it is best that when putting things in mylar bags is to halfway seal them with a regular hair straightener, leave enough space to drop in the o2 absorber and then take a vaccumm and suction out the air then finish sealing the bag with the hair straightener, you will need to let it sit overnight and it should be extremely tight just like vaccumm sealing with the food saver. its bugs and oxygen that destroys food.
I keep my rice in 5 gallon food grade buckets from Home Depot. I don't use mylar bags or O2 absorbers-and I think it'll last forever plus 15 minutes! Seriously I don't think I need the bags or O2 absorbers if the rice will be used within the next 12 months or so.
@pranksterguy1 iv head that rice has a shelf life unless it is un-hulled . do you know anything about this ..also, what about wheat or oats ? i htink you can buy wheat by the bushel dirt cheap and i think that the wheat lasts for ever.. also suger is cheap and will last for a long time .
@pranksterguy1 i would be careful, there is one guy who made a video the name of his video is " warning to preppers" he had opened his bucket and there was tons of little bugs inside of it, i always like using DE (diatomaceous earth) before putting stuff in mylars, keeps any and all bugs off! he had the food grade bucket that had the seal.
In another video we saw someone putting his rice into super pails and placing dry ice at the bottom to "kill eggs." This makes us very nervous. If I don't do what he did but do what you do will we have a bug problem??

EXCELLENT VIDEO SOOTCH!! I've been getting the 3 1/2 gallon buckets from Publix. Have you ever measured the mylar bags to see how much you should cut off so you could use the excess to store other items like the beans ? If so, would you share that info with me? I'm new to this. Thanks.

Hi Sootch, first off I absolutely love the videos. Thank you for putting this great info out for all of us to see. In regards to water storage, would these buckets serve a good purpose for that?
Tried this out with my kids. Worked great!!! Went to Sam's and got a bunch of stuff. Got some mylar bags, and put everything up in the mylar bags and free buckets from Wal-Mart. Worked great!!!! Thanks for the vid.
@johnnyr612028 Look at my channel if gourmet entrees, breakfast, drinks that last 15+ years interest you that you can get for low as 67 cents a serving/cup.
Sootch you should buy Botan Calrose Rice. Seriously. I never realized the difference in rice until I met my wife whose Korean. Her and my mother inlaw as well will only buy that type. It is very sticky and is a better variety. They carry it at Walmart comes in 20lb bags.
You can extend the life of the food inside incase the bag is opened. If you have 30lbs of food and your only going to use 1lb at the moment it's nice to be able to reseal it and not have to carry around the iron and level to seel the bag.

