isnt the automatic gearbox like, P R N D 3 and 2 like on the newer mercedes? i hears you said low gear.. anyway ive got a -83 240D euro best car ever! check it out on my channel!
Check the shift modulator. My mom's car ('85 380SE (gas)) had that issue of not shifting. It was also slipping when starting off uphill, but that was because the ATF was low. Anyhow, the modulator had gone bad so it had to be manually shifted.
I have the same car, with the exact spot on the windshield cracked haha
