  • First Thoughts From Places video I ever watched... knew right then that yes, I was a nerdfighter.

  • I love when videos make more sense when you know more details. His book was amazing!!!

  • He speaks so beautifully without even trying

  • i love mrs peregiunes !!!!!!!

  • How did I go so long without knowing who this man is!? John Green = Amazing!

  • No reason. Fail, me.

  • @ENTERRAPTURE20: Come on, man. If the world does end this year (and I see know reason to believe that it will) then don't dwell on it. We all have to die one day, but we don't have to dwell on the reality of our inevitable demise. You're alive, friend. LIVE.

  • Hey there John and Hank and people of the interwebs!

I'm a new Nerdfighter from Britain and have jsut started on YouTube and I am just trying to publicise my videos at the mo. Could you guys thumb this comment and be totally awesome!

    Much love guys and DFTBA!

  • @AudioRecovered It's you! I've been watching old Vlogbrothers videos and I was wondering to myself, 'who is this person that keeps commenting?' and I've finally read the name. It's a wonder I didn't find your videos from watching these...

  • Man, watching this almost made me cry remembering Japan and all the devastation over there. Like a lot of people, I have family there. It was a really scary time.

    Obviously still scary.

  • Every time I watch videos where they record themselves while driving, I can't help but think: "That's illegal where I live." Though one has to admire the talent it took for John to record himself, drive, and talk on the phone at the same time.

  • Oh my god I know the people who live in the gray house at 1:14 they're friends of my aunt! I've been to that house, it's really cool on the inside. Woohoo for connections. I love Venice.

  • wow you can drive, vlog and phone your friend asking for directions, that's pretty awesome

  • Anyone else think that the contents in this video could be a great book?

  • It's Ransom Riggs!!

  • Compton <3 : )

  • Ransom is a BAMFy name.

  • I suddenly feel awesome because John was the beach I go to regularly during the summer. 1:06

  • Key to getting un-lost in L.A.

1.) Travel west until you find a freeway

2.) Ya... you can take it from there

  • LA is not really as amazing as it seems. Well I might sound bias because I've lived here my whole fraken life.

  • @izzytheiz Everything is like that. Except ireland.

  • january 24 is my birthday - though i was born in 1994.

in the middle of writing this comment, i thought about how many other people have an anniversary or an event occur on that same day, and that though the day is special to me - for it marks my existence - the fact that it holds a deeper meaning for others has more of an impact.

  • Okay seriously guys watch Ransom's video. John wasn't exaggerating when he called it the greatest YouTube video of all time. It's beautiful and deeply moving.

  • Dude, I was in LA at the same time you were, John! I was there to play music in Disneyland though.

  • I just finished a class on essays, including a unit on place as memory. I wish we could have talked about this, which is thought provoking and meaning full, instead of Eula Biss, who complains a lot.

  • idiot

  • L.A is nothing special, really. Though I suppose that it is because I've lived here all of my life...

  • this was uploaded on my birthday. i <3 vlogbrother, DFTBA

  • I love palm trees :D xD lol

  • When something terrible happens I feel i should be contemplating life at every second, though I find myself drifting into a state of nothingness and the moment a sign of happiness or feeling comes along, I grasp at the chance to laugh so that I can fake assurance.

  • The earthquake in Japan happened on my best friends birthday, we were all late that morning from staying inside and watching the news. The whole day was just spent watching the situation unfold. That evening we went out in celebration, but it wasn't tainted or muted per se. But subtly altered due to the events of that day.

I'm not saying that that was a bad thing, merely that it connected to your statement, that we're all connected to death in some way.

  • So many lines in this video are quoteable !

  • Comment removed

  • @mrmunchy144 Thou gorbellied dread-bolted blind-worm! Thou art unfit for any place but hell.

  • @ClaireLaBear11 I'm sorry this was not the work of me, it was the work of my unfit brother...sigh

  • "wouldn't it be sad if a child's' pool could imprison you?"

    best line ever.

  • my birthday is january 24th :L

  • holly... Edgar Allen Poe, you know Ransom Riggs? The fracking author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!?!?!? You are cooler then I originally thought, and I already thought you were cool (in a nerdy way, of course)

  • 1:11 venice canals?! i've lived in LA all of the 14 years of my life and i've never heard of that place o_o

  • I still currently live in Japan. And when the earthquake happened it was just something you can't really think of happening even if you hear about it. And all those words you said about it kind of makes things in perspective and very interesting to think about. That's why, John, you are an author.