Heh, heh, almost spilled the beans there, didn't ya? :) Great video. I too have been storing beans and rice in glass jars. I guess it's time to step up to bigger better things and get some buckets. As always, good tips. Hope you have a good new year. Take care.
Went out to dinner last night, and asked about the buckets, walked away with 4 5gallon buckets. The guys said all they do is throw them away anyway. Again thats for the tips.
@KresTKroVee Do you have a cat or a friend with a cat? A lot of cat litter comes in big plastic jugs, usually made out of HDPE so there's little to no risk of chemicals leeching out of it. The brand I buy comes in 3-gallon jugs. The litter is perfectly clean when it's new, so there's no "eww" factor. It's just bentonite clay. I wash them really well with dish soap and warm water, rinse them thoroughly, and fill them up with tap water. Put about 1 mL of chlorine bleach in for each gallon of water
Does anyone know if those hair straightener things would work (get hot enough) to seal mylar or other plastic bags? I think that if it would work it might be a bit handier than an iron.
I just ate some rice that I stored in a jar in 1985. It tastes the same as the rice I bought last week. No need for special bags, and irons, and tubs, and rulers, etc... Just buy some non-perishables, and store them sensibly. ... Why open a bag of rice, so that you can put it in a homemade bag, to put into a bin... ? Also, you may want to use those food grade containers, to store pure clean water for use later ;)
Yeah but in 30 years of my life i never encountered a situation like this! I never had to eat food from a trash can! I don't think Osama bin ladin or whater his name is, is gonna get us! haha stop watching Fox News! LOL
@MrTechMan800 You got it wrong. I think most people are more rightfully worried about Commie Obama bankrupting our country and destroying our constitutional rights. He's turning the country into a larger Orwellian police-state than Bush did. Read the article in the Washington Post - "Terrorist watch list: One tip now enough to put name in database, officials say". ObaMao and the Democrats actually made it easier for the government to place people on secret "terrorist" watch lists.
@Everett07630 You're right, but it goes so much deeper than just Obama. If it were just one man it would be easy to stop. He's just a convenient face to point fingers at, and that's the way they want it. The people that really run things in this country were never elected or even ran for office. There is a giant corporatocracy that runs this country, right along with the technocracy that they fund that is used to keep us all dumbed down and oblivious to the problem. "1984" is here and now.
@MrTechMan800 No surprise how ObaMao never fulfilled his 2008 campaign promise to end the federal government's domestic spying cabal that started under Bush. Noticed not a single peep out of the Dems and their supporters about it - crickets are the only thing we're hearing. I guess the Dems are too busy attempting to spin why granting the new found "power" of criminal sexual assault to the TSA is somehow good for Americans. So much for our constitutional rights.
If it's 150 Calories per serving, and it serves 100, then the whole pack is 150000 calories. Just multiply Calories per serving by how much people it serves to find calories per pack.
I have to tell you, we stored some garbonzo beans in mylar and they poked holes thru the mylar, so becarefull to check your bags, some might need to be packed double.
Mylar creates a oxygen AND light barrier. You can also store your oxygen absorbers in a zip lock bag. I try to go ahead and use all ten when I do it. Good job BTW. I did this same video when I first started making them years ago and you did it exactly the way I did it.
@TheGrayman1234 You really need to store the pkt once opened in a sealed mason jar. It helps much better with keeping the air out of the oxygen pkts. I know, we learned the hard way ; )
@Nosteratees You never know. We`re developing some pretty amazing technology at a fast pace these days, but it usually ignores the bare essentials of life.
I don't know if they'd have them in your area, but if you can find a decent Asian grocery store you should be able to get rice a lot cheaper than 10 pounds for $6
I just want to say thanks for all your hard work! I am new to prepping and I think you put out a lot of good videos and advice ! I also like your gun reviews and gun videos .
Great vid sootch. A lot of people, including myself, are looking for different ways to store food for the long term. And I have a feeling we need to do it soon.
Every one knows that 911 was an inside job right? You see, the King James Version of the bible is really the word of God! The (kjv) bible tells us that we are living in Satan's kingdom. Thus, we are all going fulfill our moral duty and expose the father of all lies by posting the 911 was an inside job icon right?
Great video. I think some of us (myself icluded) some times get fixated on the guns and tactics for self defense but in the end I can eat the AK or the pistol. I think the storing of food, and hiding in mulpitle locations that will pay off for the most part. Not that Im putting the AK down either just so you know ;)
Well with the new food law that the treasonous Congress passed, they're now using the govt's jackboot thugs to go after local small farmers and food co-ops at the behest of large globalist agra-businesses. If your own personal garden is large enough, and if you sell any extra produce from it, the federal govt will be targeting you under the new draconian "Food Safety Modernization Act". Just the mere act of "food hording" puts you on an unconstitutional govt "watch list".
Warning guys, I have been doing food storage for many years, the mylar bags were tried for grain and beans about 5 years ago, the mice chewed right through the bags!
