and you VT fans think that Josh Nesbitt would not have gotten the first down even if it was 4th down. The chances of him getting the first down there are 99%
Also, pause at 0:16 (before the ref rolled the ball over), and you can see that it's pretty clearly a first down. You can also see subtle clues from the close-up that it's not a good angle (shot from slightly downfield), and the marker hasn't been tilted upright yet.
The close-up shot is not from an appropriate angle to judge whether or not it was a first down. When the camera zooms back out, you can see that it's pretty clearly across the marker, THEN the referee rolls the ball laces-up and signals first down.
@lxUn1c0 The mark is just a estimated line put on tv not the actual mark dummy, you measure by the chain that was clearly shown in the video and the ball was no where near the end of it.
@ipaintboy Reading comprehension fail. What's that thing on the end of the chain? It's a MARKER. I didn't say anything about the line, which I know is a television graphic and an approximation. It's pretty clear that you don't understand how different viewing angles affect perspective. The ball was across the end of the chain, but the camera angle briefly made it look like it wasn't. Please re-read my posts, keeping in mind that the marker is that big thing on the end of the chains.
Never saw the ball get moved. We only saw the view of the chains from a different angle. Unless the camera is perpendicular to the end of the chains, the view is incorrect. The camera angle makes it look like it is short when it isn't.
@Eyewash03 Considering they are #2, yea they probably should. Although I would take Auburn over them any day consider BSU hasnt had much of a challenge this year.
@WahooFan5 uva has been in the acc 50 something years and still hasn't won a football championship. The best they could ever do is tie for 1st place. uva has never finished a football season in the top 10. uva should give up football and concentrate on lacrosse and women's sports.
VT fans act like this was a close game and GT was "lucky," but GT was on the verge of going up 3 scores with 7 min left, until they committed an unforced fumble inside the VT 15. VT never had the ball in the second half down less than 2 scores.
if i was a vt fan i guess i would have been pissed at this call. but it was a 3rd down and literally would have been centimeters. paul johnson will convert on 4th and centimeters any day of the week. ya that spot they gave vt on 4th down was pretty horrible i must say
I've been upset about this as well as the 4th down placement that the refs messed up since the game, but I'm getting over it. Congrats GT, hope you enjoy getting beat down in a BCS game.
The better team lost and it will cost them the ACC championship. VT had a bad week and GT had a good one. Sometimes that's the way the cards fall, and it probably would have played out the same regardless.
That said, this ref should be punished. The SEC can admit when their crews mess up and the ACC should, too.
And tbh, my problem with the chop blocks is less how it *may* have affected the score, but that it can be a career-ender. It's dangerous and GT uses it consistently - not just against VT. I don't blame the players. This comes from the top down. I have nothing against GT but I don't like Paul Johnson and I wish the ACC would do something to stop his use of a move that is not only illegal but puts players at a higher risk of serious injury.
why does it matter if he moved the ball?? it would have been 2nd down an inches and we would have gotten the first down the very next play with the way we were running the ball...
Yea, GT wins the ACC and then goes and represents our conference horribly in a BCS game. Wasn't even a game. I was kind of glad though because I much rather have played Tenn. than Iowa. SEC actually gave us a good game to play.
I'm a ramblin wreck from Georgia tech and I flopped at the end of the year!
I still think it should be "rounded" to the nearest yard. A ref goes "uhhhhhhhh... here!" and then it comes down to millimeters whether or not they make it? please. It'd be much easier, except on TD's, to say "yeah, he made it to this line."
In todays day and age why do they have to bring out these inaccurate twigs. They can tell if a ball moving well over 100 mph hits a line in tennis and you can't tell if a ball not moving to not moving has advanced 30 feet. Maybe football needs the Sky Caddie.
not a game changing call nobody said that....just bullshit that GT has got away with bullshit illegal plays and bad calls SEVERAL times this season already. the point is it was wrong and GT is getting away with a lot of shit.
we've had bullshit called against us, too. Like the clock not stopping with 18 seconds left in the half on a first down and out-of-bounds against UNC, or phantom block-in-the-backs against almost every opponent we've played.
what bullshit im done with ESPN and their shitty coverage!!!!!!!! The refs fucked them they def favored GT in every aspect of the game. complete bullshit maybe not a game changing BAD call but at least its on tape. GO HOKIES!!!!!!!
well, GT fumbled and VT got a TD off of it, so it really didn't have an effect anyways. I really wish bad calls didn't come into play later on, but they always do.
