The true mark of a great pop tune is that you can play it with a band, a piano, a solo guitar... Was this guy a towering talent? Or is it just my personal taste? Every song has a few departures from the rules that I take to be the work of genius.
I'd like to hear a comeback from this guy, maybe with the production toned down to let the songs take front stage. But does anyone listen to just "songs" anymore?
For fans of Marshall Cranshaw His new album Jaggedland will be released on June 2, 2009. Go to the 429records website for more info and to hear tracks.
I heard Gin Blossums play this song about 9 years ago and it stuck in my head and until now finally heard who the real writer was. Adds the the gentlemans comments below, this guy is AWESOME, guess I'm glad to be a late member of the somewhat obscure (sp?) fan club!
I love this song. I like the radio version better. I didn't know the name of the song until now. I always thought he was saying "someday subway" like a guy always eats at burger king and he thinks about changing his mind and thinks "someday subway"!!!
He has recorded so many great songs that he has written. Too bad his music doesn't sell. Because of this i guess we dont get to see him with a band that often. He is incredible with a band.
The Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon. Are you ready? You can be! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Behold the Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon! Call upon the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be ready!
That was phenomenal. When it comes right down to it, all the ingredients are there: brilliant songwriter, great song, straight-forward performance. Thanks for sharing this.
He actually wrote the song for Robert Gordon and Danny Gatton. They are spectacular. It really jumps. They did it live on sctv which used to be on Youtube. maybe some copywrite problem forced it off.
I LOVED their version & have searched for a recording; couldn't find - RG, yes, but not w/ DG. I lived in D.C. bitd & saw DG, RG, Evan Johns, sometimes some of them playing together - a wonderful time in music/history.
He's coming to perform at The Kate in Old Saybrook, CT if you anyone is in the area. Thekate.org!!! See you then

Great delivery on thsi tune, si devoid of teen angst but still feels like pure pop/rock a la Buddy Holly. Classic stuff.
Marshall, wherever you are, I'e rediscovered you. Gotta get the new 2009 album - songwriting and sound is clear as a bell.

He was John Lennon in Beatlemania.

It's more like he was a singer-songwriter who had a few fairly small acting roles.

I saw a little show with MC for record execs in the mid 80's. It was rocking!

Justis Marshall and his guitar,
so simple, so beautiful.
And his voice sounds great,
like he is in your living room.
Playing from his heart,
and it is touching.
---Cheers (thanks jackynjimy!)