  • "All human life is lived in close proximity to tragedy." You have really changed my outlook on life John. I see the world from a different angle since I discovered your novels and videos and I want to thank you for that. You made me appreciate what I have because, somewhere, someone is wishing that they had it as good as I do.

  • Thank you John, for posting this video and introducing me to Ransom Riggs, who's book I have just read an fallen in love with.

  • I just got chills at the end of this vid from your words.

When I can speak in such wonderful prose, my life will be complete...

  • @ReKrisB What, "Welcome back from Haiti, I'll see you on Tuesday?" :p

  • you are truly an author, by the way you were explaining everything, the brilliance behind writing just shined

  • I want to find the girl... She'd be, what, around 51 years old now? Nerdfighters, come on, we could find her if we tried.

  • @LifeMustard We could, but not without bothering her personally. And I don't think that that's fair on her.

  • I live around Los Angeles and the first 11 seconds are sooooooo true.

  • john, i wish i could do that thing you do where you think thoughts and say words and then somehow something beautiful comes out

  • your reflection on this day was really moving. I find I watch you guys for a chuckle here, or a general mood lift there -- every now and again you'll make a comment that really strikes a chord.

    "Found baby girl, 1961"

There are no words for the depth of the moment captured in that photograph.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • JANUARY 24th! Yes! Nothing ever happens on that day!

  • I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!!! Giant TV. THAT is my solution. Thank you, and goodnight

  • I like you, Hank. You think about a lot of things. And not just stupid things, but meaningful things. I could even say you think too much. And I'm glad that I spend my internet time listening to a successful guy who has a life, and who is SMART. I'm glad you're not just some loser who sits in his mother's basement all day.

    -Liz

  • @lizachuu Ummm... you know this is John's video, right??

  • @Quirellmort99 ...crap. I AM A NEW NERDFIGHTER, AND I MIX THEM UP SOMETIMES. *dies*

  • @lizachuu hahaha thats ok, I am a fairly new nerdfighter and I used get them mixed up too XD

  • @Quirellmort99 well, i think my statement is true for either brother. xD

  • @lizachuu Very true :]

  • @lizachuu True story: when I watched my first ever vlogbrothers video, I thought that John was the name Hank gave to his computer.

  • @SirTeeGeeEss LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

  • @lizachuu haha you'll get it eventually :) at first I always had to stop and think "He said "Good Morning, Hank" so this must be John."

  • @dolphin64575 Yeah, I have to do that .... xD

  • Ransom's photos... He might benefit from a scanner. No need for all the pictures, storing them and so on. Just scan and save. One of the newer terrabyte drives should do it for the rest of his life. Just a thought. Good video. thanks!

    Mike

  • MY HOUSE IS ON SAN VICENTE!

Why did I only discover them this month :(

  • OH! Yay! I can ask you. There's a literary term for something bad happening on a nice day, or something like that. I remember discussing it while reading Night in 9th grade. When the author was describing how there were fires, meant for burning people alive, on a day that was so beautiful... I'm at least pretty sure that there's actually a term for it. However, I cannot remember. Nerdfighters, help please?

  • @freezie656 i dont know what the term is but if there is one i would love to know it.

  • @freezie656 I suggest asking the ning, Your Pants, or both :P

  • I know that rock wall thats kindof beautiful

  • gosh do 8 adore anal sex

  • As always, well said. You have such a way with words.

  • You have a beautiful soul. You articulated so well that feeling of time's relentless march, of our own impotence and even indifference in the face of others' suffering, because life just won't stop. I have to hope that people can know that we think of them, or at least that that as those thoughts prompt us to act, we will provide the solace they need.

  • The captions say "San Basante" and not "San Vicente". Living in between these streets, I feel you should know this.

  • @mynameismechi fail

  • AH!!!!! HANK GREEN WAS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD! That duck pond is down the canal from my house OH MY GOD I am freaking out.

  • @mynameismechi john green*

  • this is the 2nd time i watch this and it still makes me cry.

  • So John drives Dodge Caliber?

  • Beautiful

  • I was a little upset listening to this and then right as it ended and I laughed. Why? I say Giraffe sex.