We lost many bags of food, the bags were stored in cardboard boxes. Now the buckets and mylar bags will work great. As soon as I saw you pouring the beans into the bags I had to laugh, because it brought back the memories of grabbing a a bag of beans from the shelf and having them pour all over the floor, because of the chewed hole.
To add to the importance of keeping the food fresh and clean, it's important to remember how the body will be behaving in a WROL situation. In an event when you would have to utilize these provisions, your body would be dealing with long-term or chronic stress. That type of stress can reduce the immune system's ability to fight off pathogens. Something to consider at a point where you would have to open and use stored food.
Excellent video, great tips!!! We are now in qe2 and while 2011 looks to be a bullish year, silver gold and stocks will rise due to inflation. Promoting a sense of false wealth, obviously if you make more then 5 percent you are making profit. But as bernanke pumps more and more money into the economy inflation will grow. In his 60 minutes interview he said "I can control inflation" this is obviously a lie, because he felt he needed to reassure the people.
Thanks so much, Sootch for an excellent tutorial on food storage! You do a very good job of boiling things down to the basics. I am going to forward this to all my prepper friends as I'm sure they will like it too.
Also....those Ox Absorbers need to be resealed asap to keep them from going bad. I just use a mason jar and toss the unused one in that, and pack full of rice to help displace the air, and close her up. Soon, the lid will be "sucked" downward and sealed. I found 50 lb bags of hard red montana red wheat for $27, 25lbs quick oats for $16, 50lb wheat flour for $20, etc......so alot of bang for the buck.
Good presentation......more people should be doing this. I now have a huge stash of these buckets filled with all sorts of long term supplies. When I am using the mylar, I will add an Ox-absorber in the middle of the rice, wheat, etc.....sometimes use one in middle and one near top. Also, you can order the screw-on tops so you can get to the "vittles" without busting a fingernail. I find using a scrap piece of 3/4" flooring works for ironing the mylar. Keep stackin...silver and buckets.
Great vid! I recall one of my professors also talking about the new "Post-Fordism" stage of our economy. I think we need to re-industrialize and rebuild the middle class...or we will end up worse off than Russia after the cold war.
Thanks Sootch I was just about to update and resupply my food storage points. This video helped and the links you provided below too. Happy New Years my friend. >: )
Thanks for the plug. Vitamins will store if they are quality ones 1-5 years ( my supplier had a best buy date that avg 3 years shelf life) One could repack in mylar w/O2's if they wished to store them longer. The major issue is that the vitamins will lose their potenancy. In other words. That 500mg of Vit. C may only be as potent as a 200mg after so many years.
Please remember that these manufacturers expiry dates are only put on the products to comply with legal requirements, I am very familiar with pharma industry long term stability testing I can promise you that with both vitamins and medicine in tablet form do not suddently become toxic once they reach the expiry date, the only thing that happens is a VERY gradual reduction in efficacy and potency assuming normal ambient storage conditions, keep them cool & dry! Mylar bag them?
So I am finding it almost impossible to find mylar bags, between finding them ( i dont have a credit card so online purchase is out) and affording them... i am left with using strong freezer bags. I do all the same thing, remove the air from the bag, and seal them in the plastic pails. What do you think my rice shelf life might be compared to your rice shelf life?? I can only do what i can do. Thanks! :)
@StrivingForSurvival ....If you are in the southeastern US then I know you can get them at Ingles supermarkets..I work in management for them and we give them away all the time..the bakery department is where you will find them...just go to the bakery and ask if they have any empty buckets that you can have..they almost always have 10-20 buckets on any given day..they get in icing for cakes and glaze for doughnuts in these buckets so you will need to wash them to get all the oil residue out.
Question: What would you do for vitamins and minerals? In normal days with normal food, mineral supplements are not necessary, but if you go on an emergency diet, adding minerals to your daily intake is as important as adding vitamines. Especially if you survive on pasta or rice.
Hint: Cut the nutrition fact info from the bag and add it to the bucket, so you'll know in 15 years time what you have there and how you prepare it.
I have a little solution.Any CEO's/Owners of corp's who ship their plants oversea's loses their citizenship to the USA, and has to move to the country where they set up shop.I IT'S THAT PLAIN AND SIMPLE.I LOOK AT MOST OF THESE SCUMBAGS AS TRADERS TO THE USA AND NEED TO BE STRIPED OF THEIR CITIZENSHIP AND THEY CAN NEVER RETURN,PERIOD.
Added information - If you have children your survival menu items must be what the young children are accustomed too. Children do not change eating habits readily. A young child will starve themselves versus eating foods that are unfamiliar.
Recommendation indoctrinate survival foods slowly consistently into children's diet habits. If the need later arises they will be more apt to accept new diet items into their eating habits.
Excellent vid - putting it all to work. A good technique also is to install a fitting on the pail, hook up a vacuum pump if u have one, and evacuate the pail. Then add argon (available from any welding supply for cheap) - the noble gas won't react with anything inside, so you have a dry, inert environment in the bucket.
