Also, pause at 0:16 (before the ref rolled the ball over), and you can see that it's pretty clearly a first down. You can also see subtle clues from the close-up that it's not a good angle (shot from slightly downfield), and the marker hasn't been tilted upright yet.

The close-up shot is not from an appropriate angle to judge whether or not it was a first down. When the camera zooms back out, you can see that it's pretty clearly across the marker, THEN the referee rolls the ball laces-up and signals first down.

It's pretty clear that you don't understand how different viewing angles affect perspective. The ball was across the end of the chain, but the camera angle briefly made it look like it wasn't. Please re-read my posts, keeping in mind that the marker is that big thing on the end of the chains.

Never saw the ball get moved. We only saw the view of the chains from a different angle. Unless the camera is perpendicular to the end of the chains, the view is incorrect. The camera angle makes it look like it is short when it isn't.

The better team lost and it will cost them the ACC championship. VT had a bad week and GT had a good one. Sometimes that's the way the cards fall, and it probably would have played out the same regardless.

That said, this ref should be punished. The SEC can admit when their crews mess up and the ACC should, too.

And tbh, my problem with the chop blocks is less how it *may* have affected the score, but that it can be a career-ender. It's dangerous and GT uses it consistently - not just against VT. I don't blame the players. This comes from the top down. I have nothing against GT but I don't like Paul Johnson and I wish the ACC would do something to stop his use of a move that is not only illegal but puts players at a higher risk of serious injury.

NOT a VT fan but VT was screwed! The ref moved the balled when he "rotated it". It was the worst I have ever seen watching football for 40 years. Also, the measurement was bad too because first down marker (the pole) was in the middle of the white line of the next yard. The unofficial yellow TV line was CORRECT. Whether or not the call determined the outcome of the game does not matter. This should be investigated.

Like I said earlier, the rule is that it's a first down if it touches the last link on the chain. You can see from the shot before he moved the ball that this was absolutely a first down.

Miami converted one just like this against GT earlier this year, and GT fans were moaning about it too. That one was even farther from the stick than this one, but they were both first downs.

coming from a lifelong VT fan....

yes we got screwed on multiple ball spots (most notbaly the one where we went for it on 4th down and 3) but regardless, the GT offense is made to get short yardage regardless of the defense. the only to stop the offense is to hold them under 3 yards the first carry, which we couldn't do. Bud Foster and Stinespring got outcoached, and our offensive line got outplayed. Georgia Tech deserved the win

Yes, VT got screwed on that call, but that did not turn the outcome. We had 1 more play, and we wouldve gone for it cause Paul Johnson has huge balls. We couldve gotten the inches needed cause we were in the swing of play by that point in the game. We then wouldve continued play as normal. Assuming it was called fairly AND VT managed to stop GT from getting the inch needed, VT still needed to stop us another possession AND score to win. Face it, you were outplayed.

It's the camera angle. Although the close up looks like the ball is short and the view is perpendicular to the chain, it's actually at an angle in front of the ball. The next shot from the zoomed out shot clearly shows it's past the marker before he even rolls it. He rolled it to the chain to make sure.

One of the worst calls I have seen in my life. Granted, it may not have made the difference in the long run (GT would have gone for it anyways, and probably would have made it.) but still, you can't be having that much of an effect on the game as a ref. Bad call.
