videos. If it wasn't for you, I'd be buying a new tv! You saved me atleast $1000. First I thought it was the #2 fan. So I used your video to get at the fan and replace it. Unfortunately, it was the color wheel. I just finished installing a new color wheel. You're a lifesaver! (a tv lifesaver!).

  • I had the same issue of after replacing and re-assembling, the TV had all 3 lights flashing and the TV switching itself on and off. I took the advice above to flip the ribbon cable and now everything works fine. I'd suggest as you put in the ribbon cable you look at the way the old one went in - If you look at it carefully you will notice the cable has 2 different sides.

Good luck and thenks to the original poster - an amazing gift to the community.

  • Great directions...successful installation!!

  • I love my 61 samsung DLP. Followed your instructions and made a couple of the mistakes you made. Put everything back together and hit the power button....

Lamp light blinks along with red timer light. The lamp does not light up in back. After it tries to restart a second time, it shuts down and all three lights blink. I took it apart again and checked for loose cables like you did but nothing. I have two bulbs and tried both and nothing. What can it be???

  • Awesome video!!! This totally helped me get it done!!! Thanks!!

  • Success! Thanks for this video! One thing to others reading this comment, make sure the silver side of the weird gold ribbon cable is facing out. I had it the wrong way.

  • @keshatl just what i was trying to figure out, thanks, is the cover supposed to keep the ribbon & cable inside of it, or is the cable & ribbon to be exposed out of the cover

  • You sir are a saint and a scholar!!! You instructions were perfect and my TV worked first time. The parts company even sent the wrong part (which I didn't discover until I removed the color wheel) so my TV was apart for 2 weeks before I could continue and your re-assembly instructions got me right back in the mix. The only clarification I would make is explaining that the ribbon cable exposed connections need to face left as you look at the color wheel and slip the cable in.

  • Execlent video. Serously I cant thank you enough!!!!!!

  • Thanks for this video to replace a samsung color wheel. It was precise and easy to follow. Just one thing when I plugged it in the colors were way off. It was like a posterization with shadows. I checked for other comments and found the jumper needed to be removed. You did remove it on the video, but the screen said that you didn't need to remove it. Well after I removed the cable it worked perfectly. Thanks again it saved me alot of money!

  • Thank you for you time and effort to make this video series. You have saved my hundreds.

  • I took the TV apart again and after checking on the color wheel, I decided the odd ribbon cable was in backwards. Reassembled the TV and now it's perfect. BTW: I'm female and damned proud of myself today!!

Again, fantastic series you did! You're awesome.

  • I replaced my color wheel last night and during the process I pulled a cable connector off around the second video. It's the cable connector to the right of the DVI cable. I was able to straighten out the pins and reconnect the cable. Now when I turn the TV on, the lamp light is flashing. I don't hear any more noise but I also am not getting any picture. Any suggestions?

    Great video series, BTW! Thanks!

  • Just wanted to say thanks as well for taking the time to make these videos, had same model TV as you my color wheel had shattered, followed your steps to swap it out, at first the lamp would not come on and the lamp light just blinked, so I took it back apart and flipped the ribbon cable, put it back together and worked like a charm, I also did not need to flip the bearing jumper. Thanks again.

  • thanks for your help, i did it! or should i say we did it...lol

    much appreciated.

  • thanks for your help, i did it! or should i say we did it...lol

    much appreciated

  • great instructions. Thank you

  • Great job on the video! I followed it step by step - but the colors were way off. The TV looked like it had built in posterization - colors, shadows were all off. I tore the TV apart two more times - all with the same results. The third time I opened it up I removed the jumper for the "Air Bearings" and the picture is perfect.

  • Hi,

Great vid. Very informative going in but unfortunately I ran into a few troubles putting it back together. The video is not very clear on which screws lock the color wheel in place so now I only have the one screw that I could fit in (which Im sure is not the safest way). Also I don't see u putting the lamp back in the video. I have tried but the back cover will not lock onto the lamp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Thanks for the instructions saved me $210. The Shop wanted $350 to fix it, got the part for $85 and paid the shop $50 for looking at it. Great video.

  • Thank you so much! My relatives were going to throw out this tv and I said that i might be able to fix it! I got a $700 tv for the price of the part, about $100, My kids are going to love it I was amazed it was that easy! Murphy"s Law wasn"t an issue. Thanks again!

  • Thanks for taking the time to video and upload this process - was extremely helpful - got my tv working again thanks to you.

  • I can't thank you enough. If you hadn't taken the time and made the effort to film the replacement of your color wheel, I don't know if I would've attempted to fix/replace it myself.

