No one really understand what it meansby Rickson being undefeated , he has said that he can teach people to be invincible, he does not mean they will all have a 400-0 record but he means that will have the confidence to face anything Rickson is mentally undefeated , he never backed away from a challenge and always ready to give 200% effort in the ring, I admire him not only for his martial art mastery but also for his superior mental strength and amazing philosophy
Rickson's Bjj was the most pure of his time, but that time has changed now. As of present day,..........he would still be one of the tops in the game. His striking would have been better today than of his time, face it this was one bad mother-effer!
I've never seen what the big deal is about Rickson. He has no record of fighting any real big names in Martial Art's competition (apart from Funaki) critisises all the top named fighters but when they call him out he never step's up to the plate.
No doubt he's a tellented grappler but the man believes his own hype way too much and hasn't done no where near enough in my books to be considered a legend.
Even the late (and truly great) Helio Gracie disputes his accounts & that speaks volumes.

They are not sparring matches, but competition and challenge matches, and street fights. So maybe 400 is a bit of a stretch, but how many fighters count "Bare Knuckle" street fights. Rickson is still undefeated as a professional and amateur BJJ.

rickson won the competition preceeding the mundials every year his division and the absolute, he was in his 30s by the time the mundials arrived and he had long since retired, grapplers such as galvao, maia and jacare have paid testament to rickson's skill on the mat, no one has beaten him or come close to beating him in bjj sparring or competition.
In mma he won a competition much harder than the early ufcs, gordeau the finalist from ufc 1 could even get through the first round.

Rickson was to be the fighter that they wanted in UFC 1, but Rorian thought it best to give Royce the chance. The reasons are Rorian wanted to prove that you didn't need size to win, so Royce was given the shot. Rickson would've torn through UFC 1-7 easily. Too bad he was ahead of his time, just like Bruce Lee.
It's too bad an athlete like Rickson was never in his prime when MMA hit it big. But really I don't even think he really was someone who took fighting too seriously. But man was he an amazing grappler.
I like rickson because he took fighting as a religion. It is not about the win but about the lessons. He prepared his mind equally as he prepared his pysical. That was a Judo/Sambo tourney where the rules werent explained properly to Rickson who barely spoke english at the time and had competed in less that 5 sambo/judo competitions at the time..and his 400-0 record makes reference to his bjj matches, grudge/dojo matches and mma matches..his father made that comment because he only competed a few times in a "vale tudo" scenario, where his match count was tiny..he was referring to BJJ tourneys with no time limits that were looked upon as street fights.
Buster Douglas was seen as just another chump, yet look at what he did to Tyson. Matt Sera wasn't given a hope against St Pierre, look at what happened there. Gonzaga was seen as a stepping stone for Cro Cop towards a UFC title fight, and Gonzaga almost killed him.

Rickson actually fought legitimate competition when he fought. He beat Masakatsu Funaki who is a legend. You can play your whos better then who games. Rickson is better the Royce and any Gracie family member would tell you that. He has better straight jits then Nogueira. MMA wise? who knows.

Rickson fought the best there was between 1990-2000. In those years japan vale tudo/pride was where the best fighters were. Ufc wasn't up there yet. He stoped fighting in 2000 because his son rockson died. I guess it wasn't the same fighting without rockson(his son) in his corner. He would have kept fighting.
Gracie juijitsu techniques are the same as judo only with english names, it has the same philosopies that judo as well, they are are great warriors but they didnt bring any new techniques all these techniques are from japan feudal era.
Rickson wisely chose his opponents he fought the best through his prime and demolished them all easily, the more the sport spread the more it was barstedised by money and the negative aspect of fighting, rickson is a rare and enlightened man, he choose to fight those who he truly felt could showcase a sport his family built in a positive light, something the ortiz, shamrocks etc could never do

I don't think it's a fair debate, because we will never know how Rickson vs Fedor would have been, if Rickson was in his prime. I am a big time Fedor fan, but no one is unbeatable, this also goes for Rickson. I would rather see Rickson vs Sakuraba because both have passed their prime. Fedor is still in his prime and it would not be fair.

For those who say Rickson is the best, get real! his self proclaimed record of 400-0 is just that, self proclaimed. Even his own father exposed him. he may have fought 400 matches but definately not at a professional level. He never fought any big names and dodge Sakuraba the gracie hunter. He said he would beat Fedor today but fails to back his shit up. He's all hype. MMA has evolved so much rickson's BJJ skills no longer cuts it!

ive read somewhere that Ricksons 400-0 record is mostly sparring sessions with his brothers and because they are so good, winning over them in sparring is like winning in a real match against an opponent.. hahahahhaa
yeah i laughed really hard too when i read that.. yep there u have ricksons 400-0 record and 360 of them are jiu jitsu sparring sessions :)

Rickson was to be the fighter that they wanted in UFC 1, but Rorian thought it best to give Royce the chance. The reasons are Rorian wanted to prove that you didn't need size to win, so Royce was given the shot. Rickson would've torn through UFC 1-7 easily. Too bad he was ahead of his time, just like Bruce Lee.

I like rickson because he took fighting as a religion. It is not about the win but about the lessons. He prepared his mind equally as he prepared his pysical. He was so prepared mentally that a lot of fighters would feel his confidence and would be beat before the fight even started. It's not about getting tatts and wearing fight shirts & hats. Some are in it for the image of the sport.

