Hey there John and Hank and people of the interwebs!
I'm a new Nerdfighter from Britain and have jsut started on YouTube and I am just trying to publicise my videos at the mo. Could you guys thumb this comment and be totally awesome!
@AudioRecovered It's you! I've been watching old Vlogbrothers videos and I was wondering to myself, 'who is this person that keeps commenting?' and I've finally read the name. It's a wonder I didn't find your videos from watching these...

Man, watching this almost made me cry remembering Japan and all the devastation over there. Like a lot of people, I have family there. It was a really scary time.
Every time I watch videos where they record themselves while driving, I can't help but think: "That's illegal where I live." Though one has to admire the talent it took for John to record himself, drive, and talk on the phone at the same time.
Oh my god I know the people who live in the gray house at 1:14 they're friends of my aunt! I've been to that house, it's really cool on the inside. Woohoo for connections. I love Venice.
january 24 is my birthday - though i was born in 1994.
in the middle of writing this comment, i thought about how many other people have an anniversary or an event occur on that same day, and that though the day is special to me - for it marks my existence - the fact that it holds a deeper meaning for others has more of an impact.
Okay seriously guys watch Ransom's video. John wasn't exaggerating when he called it the greatest YouTube video of all time. It's beautiful and deeply moving.
I just finished a class on essays, including a unit on place as memory. I wish we could have talked about this, which is thought provoking and meaning full, instead of Eula Biss, who complains a lot.
When something terrible happens I feel i should be contemplating life at every second, though I find myself drifting into a state of nothingness and the moment a sign of happiness or feeling comes along, I grasp at the chance to laugh so that I can fake assurance.
The earthquake in Japan happened on my best friends birthday, we were all late that morning from staying inside and watching the news. The whole day was just spent watching the situation unfold. That evening we went out in celebration, but it wasn't tainted or muted per se. But subtly altered due to the events of that day.
I'm not saying that that was a bad thing, merely that it connected to your statement, that we're all connected to death in some way.
holly... Edgar Allen Poe, you know Ransom Riggs? The fracking author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!?!?!? You are cooler then I originally thought, and I already thought you were cool (in a nerdy way, of course)
I still currently live in Japan. And when the earthquake happened it was just something you can't really think of happening even if you hear about it. And all those words you said about it kind of makes things in perspective and very interesting to think about. That's why, John, you are an author.
"All human life is lived in close proximity to tragedy." You have really changed my outlook on life John. I see the world from a different angle since I discovered your novels and videos and I want to thank you for that. You made me appreciate what I have because, somewhere, someone is wishing that they had it as good as I do.
your reflection on this day was really moving. I find I watch you guys for a chuckle here, or a general mood lift there -- every now and again you'll make a comment that really strikes a chord.
"Found baby girl, 1961"
There are no words for the depth of the moment captured in that photograph.