Good to see you staying classy after a loss. Hope you guys go 10-2 (you definitely should!)
NOT a VT fan but VT was screwed! The ref moved the balled when he "rotated it". It was the worst I have ever seen watching football for 40 years. Also, the measurement was bad too because first down marker (the pole) was in the middle of the white line of the next yard. The unofficial yellow TV line was CORRECT. Whether or not the call determined the outcome of the game does not matter. This should be investigated.
"first down marker (the pole) was in the middle of the white line of the next yard."
In 40 years of watching football you should know there's not a single field that is marked off perfectly. You can't rely on the field markings any more than the video painted yellow line.
VT didn't get screwed on this call. The ref was just rolling the ball sideways to see where it would hit.
Like I said earlier, the rule is that it's a first down if it touches the last link on the chain. You can see from the shot before he moved the ball that this was absolutely a first down.
Miami converted one just like this against GT earlier this year, and GT fans were moaning about it too. That one was even farther from the stick than this one, but they were both first downs.
yes we got screwed on multiple ball spots (most notbaly the one where we went for it on 4th down and 3) but regardless, the GT offense is made to get short yardage regardless of the defense. the only to stop the offense is to hold them under 3 yards the first carry, which we couldn't do. Bud Foster and Stinespring got outcoached, and our offensive line got outplayed. Georgia Tech deserved the win
yeah, we would have got the first down on the next play anyway. Your DT were breathing heavy and couldnt stop the dive/QB keeper. I was at the game and also remember GT getting a couple of bad spots too.
Even if it wasn't a first down, Tech would have gone for it and gotten it...no question. Nothing like the bullshit "helmet to helmet" call last year, which actually extended VT's winning drive.
For those saying it was a first down, are you fucking retarded? No part of the ball crossed the chains. When the ref moved the ball, it still didn't cross the chains. Go read a football rule book.
SO many comments from GT fans about nothing... VT got ripped off by a bad call that when the ball was placed regardless of where anyone thinks it should have been was placed indeed 3-4inches shy of the 1st marker..the Refs rolled and pushed it up and gave GT the first down which most likely turned the outcome.
Yes, VT got screwed on that call, but that did not turn the outcome. We had 1 more play, and we wouldve gone for it cause Paul Johnson has huge balls. We couldve gotten the inches needed cause we were in the swing of play by that point in the game. We then wouldve continued play as normal. Assuming it was called fairly AND VT managed to stop GT from getting the inch needed, VT still needed to stop us another possession AND score to win. Face it, you were outplayed.
It's the camera angle. Although the close up looks like the ball is short and the view is perpendicular to the chain, it's actually at an angle in front of the ball. The next shot from the zoomed out shot clearly shows it's past the marker before he even rolls it. He rolled it to the chain to make sure.
Tech fumbled it over to Va Tech tho right? so really this call did not effect the outcome.
BUT, that is uncalled for...and, just puzzling. why would he have done that? I got the vibe he was spinning the ball in hopes of taking away from the fact he scooted it up... unbefreakinleavable. almost as annoying as the "hip" pa announcer at the Tech games now...
It wasn't even just this call, if you watched the game regardless of who you like you have to admit we got the short end of the stick tonight (VT.) WE didn't play the best ball we ever hve and granted we may not have won anyway, but I want my team to lose themselves, not the refs to give the game to GT.
Agreed. Like I said, there needs to be some sort of fairness in this, and the game was quite short of that. But you can't rule out the amount of times VT couldn't stop the option in the second half. Whatever was changed at Half Time killed them.