Rickson Gracie is the HOTTEST mn on earth, and he kicks ass!!! I could watch him fight all day!! I had the pleasure of meeting Royler Gracie, he's a very humble sweet guy. This family brought MMA, and Jiu Jitsu to the U.S! Without them there would be no UFC. I will always think of the Gracie's as legends!!

That was a Judo/Sambo tourney where the rules werent explained properly to Rickson who barely spoke english at the time and had competed in less that 5 sambo/judo competitions at the time..and his 400-0 record makes reference to his bjj matches, grudge/dojo matches and mma matches..his father made that comment because he only competed a few times in a "vale tudo" scenario, where his match count was tiny..he was referring to BJJ tourneys with no time limits that were looked upon as street fights.

Buster Douglas was seen as just another chump, yet look at what he did to Tyson. Matt Sera wasn't given a hope against St Pierre, look at what happened there. Gonzaga was seen as a stepping stone for Cro Cop towards a UFC title fight, and Gonzaga almost killed him.
Some people don't seem to understand that anything can happen in a fight. Calling fighters who are far more skilled and proven than yourself 'chumps' is a sign of ignorance.

Devemos sempre lembrar que nos primeiros minutos de uma luta somos um lutador, nos outros minutos outro lutador completamente diferente e cansado. Dessa forma devemos lembrar que PEIXOTINHO já havia feito 4 lutas e RICKSON estava fazendo sua primeira luta com o PEIXOTINHO. To be honest the first I saw of Ron Tripp was a mention on Wikipedia recently, not prior to that. I think Rickson was pretty good, what do you consider more worthy though, winning a street fight where anything goes or a competition where there's rules and restrictions? He did both didn't he?

Rickson actually fought legitimate competition when he fought. He beat Masakatsu Funaki who is a legend. You can play your whos better then who games. We all know Rickson couldn't compete with younger faster stronger guys now. He took Jiu Jitsu and put it on another level. Then Rorian made the UFC and had Royce do it. Rickson is better the Royce and any Gracie family member would tell you that. He has better straight jits then Nogueira. MMA wise? who knows.

Bas challenged him when his son had already died. Like I said before rickson was the best until the year 2000 when his son died. A lot of fighters challenged him after his son died. Before that they kept their mouth shut. Funaki got beat by rickson and funaki beat bas ruten.

Para de falar merda.Fedor e Minotauro eram criancinhas quando o Rickson tava no tempo dele. Randy nem era conhecido. Wallid não era ninguém, o Marco Ruas foi humilhado por um japa chamado Alexander Otsuka e correu quando o Rickson foi desafiar ele na academia dele. E o Bas nem lutador de MMA era. Todos esses aí são bem mais novos que o Rickson.

We should look at them that they were champions at their days. Do not compare them with fighters today. They were untouchable when sport was on lower lvl but nobody could beat them. I think Rixon was great and respect for him:) He also is good person;)

Rickson fought the best there was between 1990-2000. In those years japan vale tudo/pride was where the best fighters were. Ufc wasn't up there yet. He stoped fighting in 2000 because his son rockson died. I guess it wasn't the same fighting without rockson(his son) in his corner. He would have kept fighting.

Gracie juijitsu techniques are the same as judo only with english names, it has the same philosopies that judo as well, they are are great warriors but they didnt bring any new techniques all these techniques are from japan feudal era.

Rickson wisely chose his opponents he fought the best through his prime and demolished them all easily, the more the sport spread the more it was barstedised by money and the negative aspect of fighting, rickson is a rare and enlightened man, he choose to fight those who he truly felt could showcase a sport his family built in a positive light, something the ortiz, shamrocks etc could never do

Also he was getting old by the time MMA really started to become big worldwide, not making excuses for him, but age takes its toll on everyone and why would he want to destroy his legacy by trying to prove a point, when really he had nothing else to prove...I love Randy Couture, and respect the hell out of him for going on as long as he did, but honestly the losses really started to pile up, take a look at randy's fight record for the last 5 years of his career, see how many fights he won/loss

How can anyone say he hasn't proved himself? Have you seen his record? Last I checked (which was a while ago) he was at 403-0...I don't care who the fuck you're fighting, to have that many fights and not lose a single one makes him a freaking legend in my eyes...remember that at the time when the Gracies were the shit in MMA, Rickson was the king of them all, he would have torn right through anyone in the UFC or PRIDE in his prime

Every time I see Rickson fight he totally destroys his opponent. His technique with BJJ is immeasurable. But what sort of pisses me off is that he always fights some nobody no one really knows of. Can somebody fill me in here? Why did he not fight Sakuraba when Sakuraba was his "Gracie Hunt" years ago?

People always debate past legends vs present champions, it's like that in every sport...
I don't think it's a fair debate, because we will never know how Rickson vs Fedor would have been, if Rickson was in his prime. I am a big time Fedor fan, but no one is unbeatable, this also goes for Rickson. I would rather see Rickson vs Sakuraba because both have passed their prime. Fedor is still in his prime and it would not be fair.

I respect Rickson as a MMArtist, but i dont think he can beat top level fighters today like Josh Barnett, Fedor, Mark Hunt etc. Because, THEY KNOW THE GROUND GAME TOO! And Rickson made that possible for them.