Sooch, My wife works at a Health Food Store. Some of their whey powders etc come in 6 gallon buckets. She has the standing dibbs on all of them. The folks might want to check there.
Good vid thx. I use seal a meal to store white rice but want to do some buckets too. Been buying Datrex 2400 calorie cookie rations. US Coast Guard 3 days 1 adult one cookie per 6 hrs. They taste like coconut and have 5 year+ shelf life. These require no cooking and taste good.
Why do you take them out of the original bag? Would it work the same if you just sealed up the bags or is there a problem with that? Good info, thanks sootch
Here's something I do when packing food. That little extra space at the top of the bag of rice. You could put random useful things. (small pot/lid, utensels, matches, roll of TP, gloves, knife, small first aid kit) things like that. Always put differnt stuff. But always put a small pot and matches. Just a thought. Thanks. Nice video.
Sootch, I've got a question for you. Why would you take the rice out of it's original package before sealing. It would seem to me that it would fit the same and it would offer an extra layer of protection? Great video as always and keep up the good work sir.
yea a false flag terrorist attactk,or a government created pandemic,or the government qe1 qe2,or the government hyperinflation,or the government false flag.on and on,great video.
Good video - Thank you. Don't forget your local LDS Church offers sacks or cans of basics for a bit cheaper than Mountain House. Call them to find out where the local food distribution location is and call them directly to schedule a pick up.
@sootch00 Thanks for your efforts - as always your vids are no-nonsense, no drama, practical information.
I store in the typical 50 Cal ammo cans and use silicon for drying. Make by own Desiccant packets from silica in coffee filters. I have seen some folks take ammo (that is stored with or near weapons in mags or bandoleers) and seal the primer with fingernail polish (shotgun shells and center fire cartridges), but not certain that is a good idea. I'll dig up your old video.
@sootch00 ...I called the LDS cannery in columbia yesterday and talked to them (verry helpful) my boss and i are planning a trip in jan too.Keep the vids going.........Steve
@ROFLpwnedvideos Yeah, I'm now hearing that it's not critical. One upside is the Food Grade buckets can be gotten for free at grocery stores or restaurants so I'm cool with it. But I say do with what you have. Thanks for the input.
@ROFLpwnedvideos It's because everything is permeable, even the mylar and the bucket. The thicker the layer, the less permeability for air to get into your food. Over time, molecules from the air will eventually diffuse into the food, so you want as much protection as you can.
Great video, I started doing this process about 4 months ago after I watched minibulldesign's channel as well as delta69delta's channel. It's a really effective method of storing food, and you explain it just as well as anyone. Thanks for sharing, you definitely ROCK!!!
People should try there nearest LDS cannary. Some allow non members to buy there dry goods at costs. They also let you use there canning machines for free. The one closest to me is in Colombia, SC and DOES allow non members to purchase and can goods. I will be heading there in a few weeks.
@USFA45LC I'm planning to head to The Cannery in Columbia in Jan myself . I'll be doing a video on that trip as well. Thanks for mentioning this option. Maybe I'll see you there.
@USFA45LC I highly recommend the LDS Cannery!! Only issue is bulk and weight of cans. Seems like the 40 cans I've had for 10 years are a fixed place thing. Maybe not the best idea for me still living in an apartment complex but it'll be great when we purchase our home.
Take either a pillow case or some other fabric and place it between the iron and the bag that you're sealing. It helps to dissipate some of the heat from the iron and prevents the bags from melting or bind on the irons surface. It will give you a very clean seal. (Particularly resealing the plastic bag with the oxygen absorbers)
@sootch00 Nice! When I can afford them I get me a Maduro and a nice shot of Jack Daniels or Brandy.. When I was in Honduras training contras in 81' I had me a whole ammo box full of cojibas, Some humidor huh? lol
Question 1! who wants to be stuck in a room with people who has to eat beans and rice for survival? That makes you gassy lol I say add that BEANO vitamin supplement to the survival bucket lol After watching this I know what I will add to my bucket. Water never gets old lol so Add some Aquafina, gotta have junk food, and for meat Beef jerky and Nature Made Multivitamins to keep up my health funtions. Soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste and scope. Wow thanks for the idea Sootch00!
another good place to get food grade buckets is hamburger joints (burgerking, mc d's windy's) they all get pickles in 5 gal buckets. Mix some water and baking soda in the buckets for a couple days and the pickle smell will be gone.....
I seal all my food in large single serving portions. I put my powdered milk in bags and then put the bags in glass containers. Mice and rats can't chew through glass like a plastic bucket, plus I have a container to just add water and shake up for any size. So I'm saving and using all my glass bottles and lids. I do store in food buckets too, but I put those in food grade 55 gal. metal drums. Don't forget to throw in lil' salt / spice packs and small nalgene or glass bottles of cooking oil.
it is best that when putting things in mylar bags is to halfway seal them with a regular hair straightener, leave enough space to drop in the o2 absorber and then take a vaccumm and suction out the air then finish sealing the bag with the hair straightener, you will need to let it sit overnight and it should be extremely tight just like vaccumm sealing with the food saver. its bugs and oxygen that destroys food.