The good news is that this worked like a charm!

The bad news is that I think I had my wife talked into getting a 3D TV. Oh well, 3D will have to wait for the time being.

    Seriously, though, thanks so much.

  • Instructions worked well, ran in to a problem during installation. I ordered the Incorrect color wheel part there is 2 different part numbers for my 50 inch sammy dlp. So i pulled the old color wheel out of the old holder and swapped in the new one from the new part into the old holder. put the tv back together and it works like a charm. Also saved me $ because the correct part was 50$ more.

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial!!! i appreciate the time you took to create it. The only suggestion I have for future users of the tutorials are:

    1. Make sure the bare side of the ribbon from the color wheel is matched up with the contact points in the slot; and

    2. Make sure you place the back cover with the lamp cover back on before you turn it on. Otherwise it won't turn on. It does not have to be screwed in but just on.

Lastly do you have a paypal account? i would like to make a gift

  • Success!!!!! I had the ribbon cable in the coin-looking slot rather than into the connector. Need to stick to my day job.

Thank you for your effort. We will speak thy name forever more.

  • Thanks for your efforts. Spent a few hours with you last night but no success in getting the tv to work. No picture, and tv turns off and on. Can you tell me what you missed the first couple of times you tried before you were successful.

    Signed,

    Future Samsung Repair Man

  • @smbrenner Hi - Check and make sure that the ribbon cable that just kind of gets jammed into the connector isn't reversed. Also, when you are turning the TV back on is the back of the TV back on? If the back of the set isn't back on the TV won't turn on - there is a switch that the back of the set holds down and if that switch isn't depresed the TV won't turn on.

  • Thanks for taking the time to videotape and upload this. I don't need to change my color wheel yet, but your help gives me the confidence to do it myself and save a couple of hundred bucks in the process. Saw your vid on Leo Carillo camping. My family and I love to go there, too. My kids love the camp store and the tide pools. Anyway...thanks again!

  • I am a 100% Disabled Veteran, and I am inside more than I like to be. Well, you can imagine how I pass the time. I sister was given one of these televisions, from a friend because of the "noise". My brother-in-law changed the fans, heat sinks, and lamp...but still the "noise". So, I have inherited it. I opened the panel, saw the fans, and I know they do not make any noise, years of playing rock and roll, and using them to cool Marshall amps. I know now what to fix, and how. Thank You!!!!!

  • HELLO.. I HAVE THE TOSHIBA 56HM16 THE PROBLEM WHIT MI TV IS AFTER 50 MINUTES TO STAR LOSE THE COLOR SOMEONE TOLDME ABOUT DIJITAL BOARD ANOTHER PEOPLE TOLDME ABOUT THE MAIN BOARD IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING APPRECIATE THANKS

  • The video was really helpful with the dis-assembly and reassembly of the components. Probably saved a few hundred bucks in labor cost. Thanks for posting this.

  • I had the 3 lights flashing on the on/off button so I replaced my bulb, but I am still getting the loud buzzing noise when I turn on the TV. I read on Samsung.com that it could be the cooling fan or the color wheel. How do I know whether it's one or the other or both? I would hate to replace one and it still do it. Can you advise?

  • @dk4JC It probably isn't the cooling fan. Those fans are pretty much just regular computer fans (or at least mine were). Open the TV up and take a look is the only way to know.

  • @hexagontaginal Yeah I did that yesterday thanks to your great instructions and guess what I found? My color wheel was shattered in half!! How it happened I have no idea. My guess is that the TV got moved while it was on and the vibration caused the color wheel to spin off balance and hit something and then crack and eventually shatter after so many turns on and off. Unbelievable! I am getting my new wheel in two days and I will be watching your video to reinstall the new one. Thanks!

  • @dk4JC A few people have commented on here that their color wheels have shattered like that. It seems like just something that can happen.

  • Awesome video man. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. It was very straight forward. However, of course, I don't think I did everything right.

When I turn the TV on....I just get the red standby light with the Lamp light blinking. Should I replace the lamp as well? I had the buzz saw noise for a while & then the humming. That went on for a week or so & then it just stop coming on.

My guess is that....the lamp is out too, or a cable wasn't put back correctly. Any thoughts

  • @NathanIVV Check the manual for the red standby light and lamp light blinking means. You might have just not seated your buld correctly or it might need replacing but I would start with the manual and decoding the light.

