hi another tip for smiths would be when on a ledge use the corner of your front plate (the inside corner facing the ledge) to help balance so turn your plate out away from the rail and balance on the bakc truck a bit of the bar and that corner of the plate (if you get what i mean).
(This is Nick from Doomsday Streetboarding by the way)fdr
If you lock in by turning your front toe away from the rail, it automatically places more of your crossbar over the rail/ledge/coping... Hence giving you more surface area to grind, plus placing your centre of balance over the object, rather than next to it.
Try it man, seriously. You will notice the difference.
But you're telling people to point their front truck in towards the rail? That will only give them less balance. Try doing that in a halfpipe for confirmation ;) Your board will simply want to drop away from the coping, and you will face plant.
You turn your front foot away from the coping, bend your back leg and sort of bone your front one out... You've also got to balance your arms correctly.
yeah there might be difficult possibilities to do a trick..and they might be diffrent from obstacle to obstacle... For me (jeti) it works the way andy describes it in this vid (especially for curbs and rails). But nice to have some discussion here, I will give your suggestion a try

yeah thats the way I do them.
also (for a fs smith) it help turn your head (an shoulders) facing against slideing directiont. abvious later you shuold look foward :D
but that helps to bring the front shoulder above the curb/ledge.

Hate to break it to you bro,
