Talent, what a silly word. Hard work always pays off. Even if someones a fast learner doesn't mean a total dropout can't become great in time. Sure, not everyone can become Tommy Emmanuel, even if they spend their whole lives trying. That doesn't mean you can't always improve.
@Apanzon Talent has a ton do to with it. I've been playing for 7 years every single day for hours on end, and I know people who haven't been playing as long or often and are way better.
Some people will die before they become a great musician, even if they devote their whole life to it.
I think one only refuses to believe in talent if one refuses to believe one hasn't got it! Its what sorts the sheep from the goats and its very unfair that it's handed out by 'god'. The fundamental skills are needed to realise talent, but they wont bring you talent, no matter how hard you practice. You may however get a job as a session musican working for someone who does have talent but not skills
@PrisonBreakFilms if you are good at drums then you understand rhythm, which accounts for at least half of the skill in any instrument. he only had his left hand to worry about. what he probably means by not practicing is that he doesn't work scales and stuff like that, just works on a song until it is comfortable
Don't let J fool ya....... He KNOWS his chords, and maybe while not all that technical, he's got some good tricks up his sleeve. Even early on, he knew what he was doing.
@PrisonBreakFilms Thats true, the best shit for me is when is all out of tune and fucked up but still melodic thats how he plays and that how I play lol.
@WeDieYoung1991 he doesn't really sound of tune, I mean if I didn't know better I would think he's a guitar virtuoso (which in fact he might very well be)
No, you still need to know chords... Chords are the most basic thing to learn on guitar. If you don't learn at least the main chords, you will go nowhere.
His songs contain chords. But it's not that hard to discover chords. That's pretty much what I did. He probably just messed around and ended up teaching himself.
@JuggaloFaygoDrinker most likely, yeah. I mean, he doesn't look like the type of guy who spends hours locked up studying musical theory books, does he?
@JuggaloFaygoDrinker wish i could teach myself to be such a great guitarist and songwriter. Problem is, unlike J, I wasn't born with the talent. Ah well, bet I can spit further than J can tho!
@JuggaloFaygoDrinker Wishful thinking I'm afraid. Talent is what makes the difference and it's something you can't buy or create, it's there or it isnt. That's life.
@sunbeam11 Having the talent to play guitar is a talent that anyone can aquire. The talent that set J Mascis apart from every other kid playing guitar, is that J Mascis had the ability to envision and craft songs. Most people don't have that. They can play guitar, but they can't write or craft songs. These people usually end up being the back-up musicians behind Miley Cyrus or covering Nirvana and Metallica in some shitty bar.
@GrockJake I dont want to be pedantic but 'acquiring talent' is an oxymoron. By its very definition talent is something you either have or you don't. You can throw away a talent, by drink, drugs etc but you can't acquire one. A talent is something you are born with. If you are lucky you recognise it and then hone it. Practice can make you good - at golf, tennis, guitar playing etc - but talent is the unfair bit. No matter how hard you work you can't acquire it. That's life.
@sunbeam11 I agree with you about that being contradictory, but personally, I don't believe in talent. You may have a physical/mental predisposition to be good at certain things, but there will always be fundamental skills that must be learned. You could be the world's best golfer 20 years from now, but the first time you pick up a golf club, you won't know what to do with it until someone teaches you and you've done it for a while.
sunbeam11 is really talking about skill vs style, not talent
J i love you man but i swear if was ever interviewing i would seriously contemplate killing myself out of boredom, i swear just watching and hearing you talk makes me so sleepy
ive heard that j just walks around his house with a guitar straped on playing for hours just soloing epically for hours on end while watching tv or cooking...
Me and Mascis should do Acid some time .....

I don't get it, if he could play drums how could he switch to guitar? Did he already know how to play it?

You don't have to be born with the talent. You can develop it through practice.