  • @hexagontaginal An update. Decided instead of taking a nap....I would give it another try. And for some reason when I was putting it back together...just knew i had it right. And when I turned it on...it was eerily quiet. Success! I laughed when at the end of the last video when you said that you had to take it apart a couple of times!!! It's amazing how easy it is once you do it once.

  • thanks so much that jumper thing had me stumped! if you dn't remove it for our same model tvs the screen colors are way off. Great job:-)

  • Amazing work to put something like this on youtube to share with others. I used this video to replace the color wheel for my HLP4663w samsung 46" tv. No issues and got my job done within 2 hrs. One comment I need to make is that I didn't had to remove the color wheel housing holder plate.I was able to install color wheel without removing the plate anyways. No color adjustments needed after the part replacement.

The instructional video works like a charm!!! ThankYou.

  • You are the bomb! Followed your instructions and just finished replacing the color wheel....It works! Seriously, THANK YOU so much for taking the time to put these videos together. Can't thank you enough sir!

  • Worked like a charm. Thanks for the videos!

  • This was a great. I watched it first then decided to buy the colorwheel. I had a background hum but not the "grinding" yet. Then I came home today after work and the wife said the tv was making a sound like a chainsaw. So I followed your series and was able to make the changeout in less than 2 hours. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

  • After replacing my color wheel thdark shades looked blurry and had a greenish hue to them. Anyone have any idea why? Is there anything else I have to do after completeing the install? I tried adjusting the color many times. Thanks

  • Thank you for replay Now My TV is working fine and without making any buzzing noise thank you very much for saying money around 300 $ in these hard economy

  • Sir I follow your video whole video but after replacing the color wheel my green light in the power button keeping flashing and every after 20 sec Tv power back on but no picture plz help me

  • @bynumezshop You need to look in your owners manual and see what the code for the power button flash is. That will tell you more about what is wrong. It could be the seating of your lamp. You can read the comment thread and I think a couple of people have had a similar issue but they have worked through it.

  • my samsung hlr6167wax/xaa wont turn on

  • this was a huge help when I had to do the same thing for my DLP today. Thanks a whole lot for putting this together.

  • This whole thing worked like a dream. Thank you so much. Plus, I see you posted an Uli video which makes you cool x 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @naschy43 Ah, another Uli fan! Uli is great!

  • How do you know if you need to take out the jumper. I believe I did everything correct but I get a flashing Lamp light with the jumper out. The book states that this means the tv should have picture in about 15 seconds but nothing ever happen. No fans move and there seem to be lack of power to back. With the jumper in, get the flashing lights which tell me the lamp is not seated correctly, which i have checked numerous times. Any help? Thanks in advance.

  • @MrSkohlmorgen If the color is all messed up than the jumper needs pulled. The jumper wouldn't be your issue if the set isn't coming on at all. Did you put the back of the TV back on? The TV won't turn on without the back on (unless you rig up the switch to trick the TV).

  • Thanks so much for the video. The replacement went flawlessly. The back of the TV was indeed incorrectly seated and when I corrected the problem the TV came right on. No more grinding noise. I haven't checked the image yet but will keep the jumper information in mind if the color is messed up.

One question, do the lamps quit all at once in these DLP's all do they start to get dim. Thanks again, you are a life, as well as a wallet saver.

  • @MrSkohlmorgen Hi! Glad that it worked out!

When my lamp died it went all at once.

  • Vids were perfect...I followed them along with my own notes and had no probs! Well...did have one issue on the first try - had the power (the orange/black cable) to the color wheel backwards - so I had to take it apart again and have the metal strips facing the back of the set. Turned it on and picture is like new! Saved me about $1500 on a new tv - hopefully I get another good 5-6 years out of my DLP...THANK YOU!!!

  • After I replaced the color wheel the alignment on the picture was off (there was about 3 inches of black strip above and below the picture). How do I fix that? Thanks so much for the detailed videos!

  • @Phils1021 I have never heard of that. I wouldn't think it would be related to the color wheel.

  • @Phils1021 google search "light tunnel" It needs to be adjusted.

  • Great instructions! I have a 42" Samsung DLP and just changed my colorwheel using your videos. Went without a hitch! Thank you very much for posting these videos.

  • YOU RULE! I bought this model TV on craigslist and did the repair myself. Kudos to you and your video's. This repair was as easy as you made it look. I had to pull the jumper on mine but I was sure glad you had mentioned it in your video. Thank You Greatly!!

  • thank you so much for the video!

i did exactly that, and got rid of the noise, but the color got all weird. Do you know what the problem is , by any chance?

  • Sounds like you probably need to pull the jumper.