I like you, Hank. You think about a lot of things. And not just stupid things, but meaningful things. I could even say you think too much. And I'm glad that I spend my internet time listening to a successful guy who has a life, and who is SMART. I'm glad you're not just some loser who sits in his mother's basement all day.
Ransom's photos... He might benefit from a scanner. No need for all the pictures, storing them and so on. Just scan and save. One of the newer terrabyte drives should do it for the rest of his life. Just a thought. Good video. thanks!
OH! Yay! I can ask you. There's a literary term for something bad happening on a nice day, or something like that. I remember discussing it while reading Night in 9th grade. You have a beautiful soul. You articulated so well that feeling of time's relentless march, of our own impotence and even indifference in the face of others' suffering, because life just won't stop. I have to hope that people can know that we think of them, or at least that that as those thoughts prompt us to act, we will provide the solace they need.
This is honestly one of my favorite videos. I also collect photographs, it all started after my granny died and I found some really old images of her when she was younger. It's nice to know that there are others with similar passions.
I really would like to know who the baby girl was.
I forgot I had started an Ice Cube music Viedo before I clicked this one...it was so fitting for the video...really strange with your voice on top of that...
This is my favourite of all your videos, John. It was beautiful and warm and sentimental and lovely- just like your books... Each of which I have devoured cover to cover. I'm very much an amateur writer myself and hearing the way you talk and obviously love language as you do fills me with joy.
I've been watching your channel for what feels like forever, please never stop being lovely.
Oh my. You guys are really something. You could both definitely make a positive impact on the world if you haven't already. I really respect both of you. Keep doing what you're doing.
I taught English two years ago in Ishinomaki, Japan, one of the hardest hit cities. I just learned today that 2 of my very young students died. It was a horrible feeling, reading that email.
when i heard about the Tsunami and saw it on the news it inspired me (along with you and hank going to some places like haiti) so when i finish this year at my university i shall volunteer to be a charity worker over seas to help decrease world suck. Please keep making videos that inspire people and make them think.
This video has me just about in tears. I felt really scared that day, watching the news and being on the Japan-side of the ocean. Luckily for me and everyone/thing I know, there were few ill effects for Yokohama that day. The only thing that kept me from completely turning into a wreck that day was the e-mails of concern and love coming from friends and family on my cellphone. Technology was the only bridge to any sort of happiness for many that day.
"Images can travel in a way that thoughts cannot" and "technology can never quite bridge the oceans between us" -beautifully said and very memorable. I'm never going to forget that :]
You say that it is sad that the turtles are imprisoned by the child's pool, but at least that is a physical confinement. Most of us are confined by things that are not even there at all.
@tibees That was beautiful. I wish we could all think and speak as poetically as you and John, then maybe the comments on YouTube would actually be anticipated instead of just random outbursts of anger at one another for no reason other than boredom.
I've lived in LA for all my life and never heard of the Venice canals. I just made the trip, it was awesomely beautiful. Thanks for NY adventure today.
@computernerdsunited Well I am still wearing the shoes. They are not the kind of fancy shoes that get ruined by salt water or anything. They are, like, $9 shoes, thank goodness. -John
Hahaha...Wilshire and San Vicente are both parallel and perpendicular, depending. :) Think that's confusing? Did you get the chance to follow signs for the 101 freeway North only to discover the on-ramp labelled 101 West, or follow signs for 101 East only to find yourself merging onto the 101 South? I think they do these things just to give us one more reason to feel smug and in-the-know. I <3 my city.
Btw, you were in L.A. and I didn't know? How? What am I doing wrong? Help!
I did some digging at the Pasadena Library and found some info on the baby and even a picture. The newspapers dubbed the baby "Little Miss Rose Bowl." Dorothy and her husband, Don, filed to make their home a foster home just two weeks after they found the baby. Later that year they moved to La Habra, CA though my trail went cold here. I went to the ning to see what other nerdfighters found and wondered if "Little Miss Rose Bowl" knows she was adopted. The rest of the story is up on the Ning.
@annababy911 No, I did none of the math in "An Abundance of Katherines." Well, I did the *thinking* behind the math but not the actual math. The math was done by brotherhood 2.0 resident mathematician Daniel Biss. -John
@vlogbrothers wait. wait, this is important. is the same Daniel Biss that represents me in the Illinois House of Representatives? (17th district.) because that would actually make my week. (and make me believe in Illinois politics again!)

Your photographer friend reminds me of the character Amelie in the movie Amelie. I suggest you watch it if you haven't already.
TheDiverdude3742 11 months ago
"Images can travel in a way that thoughts cannot" and "technology can never quite bridge the oceans between us" -beautifully said and very memorable. I'm never going to forget that :]

Why do you put things so beautifully? I wanted to cry when you went on that tangent in the last third of this...

That was actually very a very beautiful and thoughtful video

@zachissmart How does one write a box?
TheWittiestGirl 11 months ago
John, you should write a box based on that photograph where the baby was found!

I HAVE THAT SAME CAR AS YOU!!! Or rather, my mom has that car...

You say that it is sad that the turtles are imprisoned by the child's pool, but at least that is a physical confinement. Most of us are confined by things that are not even there at all.
tibees 11 months ago 14
@tibees That was beautiful. I wish we could all think and speak as poetically as you and John, then maybe the comments on YouTube would actually be anticipated instead of just random outbursts of anger at one another for no reason other than boredom.

I've lived in LA for all my life and never heard of the Venice canals. I just made the trip, it was awesomely beautiful. Thanks for NY adventure today.

How can you forget you have shoes on? What a waste of shoes! :O
computernerdsunited 11 months ago 64
@computernerdsunited Well I am still wearing the shoes. They are not the kind of fancy shoes that get ruined by salt water or anything. They are, like, $9 shoes, thank goodness. -John

@vlogbrothers That's how all of my shoes are!(: Why spend 60 bucks on vans when you can get the same pair for 5 at forever XXI?

John you give me an idea to help the Japan people by having a lemonade stand! Of course I will give the crite to you.

I love that even while asking for directions, John manages to sound highly intelligent. I usually sound like a bumbling fool.

The rest of the story is up on the Ning.

john, did you do all the math for "an abundance of kathrines?"
annababy911 11 months ago 28
@annababy911 No, his mathemician friend did. I don't remember the name but I'm pretty sure they explain it all in the back of the book
tenatopps 11 months ago
@tenatopps Hs name was Daniel Biss.
BoxioBrowz 11 months ago
@annababy911 No, I did none of the math in "An Abundance of Katherines." Well, I did the *thinking* behind the math but not the actual math. The math was done by brotherhood 2.0 resident mathematician Daniel Biss. -John

@vlogbrothers wait. wait, this is important. is the same Daniel Biss that represents me in the Illinois House of Representatives? (17th district.) because that would actually make my week. (and make me believe in Illinois politics again!)