  • Chills.

  • john.. you cant talk on your phone in the car in california.

  • @vinhgo omg, lol. i was thinking the same thing. i kept waiting for him to be pulled over..

  • I seriously want to frame this, put it on my wall, and play it every single day.

  • 1:18 was in antm when tyra and jay told the girls they were going to italy!!!!!

  • " Images can travel as thoughts cannot." God, John. That's why you're a writer.

  • @Banananut999 "Then I ran into the water like a boss." Also why he is a writer.

  • Walt Whitman wrote about this in Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. Always a good topic.

  • You just gave me goosebumps. Beautiful, John.

  • 33 people aren't made of awesome.

  • I want to find Dorothy now...

  • This made me cry a little.

  • me too!

  • Thanks for another wonderful "thoughts from places!"

  • "CLOSE PROXIMITY" John made a grammatical error!

  • This is honestly one of my favorite videos. I also collect photographs, it all started after my granny died and I found some really old images of her when she was younger. It's nice to know that there are others with similar passions.

I really would like to know who the baby girl was.

  • i like how the "doblido" is like second nature now lol... "just check the doblido" lol...

  • Oh so good.

  • John's a really great writer and narrator going off that tangent.

  • John's a really greater writer and narrator going off that tangent.

  • LIKE A BOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LOL!!

  • Damnit I don't want to like your videos but i kind of do...

  • And then I ran into the water like a boss lol :)

  • "Wouldn't it be sad if a child's pool were enough to imprison you?" lol!

  • This video practically made me cry

  • I forgot I had started an Ice Cube music Viedo before I clicked this one...it was so fitting for the video...really strange with your voice on top of that...

  • Has anyone ever realized John looks exactly like Bernard from Megamind?

  • @CassidysWorld That's been pointed out on the effyeahnerdfighters Tumblr, lol. Disney totally watches the vlogbrothers.

  • My dad way in Japan that weekend, he was ok, but it still gave a tragic even and extra dose of terror which i did not need

  • you have such a beautiful way with words!

  • This is my favourite of all your videos, John. It was beautiful and warm and sentimental and lovely- just like your books... Each of which I have devoured cover to cover. I'm very much an amateur writer myself and hearing the way you talk and obviously love language as you do fills me with joy.

I've been watching your channel for what feels like forever, please never stop being lovely.

  • OMG you saw a Bird of Paradise. I'm really good at making the napkin fold for that flower.

  • Started looking at random photos in my local antique shop because of this video.

  • "wouldn't it be sad if a child's pool were enough to imprison you?" yes. it would be tragic.

  • mobile ATMOS? dr. who reference? happy dance

  • Astonishing... and awesome... as always

  • john, you are so poetic. you've made my day better. i strive to be like you someday.

  • I am humbled.

  • venice canals.... i've seen em a lot on the show called californication, so i was like 'hey! i've been there!... ahh no i havent' xD

  • ...and that's why you're a writer.

  • the end was pure poetry. it's no wonder that you're a writer!

  • I love that last line, "I felt sad and frustrated that technology can never quite bridge the oceans between us.". It's so true and so sad.

  • you just dont know how much i love this man!

  • *ahem* John... everyone knows that the new word is avuncular (like an uncle) rather than "like a boss".

    Just Kidding.

    ....no, seriously. Best word ever.

  • John, you are my hero :D

  • Oh my. You guys are really something. You could both definitely make a positive impact on the world if you haven't already. I really respect both of you. Keep doing what you're doing.

  • I taught English two years ago in Ishinomaki, Japan, one of the hardest hit cities. I just learned today that 2 of my very young students died. It was a horrible feeling, reading that email.

  • when i heard about the Tsunami and saw it on the news it inspired me (along with you and hank going to some places like haiti) so when i finish this year at my university i shall volunteer to be a charity worker over seas to help decrease world suck. Please keep making videos that inspire people and make them think.

  • Thank you again for making me think about man's exostential dilemma and push me to think of ways to slove it.

  • This video has me just about in tears. I felt really scared that day, watching the news and being on the Japan-side of the ocean. Luckily for me and everyone/thing I know, there were few ill effects for Yokohama that day. The only thing that kept me from completely turning into a wreck that day was the e-mails of concern and love coming from friends and family on my cellphone. Technology was the only bridge to any sort of happiness for many that day.