  • kudos my friend!!!!! the video was a lifesaver and saved me from buyi ng a new t.v!!! THANKS MAN!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the information. Watching the color wheel being replaced via video is much easier than reading it on the website. This is the type of video that is perfect for YouTube! Informative, helpful, and straight-forward. Thanks again!

  • PERFECT. Thanks Sir! Worked like a charm. Thank you ,thank you. Now we can enjoy our 67 in Samsung DLP 1080p once again!

  • Commented before thanking you for posting the video. I received my color wheel in the mail today and jumped back online to watch you install the color wheel. A bit worried once I got it put back together that I might have missed a step but the first plugin the tv came on perfect. Thanks again!!

    Ryan

  • Dude, you the man. I saw the pictures on the internet. But there was nothing like having your video. Tried without the jumper and colors were messed up. Followed your solution and what do you know. Ebay + YouTube = $125 for repair instead of $500. You the man!

  • 52" back on line. Thank You! I will buy you a beer in some realm of our existence.

    Woody in AK

  • Dude you are my idol. How did you know for sure it was the color wheel and not the fan? I had a humming noise, not real loud, but noticable. Then the tv stopped working and I got the flahing 'bulb' indicator... Looking for a test to determine whether its the cw or the fan...whaddathink?

  • @bidiller Did you get a response? I am having simillar problems and not sure on how to verify the problem.

  • If you look in the owners manual there is a section that tells you what the different blinking light combinations mean.

  • Thanks, I did see that athough the manual stated that the error is in result to a bad lamp. Yet I dont think the lamp would make a high ring noise. so Im stumped.

  • Hi,

What model Samsung DLP is this? I have a HLP5053W. How do you know whether to remove the jumper? You did not need to add service menu codes for the color wheel?

  • Great step by step instructions !!!! Took less than an hour . My color wheel was smashed in to tiny pieces. Thank you very much.

  • How long does the bulb last on one of these?

  • I think my first bulb lasted a two or three years. The buld I'm on now has been going for a year and a half. I suppose it depends on how much TV you watch. My TV gets a lot of use (2 kids)

  • I replaced the color wheel without cursing a single time. That's big for me. Usually my wife has to leave the house because I get crazy. Great post!!! Thanks man.

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you. Very simple instructions and completed it without any problems. Tried turning it on without the plastic back no luck then screwed all 14 on and bam new tv.

  • I cannot thank you enough!!! You saved me about $400 and I GREATLY appreciate it!!!!! Hopefully, the good Lord above is paying you back! :)

  • That was awesome! I followed you step by step without written instructions. The only step that was tricky was connecting the ribbon cable from the color wheel to the pressure fit connector. It was awkward and I kept thinking I didn't put it in enough or put it in the wrong way. Finally I used a long nose plier and gently pushed it in as far as I could. Great video,,, I appreciate you saving me $400.

  • Glad it worked for you!

I totally agree on the ribbon cable. It is a weird cable that you basically just shove in the slot and then it works.

  • I repeat what everyone else has said. Thank you!!!! This was so helpful. We replaced our color wheel last night and you took a lot of the guesswork and confusion out of it. Thanks again.

  • This was very helpful. Your TV is more similar to mine than other instructional images I have seen. This video made it a breeze for me to replace the color-wheel. Thanks a lot!

  • Great video,i think its the color wheel thats making a grinding noise on my Toshiba DLP.But it still works ok so i havent fixed it.I guess i could try warranty first anyway.

  • Thank u so much man...Couldn't have done it without you..

  • could you show the jumper part or discribe it a little better, we had been trying to get that part but can't find the jumper everyone talks about and our color is backward, blue red /red blue

    thanks stroudrg

  • Great job the only thing I would have done differntly is ,I would have put the thing on a table .I got tired just watching you on the floor. ps I am a TV tech.

  • Thanks. This helped not so much for the disassembly, but I had to wait 1 1/2 weeks for the part and forgot what exactly I had to do for reassembly, so this helped a lot.

  • Great Samsung Color Wheel Replacement, can you do one on the light Tunnel, replacement and alignment? Your videos explain in great length. Thanks Again

  • I don't know anything about the light tunnel. I didn't have to do anything to mine.

  • I know, But you did such a great job on the Samsung Color wheel, I was just wonering if you had any more on the Samsung DLP you had to do. The Video Saved Me around $400.00, as I called a TV repair in my area, and they said it would be around $500.00 to do this repair, minus the Color Wheel of $95.00. Great Job and Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • Outstanding video. Worked perfectly the first time with no redo. Thanks for taking the time.