For one you dont want to use a bucket that held chemicals. Chem residue will still be there.
You also want a bucket that is air tight. Always a chance that the mylar may have small leaks. Moisture will accelerate storage life of your goodies.
Finally you want to discourage rodents from getting at your food storage.

He's just a convenient face to point fingers at, and that's the way they want it. The people that really run things in this country were never elected or even ran for office. There is a giant corporatocracy that runs this country, right along with the technocracy that they fund that is used to keep us all dumbed down and oblivious to the problem. "1984" is here and now.
gblpst81 1 year ago
@MrTechMan800 No surprise how ObaMao never fulfilled his 2008 campaign promise to end the federal government's domestic spying cabal that started under Bush. Noticed not a single peep out of the Dems and their supporters about it - crickets are the only thing we're hearing. I guess the Dems are too busy attempting to spin why granting the new found "power" of criminal sexual assault to the TSA is somehow good for Americans. So much for our constitutional rights.

If it's 150 Calories per serving, and it serves 100, then the whole pack is 150000 calories. Just multiply Calories per serving by how much people it serves to find calories per pack.

john762x39 1 year ago
Mylar creates a oxygen AND light barrier. You can also store your oxygen absorbers in a zip lock bag. I try to go ahead and use all ten when I do it. Good job BTW. I did this same video when I first started making them years ago and you did it exactly the way I did it.
TheGrayman1234 1 year ago
@TheGrayman1234 You really need to store the pkt once opened in a sealed mason jar. It helps much better with keeping the air out of the oxygen pkts. I know, we learned the hard way ; )

How long will the rice last for with oxygen absorbers? How about without oxygen absorbers?
jkatz44 1 year ago
To add to the importance of keeping the food fresh and clean, it's important to remember how the body will be behaving in a WROL situation. In an event when you would have to utilize these provisions, your body would be dealing with long-term or chronic stress. That type of stress can reduce the immune system's ability to fight off pathogens. Something to consider at a point where you would have to open and use stored food.

I add bay leaves before sealing the bag. Supposed to help with any pests that might be present in the store bought bag of rice.

Nice video.. some things to what I would do extra:
- Paint the lid. (for instance: red for bulk beans/rice, green for cans of other stuff, etc)
- In case of burrying that stuff: put a (laminated) card inside the pail with the contents of the pail.

Oxygen absorbers is to stop food oxidising and rotting, not to create a vacuum :)
IIRockstarrxX 1 year ago
Also....those Ox Absorbers need to be resealed asap to keep them from going bad. I just use a mason jar and toss the unused one in that, and pack full of rice to help displace the air, and close her up. Soon, the lid will be "sucked" downward and sealed. I found 50 lb bags of hard red montana red wheat for $27, 25lbs quick oats for $16, 50lb wheat flour for $20, etc......so alot of bang for the buck.
crazeyspivey 1 year ago
Good presentation......more people should be doing this. I now have a huge stash of these buckets filled with all sorts of long term supplies. When I am using the mylar, I will add an Ox-absorber in the middle of the rice, wheat, etc.....sometimes use one in middle and one near top. Also, you can order the screw-on tops so you can get to the "vittles" without busting a fingernail. I find using a scrap piece of 3/4" flooring works for ironing the mylar. Keep stackin...silver and buckets.

Thanks again for the shout out.

StrivingForSurvival 1 year ago
@StrivingForSurvival ....If you are in the southeastern US then I know you can get them at Ingles supermarkets..I work in management for them and we give them away all the time..the bakery department is where you will find them...just go to the bakery and ask if they have any empty buckets that you can have..they almost always have 10-20 buckets on any given day..they get in icing for cakes and glaze for doughnuts in these buckets so you will need to wash them to get all the oil residue out.

Awsome video as always.

If you are using a liner, why do you need to worry about food grade buckets?
ROFLpwnedvideos 1 year ago
@ROFLpwnedvideos Yeah, I'm now hearing that it's not critical. One upside is the Food Grade buckets can be gotten for free at grocery stores or restaurants so I'm cool with it. But I say do with what you have. Thanks for the input.
sootch00 1 year ago
@ROFLpwnedvideos It's because everything is permeable, even the mylar and the bucket. The thicker the layer, the less permeability for air to get into your food. Over time, molecules from the air will eventually diffuse into the food, so you want as much protection as you can.