  • Your photographer friend reminds me of the character Amelie in the movie Amelie. I suggest you watch it if you haven't already.

  • "Images can travel in a way that thoughts cannot" and "technology can never quite bridge the oceans between us" -beautifully said and very memorable. I'm never going to forget that :]

  • Why do you put things so beautifully? I wanted to cry when you went on that tangent in the last third of this...

  • That was actually very a very beautiful and thoughtful video

  • @zachissmart How does one write a box?

  • John, you should write a box based on that photograph where the baby was found!

  • I HAVE THAT SAME CAR AS YOU!!! Or rather, my mom has that car...

  • You say that it is sad that the turtles are imprisoned by the child's pool, but at least that is a physical confinement. Most of us are confined by things that are not even there at all.

  • @tibees That was beautiful. I wish we could all think and speak as poetically as you and John, then maybe the comments on YouTube would actually be anticipated instead of just random outbursts of anger at one another for no reason other than boredom.

  • I've lived in LA for all my life and never heard of the Venice canals. I just made the trip, it was awesomely beautiful. Thanks for NY adventure today.

  • How can you forget you have shoes on? What a waste of shoes! :O

  • @computernerdsunited Well I am still wearing the shoes. They are not the kind of fancy shoes that get ruined by salt water or anything. They are, like, $9 shoes, thank goodness. -John

  • @vlogbrothers That's how all of my shoes are!(: Why spend 60 bucks on vans when you can get the same pair for 5 at forever XXI?

  • John you give me an idea to help the Japan people by having a lemonade stand! Of course I will give the crite to you.

  • I love that even while asking for directions, John manages to sound highly intelligent. I usually sound like a bumbling fool.

  • hmmm solipsism.. very sexy, indeed.

  • John that was great. You must be a writer or something...hehe

  • I'm actually crying

    What is wrong with me?

    <3

  • John, every single one of your thoughts from places makes me feel so... so.

  • ...Doesn't the internet sort of accomplish that bridge between the oceans thing?

  • If you were able to say all that while driving LOL

  • You were one hour away from me gahhh!!

  • Hahaha...Wilshire and San Vicente are both parallel and perpendicular, depending. :) Think that's confusing? Did you get the chance to follow signs for the 101 freeway North only to discover the on-ramp labelled 101 West, or follow signs for 101 East only to find yourself merging onto the 101 South? I think they do these things just to give us one more reason to feel smug and in-the-know. I <3 my city.

Btw, you were in L.A. and I didn't know? How? What am I doing wrong? Help!

  • Thoughts from places is my favorite thing about John and Hank

  • John, I wished I could have seen you in LA!

    See you at LeakyCon!

    PS: Traffic SUCKS!

  • John Green, you are a bamf with words.

  • LOVE thoughts from places. great upload! i enjoy your insight, as always.

  • I did some digging at the Pasadena Library and found some info on the baby and even a picture. The newspapers dubbed the baby "Little Miss Rose Bowl." Dorothy and her husband, Don, filed to make their home a foster home just two weeks after they found the baby. Later that year they moved to La Habra, CA though my trail went cold here. I went to the ning to see what other nerdfighters found and wondered if "Little Miss Rose Bowl" knows she was adopted. The rest of the story is up on the Ning.

  • ...you astound me.

  • I could never, ever, ever, ever drive in Los Angelas.

  • john, did you do all the math for "an abundance of kathrines?"

  • @annababy911 No, his mathemician friend did. I don't remember the name but I'm pretty sure they explain it all in the back of the book

  • @tenatopps Hs name was Daniel Biss.

  • @annababy911 No, I did none of the math in "An Abundance of Katherines." Well, I did the *thinking* behind the math but not the actual math. The math was done by brotherhood 2.0 resident mathematician Daniel Biss. -John

  • @vlogbrothers wait. wait, this is important. is the same Daniel Biss that represents me in the Illinois House of Representatives? (17th district.) because that would actually make my week. (and make me believe in Illinois politics again!)

  • @franklymydearx Yes, it is!

  • Your words speak to me.

  • Maybe the earth is our child's pool.

  • @TheLizGang Yeah, except we're able to leave Earth. Ever heard of NASA?

  • @BoxioBrowz HAHA true, though that isn't quite so simple for the majority of our population xD
